I am pleased to announce that our very own Associ-ate Director Rick Long, of Power Equipment Plus,
has been awarded ARA’s Special Service Award for his outstanding service to the association and his dedication as an Asso-ciate Member of ARA of Michigan.
Over the years, Rick has developed a per-sonal relationship with each of our mem-bers and has earned their respect. He has been a great facilitator with the Rent-Tech training program and has spent countless hours recruiting presenters for our annual Winter Conference, as well as being a presenter himself.
Rick is always willing to volunteer his ser-vices to ARAM when the need arises. This year, on short notice, he was able to gath-er member support in Lansing for our Personal Property Tax bill proposal when we spoke before the Michigan Senate Committee on Finance and the House of Representatives Committee on Tax Policy.
Rick will be presented with the Special Service Award at The Rental Show in Ana-heim, California during the ARA Industry Awards Lunch on Sunday, February 17.
Thank you, Rick, for all your service and congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award!
I hope to see everyone in Anaheim.

Winter Conference Is Only Days Away

We recently launched our new ARA of Michigan web site and created a new e-mail address. The new site is found at:
araofmichigan.com
The new e-mail address is:
Don’t forget to add the e-mail address to your contacts so you keep receiving our newsletters! Please check out the site and give us some feedback on it. Let us know what you like or dislike, whether it is easy to navigate and find what you’re looking for, what information you’d like to see on it that is not already there, etc. The new site will be a great source of information for our members and will grow along with us as we grow. You will notice that the ARA has
provided us with a new logo and branding that matches their new, modern look. Our site features an “Events” page to keep you up to date on our conferences and semi-nars, equipment auctions, educa-tional and training opportunities, and other projects we have in the works. There is also a “Hall of Fame” page which highlights some of the pioneers of Michigan’s rental indus-try who foresaw the benefits of forming an association made of small equipment rental businesses. Our web designer is looking for pho-tographs to create a Photo Gallery. If you have some photos you would like to share from some of our past events, please email them to Lori Gardner at Rent Smart: [email protected]. We would love to have an extensive gallery highlighting our members and events.

2018 marks the 6th year that ARAM has
sponsored “Operation: Snowball,” when
up to 10 ARAM member stores choose a
person or family to adopt for the holi-
days and ARAM matches their donation
up to $100 per store. This year, we had
four participating stores. We asked them
to share a little bit about what they did
for their adopted friends:
Delux Rental, Ypsilanti: “We have an
elderly lady who stops in our store on
her way to the Food Bank. We gave her
$200 to help her with everyday essen-
tials.”
True Value Rental/Vassar True Value:
“We adopted a family through the
Thumb Area Mud Runners. We buy
Christmas gifts for the children. We put
together a menu for Christmas dinner,
and all the employees bring in the food.
We ‘buy’ toiletries and household clean-
ers from our store and donate those.”
Superior Equipment & Events, Hough-
ton: Pat and Donna Berryman paid it
forward this year, after suffering torren-
tial floods that destroyed much of their
store inventory. Donna said, “Our com-
munity was devastated by heavy rains
which caused raging, destructive flood
damage. The family we will support lost
their 12-year old son, Thatcher, when a
mudslide hit his bedroom. Heartbreak-
ing.”
Chet’s Rent All, Rochester Hills: “We
adopted two homeless men that we
found through a local church. We will
supply them with socks, boots, long
johns, and portable food items (like
breakfast bars, granola, nuts, etc.).”
A BIG thank you goes to all the stores who participated this year, and please keep this program in mind for next December.
Important Warning Concerning Workers’ Compensation Claims
By TERRY KUNST
Most employers know that they need to carry Workers Compensation insur-ance, but many are not aware of MIOSHA and OSHA notifications in the event of a death or serious injury. If not reported in a timely manner, there are sig-nificant fines that will be imposed on the employer, and these fines are not covered by insurance. My company was recently told of an incident where there was a death of an employee on a Friday night and the employer found out on the following Monday and then reported it. However, because the inci-dent was not reported within 8 hours, as required by law, the employer re-ceived a $30,000 fine from OSHA/MIOSHA! This is good information to know and hopefully will never be needed, but our employers do not need to find out the hard way:
REPORTING A WORKERS’ COMPENSATION CLAIM
Report a workers’ compensation claim immediately. The earlier a claim is re-ported, the sooner it can be resolved. Do not wait to report a claim!
All workers’ compensation claims need to be reported on the “Employer’s Basic Report of Injury Form WC-100.” This form can be found on the State of Michigan web site:
https://www.michigan.gov/documents/wca_WC-100__fillin_121830_7.pdf
Policyholders are encouraged to report workers’ compensation claims directly to their insurance company through a phone call or the company web site. This information can be found in your policy, or by going directly to the insurance company web site.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON SERIOUS INJURIES AND DEATH CLAIMS
MIOSHA and OSHA Requirements:
In the event of a DEATH, it is required by law that the employer notify MIOSHA at 800-858-0397 and OSHA at 800-321-2642 within eight (8) hours of the inci-dent. As the employer, YOU are responsible to make the report.
OSHA also requires 24-hour notification in the event of any of the following:
Injury resulting in In-patient Hospitalization
Amputation
Loss of eye(s)
If you fail to report any of the above incidents to MIOSHA and OSHA, you could face possible fines that are NOT covered by workers’ compensation insurance or any other type of insurance. Should you have any questions, contact your insurance provider or Mt. Pleasant Agency, Inc. – Central Insurance: 989-772-2977.
