MAGNOLIASThe Highlight Acting Troupe will present Steel Magnolias on Friday and Saturday, October 18, 19, 25, 26, at 8 pm; and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 27, at 2 pm. The performances will take place at the Brunswick Grange, Rt. 7 and 142 (in back of Stewart’s). There is also a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee and Ouiser; Annelle’s transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and Truvy’s relationships with the men in her family. CALL FOR SINGERS!Capital Community Voices, a four-part (SATB) choral ensemble which presents everything from Brahms to Broadway, classical to contemporary, is accepting new members. No auditions are required and all voices are welcome, especially tenors and basses. Rehearsals are held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays during the Fall (September to December) and Spring (January to May) semesters at Columbia High School in East Greenbush. COMPELLED CHRISTIAN CHURCH TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY

Three years ago, on a Wednesday night in late October, the former Green Hills Alliance Church held its first Wednesday Night Compelled service & small group time. On Friday, July 12th, our beloved 15 year old grandson, Andy Cummings was critically injured in Unadilla, NY while on his last lap of practice run on his quad. Flown by Lifestar to Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse, Andy was treated for a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and remained in Pediatric ICU for close to a month. Andy is now a little closer to home, working hard at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady, NY. He is receiving Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy daily.Although we are heartbroken, we are optimistic that our “Andyman” will make a full recovery over time. We recognize that he has a long and difficult journey ahead of him and we know that the days won’t always be easy.On October 26th, we will host a Family Style Roast Beef Dinner at the Berlin Firehouse in Berlin, NY from 4PM to 7PM to raise money that can be applied toward the tremendous amount of medical expenses Andy’s care has necessitated. GILEAD’S BODY & SOUL PANTRYHow did your pantry look near the end of September? Needed to do laundry, but no detergent? Worried about dinner? I guess you needed to come to our Body and Soul Pantry. Those who attended in September enjoyed the meal and will be back again.October 31, 2013 will be our next lunch and dinner. We know the date is Halloween, but you will not be tricked if you attend. We are working on the final arrangements for the meal and are sure you will love our treat.Our plan is to serve lunch and dinner the last Thursday of each month. At that time, should you need personal hygiene items, we will have them available for you. STORY DINNER HELPS OTHERS AT GILEAD LUTHERAN CHURCH

Donations from Gilead Lutheran Church’s Story Dinner helped a victim with colon cancer. The evening started out with a picnic supper with food donated by committee members as well as desserts donated by attendees.Following the meal, a very dear friend of Michelle Gordon’s told those people present of Michelle’s battle with stage four colon cancer. This would normally sound very depressing, but Michelle is the type of person who could add humor to a difficult story.At the end of the evening, people generously contribute $270.00 and walked away with the feeling of sadness of a family going through so much and yet a feeling of gratitude of being able to help in some way.That evening was slightly different from others which Gilead has had. Each month of dinners brings a different story and maybe words of a

song or hymn. Each month, money is contributed to a cause. This year, four of our causes are Wounded Warriors, Damien Center, Body & Soul Pantry and ELCA Hunger Appeal.Please stop by for an evening of fun and fellowship. ELECTION DAY LUNCHEONWhat is the best part of your Election Day? Could it be electing who you want to represent you for the next four years? I think the best part for me is having lunch with all my friends at Gilead Lutheran Church. They have my favorite Clam Chowder and I can get a sandwich or a hot dog and dessert. I have met many people there over the years, and now I feel that many of these people I can call my friends.I have enjoyed my meal so much that I have even taken a pint of the chowder home to have later in the week. I understand this year I can pick up a pint of chowder for $4 or $7.50 for a 30 oz. jar. For those people who are unable to get to Gilead for lunch, you may call Darlene at 279-9552 and order your chowder for pick up.Lunch is served from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. NIGHT AT THE RACES SCHEDULEDThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Rensselaer County cordially invites all to join in on a fun-filled evening of horse racing on November 2, 2013. We will be conducting a ten race card with win, place, show, daily double, quinella and exacta wagering at the Boys & Girls Club, located at 544 Broadway, Rensselaer, NY. Post Time for the first race is 6:30 PM, with doors opening at 5:45 PM. Also during a break in the action, we will be viewing the live broadcast of the 2013 Breeders Cup from Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles, California. Post time for the Breeders Cup is 8:35 PM. There are many ways to participate, with advance tickets available for $20 each, or $25 each at the door. You can also become the owner of one or more of the participating thoroughbreds for a charge of $20 for each horse purchased. As the owner of a horse, you name your horse and your jockey, and they will be displayed in the official race program. If your horse wins the race, then you win $50 as the owner. For a $100 contribution, you can sponsor an entire race. You get to name the race and you also get a full page ad in the official race program. Attending with a group?, then you can purchase a VIP table for $300. You will get preferred seating for up to 10 people, and two complimentary bottles of champagne at your table.Additionally, food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Rensselaer County Housing Resources (RCHR) currently has grant funding available to assist local residents with obtaining and maintaining their homes. RCHR has been awarded grant funds under three government programs for down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, home rehabilitation projects, and/or home modifications to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. To improve accessibility, income-eligible homeowners and renters in Rensselaer County may receive grant funding to make enhancements to their homes. Home improvements include items such as building ramps and widening doorways. Applicants who are Veterans are particularly encouraged to apply and will find that the income eligibility limits are higher for them. The Homeowner Rehabilitation Program can assist income-eligible homeowners with home repairs such as health and safety repairs, roof replacement, structural, electrical, plumbing and heating system repairs or replacements, window replacements and energy efficiency measures. Grant funds are also available to assist income-eligible first-time home buyers with funds to be used for down payment and/or closing costs at the time of purchase.Income-eligible Rensselaer County residents outside the City of Troy may apply for these grant opportunities. In addition to income-eligibility, applicants must be current on their mortgage, property taxes and homeowners insurance at the time of application in order to qualify. RECYCLING IN THE VILLAGE OF NASSAUVillage of Nassau residents who want to join the fight in saving the environment and save a few tax dollars at the same time, there is no better place to start than at home. That is because the amount of trash each home produces increases the Village’s Refuse tax and ends up in a landfill.Follow a few simple tips to conserve resources and save landfill space. In turn, you will be providing a healthier environment now and in the future. Recycling will also assists in maintaining our current Refuse tax. Each village resident can make a positive impact on the environment simply by recycling. Every week County Waste provides curbside recycling pick-up for the following: paper, newsprint, magazines, junk

mail, phone books, box board, egg carton, cardboard, tissue rolls; plastic bottles and jugs, paper milk and juice containers; glass bottles and jars, tin, aluminum and bi-metals cans and tops and clean aluminum foil, foil trays and empty aerosol cans. Village Law allows each resident, one 64-gallon pail, per unit; which is not to overflow with trash and the cover must be completely closed. First-time violators will receive written notification about their excessive trash. Second time violators will not have their trash picked-up until they are in compliance. It will be the responsibility of the owner to dispose of the trash properly. Trash bags may be purchased for $2.00 each at the Village Hall for additional household trash, not to include any construction and demolition debris that will not fit into your regulated 64-gallon pail. The Village Hall hours are: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

EVERYBODY WINS! READING MENTORS NEEDED IN LOCAL ELEM. SCHOOLS

Jim Yando has been a reading mentor to a second grader at Arbor Hill Elementary as part of Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County’s EVERYBODY WINS! program for more than two years. Jim says, “I look forward to each Thursday noon and can’t wait to see the smile on my student’s face when he sees me. The students are really excited about reading and spending time during lunch with the readers. His interest in books has definitely increased since we started reading together. I can definitely see a difference in his reading since we started.”Jim has helped to recruit his co-workers at Aflac to participate in EVERYBODY WINS! “I think the program is worth the time and helps provide a valuable opportunity for students that may need the extra help. Literacy is so important to young students since it really establishes a strong foundation for learning and future success.” The program is funded through donations from the Pitney Bowes.
