It remains the US service pistol for 74 years. • The record was set for the highest number of immigrants — 11,745 — being processed in a single day through the U.S. Bureau of Immigration station at Ellis Is- land on April 17. • The United States Supreme Court declares Standard Oil to be an “unrea- sonable” monopoly under the Sherman Antitrust Act on May 15 and orders the company to be dissolved. • The very first Indianapolis 500 is held May 30, won by Ray Harroun at an aver- age speed of 74.59 miles per hour.
