Both games will be seven-inning affairs. Right-hander Matt Buschmann gets the nod for Reno against Salt Lake left-hander Nate Smith in Game 1, while Aces righty Kyle Drabek will oppose Bees right-hander Kyle Kendrick in the nightcap. Saturday’s Game: The Bees clubbed three doubles during a four-run seventh inning to rally past the Aces, 5-3, at Smith’s Ballpark. Fresh off recording his 1,600th minor league hit in Friday night’s loss, Jason Bourgeois clubbed two doubles as part of a three-hit performance in Reno’s second consecutive defeat. A night after finishing 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranding a runner at third with less than two outs three separate times, the Aces again struggled in clutch situations. Reno finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and are batting .086 (3-for-35) in those spots as a team over the last four games. The Aces jumped in front early, thanks to Bourgeois, who drilled the second pitch of the game for a double and ended up at third on a fielding error by Todd Cunningham in center. Todd Glaesmann wasted little time giving Reno an advantage, scoring Bourgeois on a groundout to short. Salt Lake tied the game at one in the second on back-to-back knocks by Kaleb Cowart and Jett Bandy. Cowart doubled with one away before scoring on Bandy’s RBI single. Knotted at one, Bees starter Chris Jones settled in and retired 10 straight be- fore Sócrates Brito ended the run with a single to open the fifth. Jack Reinheimer then lined a single to right. After a sacrifice bunt by Sean Jamieson, Brett Hayes gave the Aces another lead with a groundout to short. Moments later, Bourgeois pushed the lead to two with his second double of the game. The score remained 3-1 until the home half of the seventh when Kaleb Fleck’s recent struggles continued. After a scoreless sixth, Fleck ran into trouble in the seventh, eventually giving up a game-tying two-run double to former Aces outfielder Nick Buss. Dominic Leone entered to keep the game tied, but like Fleck, surrendered a two-run double to Bandy, providing the final margin. Edwin Escobar took a no-decision for Reno after throwing five innings of one-run ball. Jones (2-2) efficiently tossed 85 pitches over seven innings for Salt Lake (17-13), leveling his record after allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Fleck (0-3) suffered his third consecutive loss in as many appearances, giving up three earned runs on two hits and two walks over 1 1/3 innings. Lucas Luetge closed out the ninth for his first save. Nate Smith: 24-year-old Nate Smith starts for the Bees tonight in game one of the doubleheader. Through six starts this season, Smith is 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA, having allowed 17 runs (15 earned) on 34 hits over 35.2 innings with nine walks and 31 strikeouts. Opponents are batting .252 against the southpaw. Smith was outdueled by Aaron Blair last year on August 11 in Reno, going 6.2 innings while allowing one unearned run on five hits in a 3-0 Aces win. Smith owns a 25-17 record and 3.53 ERA over 66 games (60 starts) in the minors. He was selected by the Angels in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Furman University. Kyle Kendrick: 31-year-old Kyle Kendrick starts for the Bees tonight in game two of the twinbill. Through three starts this year, Kendrick is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA, having allowed 12 earned runs on 19 hits over 18.2 innings with four walks and 12 strikeouts. Opponents are batting .268 against the righty. This season marks Kendrick’s first PCL experience. He owns a 35-51 record and 4.09 ERA over 121 games (115 starts) in the minors. Kendrick also has made 253 Major League appearances (212 starts), going 81-81 with a 4.63 ERA. He was selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2003 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Mount Vernon (Va.) High School. The Angels signed Kendrick to a minor league contract on April 23. Doubleheader History: Reno has played 22 doubleheaders in franchise history. The Aces have won 6 twin- bills and lost 7, with 9 splits. Last season, Reno went 3-1-2 in doubleheaders, including a split at Salt Lake on May 10. The Aces and Bees have played six doubleheaders all-time, and Reno holds a 2-1-3 record. Scoring Drought: The Aces have scored four runs or less over each of their last ten games. Reno has been outscored 34-21 during the stretch, with all four of their wins coming by one run. In 2015, the Aces endured a 10-game stretch from April 24-May 4 where they scored four runs or less in each game, faring much worse with a 1-9 record. Limiting the Long Ball: Aces pitchers have given up a PCL-low 12 home runs this season -- six apiece surrendered by the rotation and bullpen -- for an average of 0.41 allowed per game. In 2014, the Aces’ staff posted the lowest franchise mark for home runs allowed per game at 0.74 (106 HR in 144 G), en route to a Pacific Conference Championship. During their 2012 Triple-A Championship run, Aces pitchers yielded 164 home runs (1.14 per game), most in the PCL. Caution, No Running: Aces catchers Tuffy Gosewisch and Brett Hayes have cut down nearly half of would- be basestealers this season, eliminating 12 out of 25 attempting to steal a bag. Gosewisch has caught 7-of-15 while Hayes has erased 5-of-10. Blown Lead: The Aces blew a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning Saturday night, marking their first loss (9-1) when holding a lead through six full innings this season. Bourgeois Keeps Raking: Jason Bourgeois reached 1,600 hits for his minor league career with his ninth- inning single Friday night, and he added another three hits in Saturday’s loss. Bourgeois is MiLB’s active hits leader at 1,603, and he leads the Aces with a .380 average, third-best in the PCL. Familiar Faces: The Aces’ current roster has eight players who were on the 2015 roster, including: RHPs En- rique Burgos, Kaleb Fleck, Evan Marshall and Matt Stites, INF Mike Freeman and OFs Zach Borenstein, Todd Glaesmann and Peter O’Brien. The Bees boast two former Aces on their current roster: LHP Tyler Skaggs (2012-13), who is currently on the DL, and OF Nick Buss (2015). O’Brien, Shipley Earn PCL Weekly Honors: Peter O’Brien and Braden Shipley were named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week this past Monday. From April 25-May 1, O’Brien hit .500 (12-for-24) with 10 RBI, 7 runs scored, 4 home runs, 1 triple and 2 doubles. He hit safely in every game during the week, and has a current 9-game hitting streak. Shipley worked 13 scoreless innings over two starts this past week, allowing seven hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts. The Aces won both of the right-hander’s starts, defeating Fresno on Tuesday and Albuquerque on Sunday.
