PICTURING NATURE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO NATURE PHOTOGRAPHYDyken Pond Environmental Education Center is offering a nature photography workshop for all levels of photogra-phers on June 14th from 10am-12pm. This class will be instructed by two well-known professional photographers; Denise Hackert-Stoner and Scott Stoner. They will cover the basic concept of nature photography including light, com-position and aspects of simple editing. So bring your ques-tions and your camera – be it cell phone, point-and-shoot or digital SLR. This program will be $10 per person or $5 per member. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. LOCAL ARTIST MIKE HAYES TO DISPLAY PAINTINGS AT SLCAPaintings by local artist Mike Hayes are on display at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts from May 17 - June 30. The paintings include recognizable scenes from Aver-ill Park, West Sand Lake, Poestenkill and Brunswick.

Mike grew up in Poestenkill and is a graduate of Averill Park High School (‘82). He went to the Memphis College of Art and majored in Fine Art Painting. Returning to the area after graduation, Mike was re-inspired by this area and its beau-ty. He is an illustrator at Overit in Albany where he works in the Motion department. On weekends- you may see him painting along the roadsides or in the fields and woods.

GROW IN FAITH! HAVE FUN! CHANGE THE WORLD!Children ages 4-12 are welcome to join children from First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, Bloomingrove Reformed Church, and St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church for their sec-ond cooperative Vacation Bible School this summer. VBS will be held at St. Timothy’s, 470 Winter Street Ext., De-freestville, from August 4th – 8th, 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We will be reprising our very successful Re-New VBS with its emphasis on caring for creation. We have been given this wonderful world, now we must learn to be good stew-ards of it! This summer, our theme will be based on the elements of creation! Dark/light, water/land, sun/moon, animals/humans: each day the children will hear part of the story of how this great big world came to be. They will engage in themed songs, crafts, games, hands-on science experiments and planting fun to emphasize the theme of the day. Even our daily snacks are theme coordinated. On Friday evening, at 6:30 PM, it will all come together as campers, family, and friends gather for the Big Camp Extravaganza complete with songs, skits, and ice cream sundaes. COUNTY GARDEN TOUR - JUNE 19THCornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will hold its annual “Rensselaer County Garden Tour” on Thurs-day, June 19, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Eight private gardens will be featured in the Town of Brunswick. This year’s gar-dens include attractive patio and terrace gardens, a garden with a view of the Poestenkill and many specimen trees, a hilltop garden with lovely views, ponds, pools, perennials and much more. FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL DINNEROn Friday, June 13th, The Edward C. Swartz Senior Center will have their “Father’s Day” Special Dinner. This Special Dinner, as is all of our meals at the senior center, open to all seniors. SUPPORT CHS GIRLS’ VARSITY TRACK RAISE FUNDS TO TRAVEL TO NATIONALSColumbia High School, Home of the Blue Devils Girls’ Var-sity Track Team members need to raise money for travel expenses to the 2014 New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track and Field in Greensboro, North Carolina. Come eat at Selen’a Cafe in East Greenbush on Sunday, June 8th starting at Noon. Selena’s Cafe will donate up to 20% for all receipt sales to support CHS Girl’s Varsity Track Team trip. The following girls have broken the school record for Columbia Outdoor Track and Field so far this year. Col-leen Maloney BROKE the 2000 meter steeplechase record running a time of 7:20.37. The old record was 7:31.6. At the same meet in the beginning of May, the 4x400 relay team of Alison Romer, Asia Cornwall, Selena Lott, and Nas-tasja (Tasja) Johnston BROKE the record running a time of 3:58.93. RENSSELAER COUNTY OFFERS PET VACCINATION CLINICSRensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has an-nounced the 2014 schedule of the County’s Rabies Vac-cination Clinics. The clinics aim to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadly disease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentially carry the disease.

“These vaccination clinics for your pets are an excellent step in protecting your family from exposure to this deadly disease. I encourage all pet owners to take advantage of these rabies clinics and the educational information avail-able from our County Health Department on rabies, as well as a host of other health related issues,” said County Execu-tive Jimino. During the upcoming clinics, Rensselaer County Department of Health staff will provide the appropriate ra-bies vaccination and booster shots as mandated by the New York State Department of Health to cats, ferrets and dogs. Owners are asked to present their pets’ most recent immu-nization certificate, and all pets must be secured either in a carrier or on a leash. The first hour of each clinic is dedicated to cats and ferrets with the second hour dedicated to dogs. The dates, locations, times, and contact numbers are as follows:

A NEW RECYCLING OPPORTUNITY! FOR ALL THE COMMUNITY!Zion’s United Church of Christ of Taborton of Sand Lake has started a partnership with greenfiber in a new Community Paper Recycling Program. A green bin is located next to our Church Hall on the western or parking lot side off Tabor-ton Road. Acceptable items: newspapers, phonebooks, office paper, cardboard, cereal boxes, magazines, brown paper bags, construction paper. Unacceptable items: glass, metal, plastic bottles, plastic bags, aluminum, string, Styrofoam.The greenfiber company will use the raw ma-terials to produce natural cellulose fiber insulation, fire and sound products. The Blue Box located between the church hall and the pavilion is another year-round recycling oppor-tunity for the community. Items accepted in the Blue Box include clothing, belts, blankets, drapery, hats, hand bags, paired shoes, sheets, sneakers, towels and stuffed animals. These items are recycled among persons in need by Ameri-can Clothing, a company based in Glen Falls, NY. All com-munity residents are welcome to use both of these outdoor recycling containers at no cost. The containers are located on the side of 744 Taborton Road, 3.2 miles east of the intersection of Routes 66 and 43 at the four-way traffic lights and Cumberland Farms/Gulf.
