Trinity Lutheran Church Council met April 14, 2014. President Kendall Christensen called the meeting to order. Pastor White led the recharge.

Pastor White reported on the progress of the Constitution and By-laws Working Group. There will be two “Town Hall” meetings scheduled for April 24 and April 27 in the Fellowship Hall to seek Congregational input.

Pastor White has organized a team consisting of Mike Zastera, Eric Bell, Cindy White, Anne Weber and Kendall Christensen for the Chancel Remodel team. They have met and are discussing various possibilities of how the Chancel could be remodeled to accommodate traditional and modern worship services and other special events. Pastor Nestor talked about the possibility of replacing the current speakers in the Chancel with line array speakers. He also handed out information on personal mixers and

monitors that would eliminate floor speakers.

Randy Schaefer presented a preliminary cost estimate for broadloom carpet versus carpet squares for the Fellowship Hall, Fireside Room and hallways. A large carpet purchase would lower the cost estimate. Kathy Barcel, along with Donna Dubsky and Jolene Gragert, will look at carpet color and selection and report back at the next Council meeting.

Kendall Christensen reported on property concerns and priorities. The concrete up to the front entrance of the church is in disrepair; some entrance doors need replacing and the parsonage is in need of some repairs.

The LCMC Annual Gathering Project this year is to pack 400,000 meals for the “Meals for the Heartland.” Pastor White suggested that Trinity give $500 to the LCMC for this project and will ask Trinity

members for a freewill offering to help with this project at an upcoming Worship weekend with a date to be determined.

Pastor Zurek’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination will be celebrated the weekend of June 15 with a card shower and reception after the 10:30 service.

Jenny French, Glenda Lundstrom and Billy & Denise Czapla have met with Pastor White with concerns about summer participation of the Going Deep and Wired 12:2 students. It was decided to give a schedule break from June through August 12 for these groups but ask students to give some of their time in other areas. A special launch would take place after August 12 to get students geared up for another year of participation.

The meeting closed with prayer. The next Council meeting will be May 12, 2014, at 7 p.m.

TWISTING THE TRUTH In Adult Forum

It seems so innocent, so minor, just a little white lie, a little twisting of the truth and suddenly the truth becomes untruth. See how twisting the truth can ruin your life, your relationship with others and your relationship with God.

CHANCEL REMODELING DESIGN TEAM BEGINS WORK by Pastor White

Talking about redesigning the Chancel of Trinity’s Worship Center is not exactly something new. Twice before design groups were formed with the idea of giving the front area of our worship space a cleaner, updated appearance and to make it more versatile. In both instances, either the plans became too big and complex or other projects were deemed more important at the time and the idea was subsequently dropped. At its February 2014 meeting the Trinity Council authorized, once again, the formation of a group to develop a new Chancel design and to oversee the work of remodeling.

The Chancel Remodeling Design Team met for the first time on April 8. Team members are Pastor White, Kendall Christensen, Eric Bell, Anne Weber, Cindy White and Mike Zastera. The group determined goals for the project—that the design be flexible and multifunctional with consideration of both traditional and modern worship forms, worship dramas, special events and movement related to Holy Communion. Another goal is that Worship Leaders would be physically closer to the people in attendance and that the design have a

cleaner and more modern appearance overall. Line of sight, storage, video projection, sound and lighting issues should also be addressed. Taking all this into account, the Team nevertheless hopes to keep the design relatively simple this time around. The Design Team then moved into the Worship Center to view our Chancel area and to visualize various remodeling schemes.

The impetus for doing a redesign is multi-faceted. There is the desire to “clean up” the jumbled appearance in the front of our worship space that came when all the risers and music equipment were added almost two decades ago. Also, modern worship is more relational; so there’s a desire to move worship

leaders, and particularly the altar area, closer to the people. Weekend Worship Services are the one opportunity churches have every week to reach the most people. This is certainly true here at Trinity. Having worship space that’s attractive and that is designed for what we are doing can help tremendously in connecting the hearts of people with that of their Savior.

EASTER GARDEN VOLUNTEERS!! The Chancel Garden for EASTER SUNDAY was BEAUTIFUL!! A lot of people commented on how special it

made worship. THANKS to all of you!! Also, a special thanks to those who delivered Easter plants to shut ins. God’s Blessings.

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT NOAH IS NEVER SEEN IN “Noah” by Pastor White

If you’ve seen Hollywood’s latest depiction of a biblical character, Noah, then you already know that the story on the screen shares little in common with the story you learned decades ago in Sunday School. There is a Noah, an ark, a flood and some other names from the Bible. These are apparently about all the similarities with the biblical text the producers of Noah felt they could allow.

Is the film really “true to the essence, values and integrity” of the biblical account of Noah as the advertising disclaimer asserts? Don’t let this statement fool you. Noah himself commits murder to save the life of a wounded dog-lizard beast. The Creator (the name “God” is never mentioned in the movie) doesn’t speak to Noah but gives him visions and dreams, and Noah must solve the puzzle to determine what the Creator wants him to do—build an ark to save his family from a coming flood. But the whole premise for the flood is changed from the one in the Bible. Genesis 6 tells us that God “saw how great man’s wickedness had become” and “every inclination … of his heart was only evil all the time,” while God considered Noah “righteous in this generation” (Gen. 7:1). In Noah, the earth and the animals are innocent, and the flood is intended to exterminate humanity because they have destroyed the earth—this violation of the environment includes killing animals for

food. Noah and his family are all shown to be vegetarians. But then, Noah becomes increasingly conflicted as the movie progresses and borderline psychopathic, thinking he must kill off his own family and himself so the earth can recover without any human population. The environmental extremist worldview is woven throughout the film.

To its credit (I suppose) the film, Noah, begins with a depiction of the creation. The creation sequence however begins with “The Big Bang” followed by a sequence depicting lower-life forms evolving into ever higher ones, culminating in the formation of Adam and Eve. What atheist Director/Writer Darren Aronofsky doesn’t realize is that his pro-evolution approach turns his own “Creator” god into a cosmic hypocrite. He wants Noah to save all the innocent animals so they can repopulate the earth without wicked humanity, yet this same “Creator” allowed billions of animals to suffer and die in the process of natural selection (presumably) so they could evolve into the very humans who took over the planet. This article is meant to inform. Christians have a choice: We can whine about Noah, or we can use the release of this film as a catalyst for faith discussions with our non-believing friends. So maybe it turns out God can use this. Approach this movie with much prayer!

A huge blessing in belonging to our Trinity family is coming together to worship and give glory to the Lord. As the Director of Music at Trinity and as a Worship leader, there is no more profound privilege than leading God’s people in praise and worship to the glory of God.

Singing is a mark of obedience. God not only creates His people but commands His people to sing. In Zephaniah 3:14 he says, “Sing aloud ... and exult with all your heart.” What matters most in singing is the state of our hearts. God is honored when our hearts sing unto Him in joyful humility and honesty.

Singing glorifies God. If we want to be a singing church that truly glorifies God, our focus is vertical, praising His wonderful works and who He is.

Singing teaches and encourages. Our hymns and worship songs often have lyrics taken straight from the Bible, such as, “How Firm a Foundation,” which tells us “to fear not and be not dismayed.” We learn the character and comfort of our Lord through the songs we sing. And as we sing together we encourage one another in faith.

Singing humbles. What will unite us together in life and worship is not the style of music we prefer but the revealing of God’s majesty in Christ. So whatever kind of voice the Lord has given you, lift it up in praise to Him here at Trinity and wherever the Lord takes you in this life.

There was no shortage of good food or fellowship as the families, leaders and student leaders gathered in the Fellowship Hall. We celebrated the milestone of our 6th Graders graduating from Breakout! It’s always a little sad for me to let go of these great kids as they move out of Children’s Ministry into Junior High. I especially look forward to serving in mission with them in June.
