The theme of an earthly paradise, orArcadia, has been popular in the arts sinceantiquity. In France during the early 1900s,this idea of a mystical place of contentmentand harmony was an especially expressiveand powerful theme. The lecture exploresthe theme in three such paintings of thetime: Paul Gauguin’s Where Do We ComeFrom? What Are We? Where Are We Going?;Paul Cezanne’s The Large Bathers andHenri Matisse’s Bathers By A River. Thesethree masterpieces create a dialogue andtake visitors to the very foundations ofmodern art. Examples of art from Romanantiquity, Leonardo, Raphael, Giorgione,and Rubens will also be examined.

Following in Bellow’s footsteps, Hopper painted theworld of New York filled with automats, movie houses, railyardsand brownstones. Academic Art or “Academism” relates to the art produced inassociation with the French Academy and its influence on theParis Salons in the 19th century. Academic artists adhered tothe standards dictated by the French Academie des BeauxArts. Most were practitioners of Neoclassicism or Romanticism.William Adolphe Bouguereau, Alexander Cabanet, ThomasCouture and Jean Leon Gerome are a few of the leadingfigures of Academic art to be discussed. Academic paintingsonce would only fetch a few hundred dollars at auctions, somenow fetch millions. This illustrated lecture will be a uniqueopportunity to view the works of these major artists.

Mary Vahey presents an illustrated lecture focusing on PabloPicasso’s career-long black and white palette. Surveying hisoeuvre from 1904-1971, Picasso’s Black and White comprisespaintings as well as sculpture and drawings. His use of black andwhite was his way of carrying on a tradition begun by Spanishpainters like Vélazquez and Goya, although he interpreted theirideas in modern and sometimes radical ways.

Celebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth and quality, theBarnes Foundation’s art collection includes works by some of thegreatest European and American masters of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and early Modern art, as well as African sculpture,American paintings and Asian prints. Perhaps one of the most influential musicals of the century,Showboat combined the talents of Jerome Kern and OscarHammerstein II. The story spans 50 years and deals primarily withthe fortunes of an impressionable young woman, her father whoowns a showboat and a troubled riverboat gambler/actor. It is amusical that has been more frequently revised than any other. Thislecture will provide an opportunity to hear such well-known songsas Old Man River, Make Believe, and Bill, and to examine the waysin which Showboat has been adjusted by various artists toaccommodate our changing sense of what the work should mean.Kern’s songs remain a vital part of our cultural conversation.

Toddler-Time is a lively program of stories, songs, fingerplays,movement, a craft project and a short film for a child accompaniedby an adult. Registration is required and is being accepted in theChildren's Room.

Toddlers & The Arts is a program designed to introducetoddlers to literature, music, puppetry, movement, storytelling andsimple crafts. Registration is required and being accepted in theChildren’s Room beginning Wednesday, October 3.

stoRY-timetuesdays: october 16, November 13, december 11 at 6:30Pm

(3+ years)Story-Time is a 30 minute program for children who can attend without

a parent. The program consists of stories and a short film. You don’t haveto register, just come down and join us for an enjoyable time.
