Week 10 - Term 3, 18th September 2013 Dear Parents, If you have informed the school that your child is diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis or has asthma medication at school, you will have received a letter from the school this week. After a recent medical enquiry it has been decided that parents are in the best position to decide if their child should carry their own medication at school. For many parents, this decision will be based on the age and level of maturity of their child. The school is still able to keep medication under our current practice but we do need for that to be a conscious decision by parents and to be supported by the returning of the note sent home. Students should clearly be made aware of how and when their medication needs to be accessed. Schools were also recently required to distribute a new medical information note to the parents of each attending student. Thank you to those families who have returned the information. If you have not could you get it in to the school as soon as possible. Many parents have indicated on the return form that their child suffers from asthma. Unless you have presented medication to the school and have provided us with a current medication action plan for anaphylaxis or asthma you will not have received the follow up letter this week. Please notify the office with any changes to medical conditions or medication immediately it occurs. The article printed in the newsletter provides more information about anaphylaxis. Every child needs to have this information so that in the event of a medical situation they understand how to react. Please take a few minutes to discuss anaphylaxis with your child. The school holidays are on the count down now! Have a wonderful break and come back rested and renewed for the last term of the year. If you thought school was busy already, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful rain this week! Sue Mackay Principal. SCHOOL RESUMES FOR STUDENTS FOR TERM 4

School Contributions are now due Please remember that voluntary School Contributions are now due. This is the only additional source of external funds the school receives to provide much needed resourcing to classrooms. If you have not already done so it would be greatly appreciated if you could forward those payments to the school. Contributions are: Library Fund – $60 per child or $100 per family Technology Fund - $60 per child or $100 per family School Uniform Shop The P & C run our uniform shop three days per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for a brief purchasing period before school. The P & C are in desperate need for a parent to undertake this task on Wednesday mornings. Start time is approx. 8.45am and you would normally be well and truly finished by 9.10am. If a parent cannot be found the Uniform Shop will be closing on Wednesday morning. Please consider assisting if you have some time. ANAPHYLAXIS INFORMATION What is an EpiPen® and an Anapen®? EpiPen® and Anapens® are the emergency treatment for children who are having an anaphylactic reaction. What is anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe and sometimes sudden allergic reaction. If your child has been diagnosed by a doctor as being at risk of anaphylaxis there are some important things to remember that will help the school to support your child’s health care needs. You need to keep us informed if your child is diagnosed as being at risk of anaphylaxis or if his or her condition changes. This includes if they have an anaphylactic reaction while not at school. The school can only respond to risks it knows about. Why do you need to provide the school with your child’s current ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis and an EpiPen® or Anapen® signed by their doctor? The plan sets out the steps the school needs to follow in an emergency. It is essential for us to have this to keep your child safe. The school will keep a copy of your child’s ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis stored with your child’s EpiPen® or Anapen®. Why it is important to talk regularly with your child about some simple steps to help keep them safe? It is important to regularly talk with your child about when and where they are at risk of contact with the things they are allergic to and how to avoid this. If you have told them not to take part in sharing food at school, regularly remind them of this. Reassure your child that if they do come into contact with something they are allergic to or they feel unwell at school they won’t get into trouble. They need to tell a teacher immediately. If you request that your child carry an EpiPen® or Anapen® with them to school and at school you will still need to provide the school with at least one additional EpiPen® or Anapen® for storage in a central location within the school and for access by staff in an emergency. The school will contact you about any request you make for your son or daughter to carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen®.

Why does the school need to know if your son or daughter is carrying their own EpiPen® or Anapen®? Staff need to know your child carries an EpiPen® or Anapen® in an emergency. For this reason this information will be included in your child’s individual health care plan. They also need to be able to find it quickly so it is important that it be in an easily identifiable and accessible spot (eg. not a locker). DEPUTY’S REPORT PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE Last week four students were selected to represent our school in the regional finals of the Premier’s Spelling Bee. All our students performed very well. Congratulations to

Jace S who came first in the senior division and Kalani P who came first in the junior section. These girls will now

go to state level in Sydney. Austyn B was runner up in the junior section and Dakota S came 7th in the senior division in a very strong field of 40 talented

spellers. Congratulations girls.

Boys’ Basketball Report

Congratulations to the Kororo Boys’ Basketball team that

travelled to Bathurst last week to play in the finals series

of the NSW PSSA Knockout. The boys played Tumut

Public School, in a quarter final game, who were very

well-drilled and athletic. Unfortunately the Kororo boys

were defeated in this game which meant they were out of

the main draw. They went on to play Regentville Public

School and lost by a small margin.

Even though they lost both games the boys played

extremely well displaying some great speed and

exceptional skills. Being in the top 8 teams in the state is

no small feat.

I was very proud of the sportsmanship shown by all team

members and enjoyed coaching them throughout the year.

Thank you very much to all the parents, grandparents

and friends that travelled with the team.

Well done to all the boys- Ethan S, Cody P, Matt K,

Earth N, Oscar C, Finley W, Sid S, Lochie A, Lucas N and

Jesse C (who was unable to travel to the finals).
