Left-hander Anthony Banda gets the nod for Reno, while right-hander Clayton Blackburn will start for Sacramento. Last Night’s Game: The Aces lost for just a third time since the All-Star break as the River Cats won the series opener, 12-4, on Tuesday night at Greater Nevada Field. Playing on a Major League rehab assign- ment, Hunter Pence gave the visitors the lead for good with an opposite-field two-run homer in the fourth. Pence’s shot broke a 1-1 tie and set Matt Buschmann up for his first loss since June 14 at Las Vegas, snapping a personal five-game win streak in the process. Mitch Haniger brought Reno (56-47) within one when he lined an opposite-field solo homer in the fifth, making the score 3-2. Sacramento (47-57) responded with a two-spot in the sixth, capitalizing on four walks and a single. A run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Gabby Guerrero in the home half pulled the Aces back within two at 5-3, but a six-run seventh opened the floodgates for the San Francisco Giants’ top affiliate. Singles by Rando Moreno and Pence ignited the outburst against Alexi Ogando. A sacrifice fly from Travis Ishikawa pushed Sacramento’s advantage to three, before a two-run single by Kelby Tomlinson, two-run triple by Gorkys Hernandez and RBI single by Chris Denorfia turned the tight game into a rout. A run-scoring single by Ildemaro Vargas in the eighth gave Reno its final run, and Sacramento’s Juan Ciriaco capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the ninth off Adam Loewen. Buschmann (7-7) suffered the defeat after allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. His counterpart, Adalberto Mejia, improved to 4-1 after churning five innings of two-run ball. The southpaw scattered five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in his eighth career Triple-A start. Tomlinson led Sacramento with four knocks, while Pence and Hernandez each notched three-hit performances. Haniger, Vargas and Ed Lucas recorded two hits apiece in the loss. Clayton Blackburn: 23-year-old Clayton Blackburn returns from the disabled list to make his 19th ap- pearance (17th start) for the River Cats this season. Through 18 appearances with Sacramento to date, Blackburn is 5-7 with a 5.03 ERA (51 ER/91.1 IP) with 66 strikeouts against 25 walks. He has struggled over his last four starts, going 0-3 with a 10.71 ERA (23 ER/19.1 IP), having yielded 28 hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts. The Texas native spent all of 2015 with Sacramento, posting a 10-4 record and a 2.85 ERA in 23 games (20 starts), limiting the opposition to a .269 batting average. He was at his best against Reno in three starts, compiling a 2-0 record in three games (two starts) with a 1.35 ERA (2 ER/13.1 IP), scattering 11 hits (two home runs) with no walks and 15 strikeouts. In 118 career Minor League games (107 starts), Blackburn is 38-28 with a 3.26 ERA (221 ER/610.0 IP) and 570 strikeouts against 133 free passes. The Giants selected Blackburn in the 16th round (507th overall) of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Edmond Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Okla. Entering the 2016 campaign, the righty was ranked by Baseball America (No. 8) and MLB.com (No. 12) among San Francisco’s top prospects. Tied for Second: Reno enters tonight’s game tied for second place with Fresno, 3.5 games behind first-place Tacoma in the Pacific Northern Division. Through 103 games last year, Reno was tied for second, 9.0 games back of the Grizzlies for the division lead. Opportunities Out the Window: The Aces went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position last night, marking the ninth time this season where Reno has had 10 or more at- bats with RISP but recorded just one hit or less in those situations. To no surprise, the Aces are just 1-8 in those contests, the lone victory coming on July 2 at El Paso in a 5-3, 13-inning win, when Reno finished 1-for-14 with RISP. H-anige-R: Mitch Haniger hit another home run last night, his sixth in five games, ninth in 11 contests and 19th in 44 overall games since joining the Aces on June 10. Haniger currently sits sixth among Minor League leaders in homers with 24, having hit an additional five at Double-A Mobile before his promotion to Triple-A. HR Trios: In 2015, Jamie Romak (27), O’Brien (26) and Nick Evans (17) combined for 70 home runs, the most by an Aces trio in team history, narrowly breaking the 66 long balls hit between Cody Ransom (27), Wily Mo Pena (21) and Andy Tracy/Brandon Allen (18 apiece) in 2011. This year, Kyle Jensen (22), O’Brien (21) and Haniger (19) have amounted 62 home runs with a whopping 41 games remaining on the schedule. Sactown Success in the BLC: With last night’s loss, the Aces dropped to 21-36 in 57 contests against Sacramento at Greater Nevada Field. The division rivals have played one another 16 times each of the last seven seasons, eight in each city. When in Reno, the River Cats have won or split the series the last six years, with the Aces taking five of eight games in 2009. Buschmann Bruised: Matt Buschmann’s personal five-game win streak was snapped last night, a streak which included four consecutive victories at Greater Nevada Field. Among the five outings where he has allowed four-plus runs this season, four have occurred in Reno. Banda at his Best: Tonight’s Aces starter, Anthony Banda, has acclimated to the PCL over his last three starts. In his first two outings, he went 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA (9 ER/9.0 IP), allowing 17 hits (three home runs). Banda turned the tide on July 6 against Tacoma, however, when he fired six innings of two-run ball. Over his past three starts, the 22-year-old southpaw owns a 2-0 record and a 2.66 ERA (6 ER/20.1 IP). He has allowed 18 hits and four walks with 16 strikeouts along the way. Multi-Mitch: Haniger went 2-for-4 last night, giving him 22 multi-hit performances in 44 games with the Aces. Since his promotion from Mobile on June 10, Haniger leads all of professional baseball with 19 home runs and 31 extra-base hits (one triple, 11 doubles). He also ranks third in the Minor Leagues with 46 RBI and first in Triple-A with a .389 average (65-for-167). In 55 games with the BayBears, Haniger hit .294 (58-for-197) with 21 extra-base hits (five home runs, two triples, 14 doubles). Through 103 Games: The Aces are 56-47 through 103 games, seven games ahead of last season’s 49-54 mark. The starting rotation has posted a 4.84 ERA (305 ER/567.2 IP) compared to last year’s 5.57 ERA (330 ER/533.1 IP) in 103 games. Last year, the offense had scored 531 runs through 103 contests (5.16 runs per game), equal to this season’s 531 runs in 103 games (5.16 runs per game). STREAKS This Date in Aces History The Aces are 3-4 all-time on games played on July 27. On the 27th of July in 2013, Aces right-hander Zeke Spruill pitched against Tacoma lefty James Paxton. The Aces scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. It held as Spruill went eight shutout innings and Kevin Munson closed out the ninth for a 1-0 win.
