Solutions for fuel-efficient engines and for hybrid and electric vehicles
As CO2 and NOx emissions standards become more stringent worldwide, Renesas is providing kit solutions composed of microcontrollers matched with analog and power devices optimized for use in inverters for fuel-efficient engines or hybrid and electric vehicles.
The fusion of sophisticated control operations required by the next generation of fuel-efficient engines with high-precision sensing technology and digital assist technology makes possible the realization of low-loss analog technology that benefits from greater precision and integration. In addition, the physical volume of motor control inverters has been reduced by half.

Multiple sensors are employed in automobiles to keep track conditions inside and outside the vehicle, and in future their number will continue to increase. In addition, the volume of data handled by automotive systems is growing rapidly due linkage with cloud services and the demands of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Two key technologies that will play an important role in the coming age of self-driving vehicles are cognitive computing, to appropriately process enormous amounts of data in real time, and human-machine interface (HMI) computing, to convey information to the vehicle and the driver. R-Car H3 substan-tially boosts the capabilities available to cognitive computing and HMI computing applications. It is a third-generation automotive computing platform suitable for sophisticated vehicle information systems and safe driving assist systems.
nAutomotive computing platform for the age of self-driving vehicles• The computing performance is superior to that of the earlier R-Car H2.
• For safe driving assist systems, cognitive computing performance has been improved to enable accurate processing in real time of large volumes of information from vehicle cameras and sensors of various types. Complex processing is supported, including obstacle detection, sensing of the driver’s condition, and prediction and avoidance of hazards.
• For vehicle information systems, HMI computing performance has been improved to enable accurate processing in real time of large volumes of information from outside the system and appropriate notification of the driver. This makes it possible to create sophisticated applications and a rich HMI.

In recent years the use of electronics in vehicles has increased alongside remarkable advances in the functionality and performance of automobiles. Electronic control units (ECUs) are now used throughout the vehicle interior, in power windows, airbags, lamps, mirrors, doors, seats, and more. The proliferation of these electronic control units brings with it an increase in the software develop-ment burden. Making it possible to use common software for multiple ECUs is becoming ever more important as a way to boost development efficiency.
nAmong the biggest 16-bit microcontroller lineups in the industry
• The RL78/F15 group of automotive microcontrollers belongs to the RL78 family, which combines power consumption among the lowest in the industry with high performance. It offers advanced functionality and is fully compatible with the RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 groups.
• Among 16-bit microcontrollers for vehicle control systems, the number of product versions available (127) is among the biggest in the industry.
• As a development environment, Renesas offers the new CS+ integrated development environment and the E1 integrated on-chip debugging emulator.
RL78/F15 Features
1. Flexible product selection for various vehicle control systems from 127 products lineup
• The RL78/F15 lineup has been extended to a package pin count of 144 pins and on-chip memory capacity of 512KB.
• When combined with the existing Renesas RL78/F13 and RL78/F14 groups, the available pin counts now range from 20 to 144 pins.
2. Full compatibility with RL78/F13 and RL78/F14
• The RL78/F15 is built around the same CPU core as the existing Renesas RL78/F13 and RL78/F14. The three groups are fully compatible, simplifying the task of porting software.
• Full compatibility makes it easy to deal with issues such as insufficient ROM or RAM or the need for a larger pin count due to ECU upgrades or sudden additions or changes to the specifications during system development.
• The manufacturing process technology used has a proven mass production record with existing products, so procedures such as certification can be completed quickly.
3. Improved communication functions, including two CAN channels. Ideal for vehicle control systems such as body control modules (BCMs).
• Dual CAN channels make it possible to implement independent CAN communication for control and diagnostics.
• The hardware LIN (max. 3 channels) is ideal for communication applications involving centralized control, such as body control modules (BCMs).
• The IE bus supports car audio applications in the vehicle information field.
