1 We use Not only + inversion to emphasise two unusual or special actions that are normally linked by an addition clause.

Not only did I bruise my arm in the skiing accident, but I also got a black eye.

2 We DON’T usually use this form of inversion to link two contrasting actions.

Not only did I black out while bungee jumping, but I also had the time of my life.

3 This form of inversion is NOT used to link unexceptional, normal activities.

Not only did I iron my blouse, but I also put it on.

4 When the rst action is in the present or past simple, the auxiliary do or did is needed to form the inversion.

Not only does my big brother play rugby, but he is also an amateur boxer.

5 If there are three or more actions, only one is inverted.

Not only are we losing, but our best kicker has been disquali ed and our goalkeeper sent o .

6 Responses with So are for agreement with a positive statement.

‘I think people who do extreme sports are crazy.’ ‘So do I.’

7 Responses with Neither and Nor are for agreement with a negative statement.

‘I love playing bossaball.’ ‘Neither do I.’

8 If the responder doesn’t agree with a positive or negative statement, they use either a positive or negative auxiliary verb.

‘We really like jogging.’ ‘I don’t.’

Inversion, So do I / Neither do I

Do you have any couch-potatoes in your life? You know … those people who sit staring at the TV for 1 long that they appear to have become part of the furniture? 2 be honest, I can’t think of any excuse good 3 to stop someone from 4 at least some kind of sport. Not 5 do I think that couch-potatoes are lazy, but I 6 think that they are probably rather unhealthy. I don’t think it’s ever 7 late for someone to take 8 a new sport. Extreme!

Adrenaline junkies, 1 , or whatever you want to call them, are people who love extreme sports. Not only do they 2 crazy sports like snowkiting, 3 they also go to the strangest places to 4 in these activities. Recently, Tom Hanes from Nebraska, USA, travelled all the way from his own country to Alberta, Canada, to do the sport he loves 5 much. A(n) 6 snowkiting instructor, Tom gets very frustrated when friends and family tell him he is 7 when it comes to his sport. ‘Hey, life is 8 short to sit around watching the world go by. What I do is perfectly 9 , so let me do what I want to do!’ ‘Have you ever hurt yourself?’ we asked him. ‘Well, actually no, but I have had a few 10 students who have. Not only 11 one of them twist his ankle, but he also got some huge 12 and a black eye.’

4 Read the blog and think of the word which best ts each space. Use only one word in each space.

Hi all! Today’s topic... extreme sports! To be honest, I’ve never tried an extreme sport. I think people that 1 them, the adrenaline junkies, are a bit crazy. I’m seventeen, so I’m old enough to 2 snowkiting or bungee jumping if I want to but I just think risking my life is a little immature. Life is 3 short to waste on getting involved with dangerous games and activities. In my opinion, the more traditional sports are probably much better for you. When you do martial arts, for example, not 4 do you get a fantastic workout, but you 5 get rid of all your stress. And you don’t break an arm, leg or your neck doing it! All right, all right! If judo or karate doesn’t sound exciting 6 for you, why not take 7 something like athletics? Or why not 8 cricket or rugby in a team? There are so many sports out there to choose from. What are your favourites? Comments, please.

Dear Diary, What a day! It was 1 exciting that I don’t know where to begin! As I told you last week, after I had decided to 2 up some kind of sport, I nally chose to 3 ice-hockey. I did that because not only 4 it get me t, but I would also be participating in a team. Well, today was our rst big match! When I got to the rink, the coach thought we didn’t have 5 players because there were only twenty people, which is too few to make up a team. Thankfully, two more people showed up. Then the match began! It was 6 cool experience. When you’re skating, there are times when you have to 7 up and then, suddenly, you have to slow down or risk hitting another player. But in the end, we won! And that means we got 8 to the next round. Hey, who knows, if we keep going like we are now, we might even make it to the championships!
