    &uly 11) %ill *e provided *y mem*ers of the ASGARD 1(( group led *y 3at 2urphy#

    At 1'#18pm, the 3resident, 2ichael D $iggins %ill arrive and %ill inspect a guard-of-honour

    provided *y the Army and 6aval Services# Also participating %ill *e 2s $eather $umphreys

    TD, 2inister for Arts, $eritage and the Gaeltacht and the Defence 9orces# At 1'#)(pm the

    3resident %ill give a short speech and %ill then proceed %ith %reath-laying and ceremonial

    activities at the ommemorative 3la+ue#

    At 1'#4(pm, an Asgard replica : ;Asgard 4ust opposite the sheds and a re-

    enactment of the landing of the arms, arranged *y the ASGARD 1(( ommunity Group, %ill

    commence o*served *y the 3resident# ?ocal volunteers from the eann "adair GAA lu*

    and marching volunteers from Du*lin %ill unload the ;arms< and leave the 3ier %ith the

    ;consignmentust last %ee/

    to the 6ational 2useum of Ireland# :See Article 3age )=

    A huge screen %ill *e erected at the end of the "ast 3ier and there %ill *e a live feed on the

    screeen of the flotilla and the entire ceremony, along %ith a conte7tual historical

    presentation#

    The community and pu*lic element of the commemoration %ill continue after '#((pm %ith a

    cultural programme featuring rian egley, eoltBirC hluain Tar*h and St, rigids 3ipe

    and from $o%th#

    The %hole event is free and open to the pu*lic and all are encouraged to attend in period

    costume# 3ries %ill *e presented to the *est period dressed individual male or female,

    family and *oat cre%# The programme %ill conclude at )pm#

    .e understand up%ards of '(( invitations have *een issued and prominent attendees %ill

    include si7teen mem*ers of the hilders family, relations of 2ary Spring Rice and of Gola

    Islands 3at 2cGinley, of ulmer $o*son and of The 5Rahilly %ho provided a car on the

    occasion# Also in attendance %ill *e the Army hief-of-Staff onor 5oyle and the 6avys

    Rear Admiral 2ar/ 2ellett# An interesting aside to the event is the participation of the ne%ly

    appointed 2inister for Defence, $eather $umphreys, %ho herself comes from a 2onaghan

    gunrunning for Repu*licans#

    So, if you %ant to go alongE All the activities %ill ta/e place on the "ast 3ier *eyond the

    "l*o%# The top level of the pier %ill *e closed off to the pu*lic from that point, so mem*ers

    of the pu*lic attending can only do so on the lo%er level# 5ur advice is to go early, say

    *efore 11am# A very large attendance is e7pected and for safety reasons, the *arriers %ill *e

    closed %hen it is considered necessary# .e estimate appro7imately the first 1,((( to arrive

    %ill *e admitted#

    ERSINE CHILDERS AND THE HOWTH GUNRUNNING

    After one hundred years %e can say there are very fe% in $o%th %ho remem*er "rs/ine

    hilders and the Asgard#

    To give you a *ac/ground to the story, %e are attaching

    to this ulletin an article %ritten *ac/ in '((1 *y Des

    Gilroy as part of the $o%th Sutton ommunity ouncils

    campaign to have the Asgard returned for permanent

    e7hi*ition in $o%th#

    It %as hoped *y the ommunity ouncil that the Asgard

    could *e the centrepiece of a ne% 2aratime 2useum to

    *e *uilt on $o%ths .est 3ier#

    This am*ition never came to fruition#

    Childers towards the end of his life.

    THE SAGA O THE ASGARD

    Since August, '(1' the restored Asgard is on permanent display in ollns arrac/s,, Du*lin #

    .or/ on the pro>ect *egan in '((0# The focus of the restoration %as on preserving as much as

    possi*le of the original %ooden hull and its metal supports, *efore replacing pieces %ith ne%

    material# In a pro>ect led *y master ship%right &ohn Fearon, over 0( of the original dec/

    and hull %ere preserved# The yacht and related artifacts are no% on permanent display in an

    e7hi*ition titled AsgardH The 11) $o%th Gun Running Vessel onserved#

    6essa hilders 2"3 and her *rother 3rof# Rory hilders %ere the guests of honour at the

    official opening *y Arts 2inister &immy Deenihan in August '(1'#

    $o%ever, *efore *eing restored, the Asgard %as the su*>ect of a highly controversial and at

    times tur*ulent dispute *et%een those %ho favoured restoring the vessel to sea-going

    condition and those %ho *elieved the proper approach %ould *e to conserve the original

    vessel#

    Among those %ho %or/ed strenuously over the years to ensure the Asgard %as not

    a*andoned to the scrapyard %ere a num*er of local 3eninsula personnel# These included the

    late ?eslie 5?aoi from $o%th, 3addy 5$ara from Sutton and .il/ie Di7on and aptain

    from her parents in oston# @nder the direction of &ohn Fearon, traditional *oat conservator,

    the ASGARD has *een meticulously conserved and restored to its original splendour, and is

    on pu*lic vie% at the 6ational 2useum of Ireland Decorative Arts J $istory, ollins

    arrac/s#

    After the official opening of the e7hi*it in August '(1', a local committee from the $o%th

    area came together and undertoo/ a num*er of pro>ects to commemorate and perpetuate the

    heroic endeavour# As a prelude, over the %inter of '(11K1' si7 local volunteers *uilt,

    assem*led and partly funded the rigging and spars for the conserved ASGARD # They have

    no% follo%ed up, in this the centennial year, *y underta/ing the construction of an e7act

    replica of the ASGARDs dinghy#

    &ohn Fearon, %hile researching in 6or%ay, discovered the plans of *oth ASGARD and her

    dinghy# &ohn and his colleague 5llie .ard *egan *uilding the dinghy *ut unfortunately due to

    financial constraints %ith the 6ational 2useum the pro>ect %as halted shortly after%ards# The

    si7 local volunteers again rose to the challenge and undertoo/ the mammoth tas/ of

    recreating in identical detail the original dinghy# The committee, consisting of - .ally

    2cGuir/, 3at 2urphy, 2i/e Ale7ander, 6eville 2aguire, Rory 2cGuir/ and 3addy arry set

    a*out raising the necessary funds#

    Recovering the s/eleton frame from &ohn Fearon, the group engaged 9ingal master *oat

    *uilder ?arry Archer to complete the %ood%or/# The dinghy %as then transferred to 3at

    2urphys %or/shop %here 3at and George "lliott undertoo/ the tas/ of filing do%n and

    cleaning 1,8(( rivets *y hand *efore then applying the finishing touches *y applying eight

    coats of varnish# Thus, over the course of a year, this splendid and iconic dinghy has *eentransformed from paper plans to the e7ample of super* design and craftsmanship that is

    evidenced today# @rged on *y 3at 2urphy, the community, individuals, clu*s, organisations

    and *usinesses of $o%th and the surrounding areas contri*uted to raising the necessary

    funds# Indeed, so generous %as the response to the fundraising that the committee %ere in a

    position to contri*ute a surplus L8(( to the $o%th ?ife*oat#

    The final part of the plan %as to present the dinghy to the 6ational 2useum and at a

    reception in $o%th Macht lu* on .ednesday last, &uly 1!th, the very happy Asgard

    Volunteer Group passed the *eautifully presented *oat to Raghnall 5 9loinn of the 2useum#

    The 2useum %ill position the dinghy in its rightful place ad>acent to the ASGARD in a

    lasting tri*ute to a remar/a*le feat# The recreated dinghy %ill *e availa*le for the pu*lic to

    see from the 'th&uly '(1) at the 6ational 2useum of Ireland Decorative Arts J $istory,

    ollins arrac/s#

    The Director of the 6ational 2useum of Ireland, Raghnall B 9loinn, in paying tri*ute to thecommitment of all those involved in the dinghy recreation pro>ect, stated N the National Museum of

    Ireland is delighted to accept the donation of the replica of ASGARDs dinghy and wishes

    to than all those in !owth and the surrounding areas for their wor in seeing the pro"ect

    through to completion# and in particular the Asgard $olunteer Group. %his is truly a

    community effort com&ining solid research# local fund'raising# traditional &oat'&uilding

    sills and the enthusiasm of a dedicated team of (olunteers. It will &e a significant addition

    to the Museums e)hi&ition.

    Also in attendance for the press launch %as ne% appointed 2inister, $eather $umphries,

    %ho said# H *I am (ery grateful to the (olunteers of !owth for their generosity in gi(ing

    their time and e)pertise to assist us to commemorate this important e(ent in our history.

    %here is no dou&t that the landing of arms in !owth was a significant milestone along the

    road to +aster ,-, and I am delighted to support arrangements to mar this centenary in

    an appropriate way

    SINN EIN COMMEMORATION

    Sinn 9ein %ill hold its o%n commemoration on Saturday, '!th, commencing at the $ar*our Road end

    of the "ast 3ier and then follo%ing a lone piper to the ommemorative 3la+ue %here they %ill have a

    %reath laying ceremony and a speech *y Sinn 9ein, londal/in councillor "oin 5roin#

    Additionally, the Irish Volunteer ommemorative Society %ill hold an e7hi*ition of memora*ilia in

    the $o%th Sea Angling entre on Saturday, '!th and Sunday '0th, running from 11am )pm#

    S3ECIAL HOWTH TRAM DIS3LAY ON SUNDAY

    As you may /no%, the Du*lin 2etropolitan 3olice, on hearing a*out the landing of the

    Asgard %ith the guns, set off on the $o%th tram from the city to intercept the gunrunners#

    .hen they sa% a force of 1((( men %ith arms marching to%ards them, they ordered the

    drivers to drive *ac/ to the city to get reinforcements to the sound of *ooing from the

    onloo/ers# This %as referred to the Ogreat tram chaseO# 9or this reason the 6ational Transport

    2useum have *een as/ed to *ring a tram do%n to the har*our %ith an e7hi*ition on the$o%th gun running on *oard the tram#

    9eargal raven, %ho helped to restore the tram in +uestion, is the grandson of one of the gun

    runners, &eremiah $ennessey, %ho %as diso%ned *y his shoc/ed father %ho O%ore the

    clothes of a ritish coast guard officerO The %hole story %ill *e on the tram and %ill *e part

    of the display to commemorate the occasion# It is the local museums contri*ution to this

    historic event#

    We took a 2 hour tour of nearby Lambay island, which has some interesting local history

    and is home to thousands of cormorants, gannets, puffins, gulls, and terns. We saw the

    smaller Skerries islands as well. Eoin, the tour operator, was courteous and made sure we

    were well taken care of out on the boat. He was also ery knowledgeable about the scenery,

    wildlife, and local history of the islands. !his is a great, aluable trip if you"re staying in the

    town of Skerries, as we were. #ut it"s also worth traelling to Skerries for. $ome for the sea

    tour, stay for the ice cream shop on the pier and the delicious local restaurants.%

    BEANN EADAIR SUMMER CAM3

    5f all the Summer amps availa*le to our youngsters, %e have al%ays regarded the GAA ul amps,

    sponsored currently *y Felloggs, as *eing one of the *est organised and offering the very *est value#

    In $o%th, due to the enormous %or/ put in for over a decade *y 3eadar 2acanna and his team of

    volunteers there, the eann "adair lu* has *ecome a mecca for *oth young *oys and girls and is the

    preferred destination for over one hundred children plus parents every Saturday morning#

    achievement and a recognition of the great %or/ they do there# A second camp %ill *e held August 1

    SUTTON CROSS DEVELO3MENTSThan/s to the great %or/ carried out around Sutton ross *y local volunteers, particularly the Tidy

    To%ns ommittee, and 9ingal o ouncil, the appearance of the ross area has vastly improved over

    the past num*er of years# The floral *eds have *een generally %ell maintained and contri*ute great

    colour to the overall scene#

    6o% %e note t%o developments, one adding to the overall am*ience and the other having a negative

    effect#

    Sutton Cross Goes Continental

    .ith the opening of Insomnia and Il Valentino at $iggins utchers and the placement of

    outdoor ta*les, the ross has ta/en on a continental loo/# .e no% have a ne% scene %here*y

    coffee drin/ers can sit in the sun, %atch the *uses go *y and o*serve the goings and comings

    into the ad>oining an/ of Ireland# .e note that the *a/ery and cafe *usiness in $iggins

    The company is o%ned and managed *y 5%en and Valentina Doorly and at their southside

    cafe they have *uilt up a significant reputation for authentic Italian patisserie, desserts and

    coffee# Indeed, food critic 2arie-laire Dig*y got +uite e7cited *y them last 5cto*er %hen

    she %rote in the Irish Times 2againe /throughout the winter# the &aers at il $alentino

    will &e selecting ingredients to create special recipes around a &umper apple har(est. 0oull

    find strudls# crum&les# pithi(iers and tarts on sale# &ut the show stopper they are planning

    is a cro1uem&ouche chou) pastry towre decorated with pommes damour# or toffee

    apples2. If they do that in Sutton, %e >ust cant %ait for the %inter#

    A small set*ac/ the company applied in 2ay for planning permission , the development

    *eing ;the placing of ta*le and chairs outside and inside and the sale of hot drin/s for

    consumption off the premises< $o%ever, 9ingal planners declared the application invalid

    *ecause of the omission of copies of the ne%spaper notice and site notice# Additionally they

    failed to supply si7 copies of all plans and dra%ings# As %e go to print, %e are told a fresh

    application %ill *e made in the ne7t fe% days#

    $o%ever, on the negative side, %e have noted that S*!V'+has engaged in a campaign to

    erect large advertising placards on lampposts around the ross# These are grossly unsightly

    and %hen ta/en %ith the other signs no% erected *y the various shops on the pillars

    supporting the old Super+uinn offices, they have introduced a very negative element into the

    areas %hich %ill not help Sutton in the Tidy To%ns#

    ould someone have a +uiet %ord %ith SuperValu management, tell them it is not only

    unsightly *ut pro*a*ly illegal and as/ them to stop this practice#

    DUBLIN BAY CRUISES#

    Du*lin ay ruises are no% operating a service *et%een $o%th and Dun ?aoghaire via the

    %ourist 3ffice on !ar&our Road# !owth

    In our last issue on 2ay '(, '(1), %e reported that the ne% tim*er structured Tourist 5ffice

    had *een put in place# .e added that it had *een due to open the previous %ee/end *ut had

    hit a snag# It turned out that the ;snag< encountered %as lac/ of electricity and that the

    ouncil %as %aiting for the "S to connect po%er to the unit# This caused immensesurprise, particularly since the foundations for the office had *een laid in mid-'(14 and then

    a lenghty period had elapsed %hile a lease %as *eing negotiated *et%een 9 and the

    Department of the 2arine# $ad no one applied to the "S for a connection until the last

    minute or %as the "S so inefficient as to ta/e months to offer a connection#

    "ventually the connection %as made and the office opened at the *eginning of &uly# .hen it

    opened, it %as totally unsigned and %e %ondered %hy# The %ord %as that the ouncil %ished

    to erect t%o flagpoles signaling the location of the service *ut once again had encountered

    o*>ections and o*structions from the har*our authorities# This %ee/ %e note that mo*ile

    flagpoles have *een installed %hich can *e ta/en in each night#

    .hy is progress so slo% and painful on everything that happens in the vicinity of the

    har*our

    HOWTHS BUILDING EYESORES

    %he old 4aily Court !otel ' +yesore

    Derelict sites and *uildings have *een a *light on the *eauty of $o%th over the past five

    years and %hile some improvements have *een made, there is still a lot of %or/ to *e done#

    5n the $ar*our Road area, the replacement of the old filling station site *eside 9indlaters

    %ith the ne% fascade of the $o%th 2ar/et is a huge improvement# Additionally, the openingof the garden centre on the old Teelings 9illing Station site has covered up another derelict

    site# .as planning permission re+uired for this change of use If so, %e did not notice it

    going through#

    $o%ever, $o%th Village is currently *lighted *y t%o sites %hich urgently need attention# The

    most important of these is in the Village centre, the old aily ourt $otel# 3lanning

    permission has *een received for the demolition of this *uilding and its replacement %ith a

    mi7 of retail and residential# At present it is a terri*le eyesore and is li/ely to remain so until

    demolition and re*uilding ta/es place, pro*a*ly not *efore early to mid-'(18#

    The other derelict *uilding %hich is also li/ely to *e %ith us for a long time is the old

    ?ighthouse pu* replacement# Readers %ill recall that, %hile in construction, the replacement

    *uilding strayed seriously from the permission granted and the less-than-pleased planners in

    9ingal o ouncil called a halt to the development# .e note from our 3eninsula 3lanning

    6e%s of 9e*ruary 1, '((0, that the developers applied for retention of the non-approvedelements of the development# This %as refused and demolition ordered# At this stage, seven

    years later, %e understand that the developers are a%aiting their day in court as they are

    sueing the deceased architect for negligence# "ffectively this case is against the architects

    insurance company and %ith the lengthy delays currently *eing e7perienced in the civil

    courts this saga may have many years to run# In the mean%hile, %e *elieve 9ingal o ouncil

    has reached an agreement %ith the developers to replace and ma/e safe the e7isting fencing

    alongside hurch Street and to *o7 off some of the most unsightly elements of this %retched

    *uilding#

    ANOTHER BLOW TO TOURIST INTERESTS AS THE

    DE3ARTMENT S3OILS THE UN

    As %e reported in our last issue, the $o%th "7press Train is a very %elcome and colourful

    addition to the touristic attractions in $o%th# 6o%, as has happened to many tourist and

    community initiatives in $o%th, the har*our authorities have stepped in to spoil the fun#

    5riginally, travellers on the fun train en>oyed a trip %hich ran from the 5ld ourthouse "ast 3ier $ar*our Road Transport 2useum .est 3ier at ?ife*oat Station 5ld

    ourthouse#

    6o% the har*our authorities have *anned it from the har*our, citing potential to cause

    o*struction and traffic disruption#

    .e %ill *e more careful in future %hen chec/ing Tripadvisor ratings for restaurants in cities,

    to%ns and villages %e may visit# .e have so many great restaurants in $o%th that in our

    vie% it is impossi*le to separate the top eight# If as/ed to compile a listing of the top ten, in

    no particular order, %e %ould include eight of the 1-1( a*ove and promote *oth the Fing

    Sitric and ra**y &oes into our listing# .e %ill leave it to readers to ma/e their o%n choice

    and to guess %hat t%o %e %ould relegate out of the top ten# The *rilliant ne%s, though, is that

    there is not a poor restaurant among the %hole t%enty-one and %e are really %ell served for

    good dining in $o%th#

    INGAL COUNCIL CUTS 3RO3ERTY TA5

    In the legislation introducing the 3roperty Ta7, provision %as made giving county council the

    latitude to increase or reduce property ta7 for that area *y a ma7imum of 18# As it %as

    generally held that Du*lin property o%ners %ere unfairly ta7ed *ecause of higher property

    prices in the area, 9ingal councillors voted at their &uly meeting to cut the ta7 for '(18 *y this

    ma7imum percentage# This decision is su*>ect to a consultation process and formal

    ratification in Septem*er#

    St 9intans 3arish, Sutton, is to proceed %ith plans to partially demolish the e7isting 3arish

    entre and replace it %ith a su*stantially larger *uilding# This is seen as *eing necessary as

    the Sutton site is to *e the $u* in a future configured amalgamation %ith $o%th, aldoyle

    and ayside parishes#

    Sutton parishioners %ere recently invited to a ; consultation meeting< to discuss the pro>ect*ut many parishioners %ere annoyed to find that a decision to proceed had already *een made

    and that approval had already *een received from the Archdiocese# The meeting %as told that

    in future all scarce resources personnel, finance, etc in the five e7isting parishes %ould *e

    targetted to Sutton# Sutton, it %as stated, %as the choice location *ecause of centrality,

    *uilding e7pansion space and plentiful par/ing# It %as planned to lodge an application for

    planning permission %ith 9ingal o ounci yesterday, &uly '4rd# The meeting %as told that

    the pro>ected cost of the ne% *uilding %as L1#1m *ut many present e7pressed the vie% that

    this %as seriously underestimated#

    6o consultation has ta/en place to date on these plans %ith parishioners, or pastoral councils,in $o%th, aldoyle or ayside, and %e %ould forecast that they %ill not *e %ell received

    HOWTH SUMMER 3ROJECT GREAT SUCCESS

    5ne of the great community pro>ects in $o%th during the year is the annual Summer 3ro>ect#?ua lar/e, %ith the help of numerous volunteers, has *een running this pro>ect for children

    *et%een the ages of ) 18 for close on thirty years no% and even in this very sophisticated,

    electronic, tv dominated age, its popularity has never dimmed# 5ne of the highlights this year
