BackgroundTouchscreenshavetakenovertheworldinthepastfiveyearswithgrowingnumberofsmartphonesandtabletcomputersoperatedwithmulti-touchuserinterfaces.Thisgrowinguseradoptionoftouchandmulti-touchmodalitieshasincreasedfamiliarityofandexpectationsfortouchtobetheprimaryinterfacemethodbetweenmanandmachinesinanysituation.Asaresult,largerformatdisplaysareincreasinglyexpectedtosupporttouchwhendeployedinpublicspaces,digitalsignage,education,retail,museumandcorporateenvironments.

MultiTaction CellsMultiTouchintroducedthefirstgenerationMultiTouchCellinteractivedisplaysin2008.ItwasfollowedbyaslimmerandalightersecondgenerationAdvancedproductlinein2010.In2011,MultiTouchintroducedacompletelynewwaytobuildinteractivedisplayswithitsMultiTactiontechnology.

ThefirstproductbasedonMultiTactiontechnology,a55”MultiTactionCellwasintroducedinOctober2011.WithMultiTouchproprietaryComputerVisionThroughScreentechnologyintegratedintothedisplays,itwaspossibletorecognizeuserintentionsmuchmoreaccuratelythanwithothertouchtechnologies.Advancedgesturerecognitionbasedonidentifyingfingertips,fingerorientationandcompletehandsallowedfornaturalandintuitiveuserinterfacestobebuilt.

Moreover,theopticaltrackingwhichworksperpendicularlythroughtheLCDpanelallowedsupportforadvancedinteractionmethods.Thesystemwasabletoseewhatusersweredoingindetail.Theseadvancedinteractionmethodsincluded:

•Objecttracking.Physicalobjectscouldbetaggedwithoptical2Dmarkers.Therecouldbemillionsofdifferentmarkercodesdependingonthemarkersize.UserscouldplaceobjectssuchasIDcards,couponsorproductsamplesonthedisplayandmoveandrotatethem.Applicationdeveloperscouldmakeuseofthiswhendesigningapplications.•Pentracking.Activeinfraredpenswererecognizedbythecomputervisionsystemasseparatefromfingersorobjects.Thisallowedforsimultaneoususeofpenandtouchintheuserinterfaces.•Shape(blob)tracking.Simpleshapessuchascircle,squareortriangleshapescouldbetrackedseparately.

Duetotheseadvancedcapabilitiesthatgobeyondtouch,wecallMultiTactionCellsinteractive displays.

Newfunctionalitiesweredevelopedandintroducedwithsimpleonlinesoftwareupdates.Arecentexamplewastheindustry’sfirstopticalHybridTrackingtechnologywhicheliminatestheeffectsofbrightexternallightsourcesintouchtracking.

AnothermajorbenefitofMultiTactiontechnologyisthatitistheonlystackabletouchdisplayinthemarket.Thefrontglassisflushfromedgetoedgeandbezelsareminimizedmakingitpossibletoplaceupto24Cellstogetherintableorwallinstallations.MultiTouch’sproprietaryCornerstoneSDKallowsthesedemandingapplicationstobeimplemented.

Motivation for Remote Management Marketsegmentssuchascorporate,retail,digitalsignageandeducationmarketsaregrowingatafastpace.InteractivedisplayinstallationsusingMultiTactionCellsarebecominglarger,incorporatingthou-sandsofunitsinmultiplephysicallocations,andbecomingmoreandmorebusinesscritical.Minimizingtheamountofonsitelabor,whetherrelatedtoinstallingoroperatingthem,hastobeminimizedinordertocreateacosteffectivesolution.Atthesametime,availabilityofthesystemneedstobemaximized.

Application monitoringWhiledisplaymonitoringisusuallyusefulfortechnicalsupportpeople,Multitouch Cornerstone application monitoringisusefulforbothtechnicalpeopleandpeoplewithinterestonuseractivities.Applicationmonitoringcomponenthastheabilitytoperformreal-time screen-cast from multiple installations,toenableadministratorstoseetheactivityoneachdisplay.

Monitoring CellsInallphasesoftheinstallationlife-cycletherearetimeswhenonewantstomonitorthewell-beingofthedisplays,andinspecttheiroperation.Site Manager firmware connectionallowstheadminstratortocheckthestatusofeachdisplayseparatelyandinspecttheiroperatingtemperatureandotherhealthparameters.Thischeckcanbeperformedfromanylocation,forexampleviaVPN,sothattheadminstratordoesnotneedtophysicallygototheinstallation(whichmightbeonanothercontinent),orusespecificcomputerfortheadminstrationtask.

Adjusting Cell ParametersBesidesmonitoringCellsitmaybenecessarytoadjusttheoperationofthedisplays.Apracticalcasecouldaretailchainthatwantstointroducemarkerstotheirproducts,asanupgradetoexistingsetup.InthiscasetheadministratorcanturnonthemarkertrackingintheMultiTactionCellsusingSite Manager firmware connection,andconfigureitremotely.Insomecasesthesenewfeaturesmightrequireupdatingthefirmwareinthedisplays,togainaccesstothenewfeatures.Thefirmwarecanbeupdatedremotely,withoutvisitinganyofthesiteswiththedisplays.

Connecting Displays to the Application ComputerOneofthebasictaskswhensettingupanewinstallationistoconnectthedisplaytotheapplicationcomputer,andsetupthespatiallayoutbetweendisplaysconnectedtothesamecomputer.SiteManagerhelpswiththispairing processwithtoolsto:

Thisworkisusuallydoneon-site,usingalaptop.Toperformtheconfiguration,theuserstartsaCornerstone-basedapplicationontheapplicationPCs.UsuallytheSiteManagerlaptopisusedon-sitetoscanforavailableCells,andsetupthetouchconfigurationontheapplicationPCs.TheuseofSiteManagersavestimebygivinggraphicaltoolsthatturnscomplexlayoutconfigurationtasksintosimplegrad-and-dropoperations.

Monitoring User Activity on the InstallationsWhentheinstallationsareoperationalthereisoftenadesiretomonitoruseractivity,toseehowtheapplicationsareused.Themainreasonsforthisare:

WithSite Manager application control moduletheadministratorcanswitchfluentlybetweendif-ferentapplicationsanddatasets,usingbothCornerstone-basedapplicationsandthird-partyappli-cations.TheonlyrequirementisthatthereneedstobeatleastoneCornerstone-basedapplicationrunninginthecomputer,toactasahostthatmanagesapplicationswitching.

Distributing New Content to the installationsInretail,museum,andotherverticalsegmentsitisnecessarytoupdatecontentaftertheinitialinstal-lationwork,forexampleduetoanewcampaign.Forthispurposethecontentcreatorcanhaveatestsystemfortryingoutdifferentdatasets,andpluginconfigurations.OncethecontentisreadyitcanbeupsyncedtotheSyncserver,andthendownsyncedtoalltheend-userinstallations.Thecontentcanbeupdatedatanytimewhichallowsfortimelyandcontrolleddeliveryofnewcontent.

Thesynchronizationisbasedoncomparingthedifferencesbetweenthedatasets,sothatonlyneworchangedfilesarecopied.TheSyncserverdoesnotlimitthecontenttypesorrelationshipsinanyway.Thusoneisfreetouseanykindimages,videos,XML-files,data-basesetc.thatareincludedinthedataset..
