In 2008, the University Management proposed the establishment of a Naming Committee as a priority transformation initiative. The UJ Council formed a Naming Committee Executive Task Team to proactively address the overall Naming Strategy of the University. The first meeting took place on 24 November 2008. The view of the Committee was that the naming and the renaming of properties, events and facilities were fundamentally important strategic interventions, which should be inclusive, definitive, and not so bold as to exclude. For the next six years, a successful and transformative naming process was followed, resulting in a number of new spaces being named, and a few spaces being renamed. This document provides an overview of the work that has been done since the establishment of the Council Naming Committee.

In 2010, the process of renaming the residences started after thorough consultations, which were held with each residence leadership and alumni groups. It became evident that the renaming of the residences should be put on hold and that the focus should rather be on the naming of the new residences as a priority.

The University also changed its strategic direction and focus in 2013, with a special emphasis on Global Excellence and Stature. In 2015, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of this new and exciting University, which has shown remarkable progress in a short span of time. In view of this, attention was given in 2015 to the renaming of the student residences and day houses on all four campuses. This was in line with the ongoing transformation process of the institution, which is to create an institutional inclusion and cohesion.

The new names of the residences and day houses were motivated and debated by the students from the various residences and day houses. After finalising the names, the residences were involved in writing manifestos for their residences. The new names for the student residences and day houses reflect the brand and the values of the University of Johannesburg as the pan-African epicentre of critical intellectual inquiry, its role in society, its location in the City of Johannesburg, and its focus on global excellence and stature.

Perskor Building Qoboza/Klaaste Building There was a time when black journalists were the pride of their community. Political meetings would not start until someone from The Star – Africa Edition, the Rand Daily Mail – township edition, The World or, later, The Sowetan was present. This respect flowed from the fact that black journalists had, under the influence of lack consciousness, contextualised their role in terms of their reality in the dynamics of the day – just as white journalists interpreted their responsibilities in line with their world view.

Percy Qoboza was an outspoken critic of the apartheid regime, he functioned under very strict white editorial control. In 1968 he became news editor and by 1974 he had become the editor, and ensured that The World was the most circulated black newspaper in the country. Prior to his appointment as editor, Aggrey Klaaste was editor of The Sowetan from 1988 until 2002, taking the newspaper into democracy in 1994, but more significantly, in 1988 he introduced the concept of “Nation Building”.
