Nowadays, more and more people in Taiwan have emigrated or are emigrating to other places on the world map amidst the trend of globalization. There is no telling now which place is the place of origin and which is a foreign place for people originally living in Taiwan and for those from other countries. Through the imagination of “traveling” and “ocean,” this exhibition creates for viewers imaginative experiences of landing onshore in the south of Taiwan after a seaborne voyage. The works in this exhibition are mostly the contemporary works collected by KMFA. In this exhibition, viewers can be temporarily released from the positions as “spectators” or “local people” and put themselves into the shoes of “foreigners” , appreciating the stories about “here” and “there” , about different people immigrating into or emigrating out of this island. Behind each gift, there are often many emotions, thoughts and best wishes intertwined together. The Chinese title of this exhibition is homophonic with kau kau tînn, an expression from the Taiwanese dialect, which means “intertwined” . This is an ideal expression to represent the delicateness, flexibility of fibers and how easily they entangle. Based on the theme of textile art, this exhibition features installation works and other forms of artworks created by the invited artists using different kinds of natural or manmade fibers and other soft materials. The artists weave into their works their emotions, shared thoughts and best wishes as if they are preparing gifts for viewers. Do you want to know what “fibers” really are? Cotton fibers, paper mulberry bark fibers, silk threads, wool yarns, cowhide fibers, aluminum wires…. Do you know all these materials? Do you know how the artists can use fibers to create special gifts? Come and explore the beauty and fun of fiber art! Do it yourself and create your own special gifts for yourself, family and friends! A view of the exhibition 1.17-3.15 KMFA Gallery B01 Gallery for Citizens: Beauty of Autumn Lotus— Solo Exhibition of Hsieh Yi-e Hsieh Yi-e, a senior ink painting artist in Kaohsiung, is known for her long years of studying poetry, calligraphy and painting. Although she just expanded her artistic repertoire to fine brushwork painting, she recently has developed her command of skills and insights into this newly learned art form. In the Chinese title of this exhibition, the term “Han Dan” is an ancient Chinese expression for lotus, giving a straightforward indication of the exhibition theme. Lotus is one of the most representative topics in the art of Chinese bird-and-flower painting. In traditional Chinese ink painting, the lotus is often portrayed as a symbol of purity out of dirty sludge. In her paintings in this exhibition, Hsieh celebrates the beauty of lotus just like the other artists but, more importantly, she adds more philosophical depth into her paintings by highlighting the beauty of the lotus starting to wither and wilt in autumn. Based on her previous experiences of painting from life, Hsieh used both techniques of abstract and realistic representation to convert what she has seen, learned and thought about lotus into her paintings that cross the boundary between fine brushwork painting and impressionist ink painting. Her paintings give a brand-new reinterpretation and redefinition of what lotus painting is in the art of traditional Chinese ink painting. Painting is an art of style and vision. As described by a Greek poet, poetry is painting that speaks while painting is silent poetry. In the long historical tradition of painting, much emphasis has been placed on the practice of “painting in poetry and poetry in painting” . The exhibition, Art and Poem, Hand in Hand, is a feast of art and culture with poets and artists working hand in hand in a dialogue of aesthetic exploration. Based on poetry for children, this exhibition is intended to inspire children’s creativity, nurture their imagination, and broaden their horizon. There are four sections in this exhibition: in the “Teardrops of Stars” section, there are poems and paintings created by the participating poets, expressing their abstract inner emotions and demonstrating how poets can cross literature and painting, and then bringing words of artistic and abstract imagination to life. In “Poetry as Painting” , viewers can appreciate how poets wield their magic and demonstrate the glamor of patterns in poems through their layering, splitting and enlarging of Chinese words such as “mountain” , “cloud” , “umbrella” and “utility pole”… A view of the exhibition 10.25.2014-1.11 KMFA Galleries 201-203 Collection and Dialogue Taiwan's Contemporary Ink Painting In the art of Chinese ink painting, much importance is always attached to which school the artist attended or which teacher the artist learned from. In this exhibition, works from the Museum’s collection of Chinese ink paintings are selected to reflect the relatively influential teaching styles of ink painting during the post-war period in Taiwan, review the development trends of contemporary ink painting in Taiwan, and explore the present and future of new-generation ink painting artists in the 21st century. As an ink painting master in the early Qing Dynasty proposed, “The brush and ink must be aligned to the times.” The art of ink painting must change its form, content and theme as its most direct response to the unique temporal and spatial context of the times. In such a contemporary context, arts exchange leads to exploration of cultural sources and also gives rise to the related issues worthy of profound thinking; for example, the internal transition of landscape in realty occurring under the intertwining and overlapping landscapes/spectacles of reality, the importance of cultural reference in the context of globalization, the contemporary art searches in the multidimensional reflection, and so on. The exhibition not only provides an insight into the cross- Strait artists’ reflections, thirty in total, on both personal existential experiences and societies they live in, invites viewers to access art from various angles, but also fosters more possible orientations for visual dialogues to take place within the space of art museums. A Voyage to the South – Contemporary Images from the Museum CollectionTaiwan, a beautiful island on the circum-Pacific island arc, attracted missionaries and scholars from the West hundreds of years ago,

later became home to people migrating out of China after WWII, and then received people migrating from countries south of it during its economic take-off. In this exhibition, viewers can be temporarily released from the positions as “spectators” or “local people” and put themselves into the shoes of “foreigners”, appreciating the stories about “here” and “there”, about different people immigrating into or emigrating out of this island.

4.5.2014-5.31 ■CMA Gallery 201 Intertwined— Exploring Textile ArtGifts can bring people a sense of happiness. Behind each gift, there are often many emotions, thoughts and best wishes intertwined together. The Chinese title of this exhibition is homophonic with kau kau tînn, an expression from the Taiwanese dialect, which means “intertwined”. This is an ideal expression to represent the delicateness, flexibility of fibers and how easily

they entangle.

Gallery for Citizens: Beauty of Autumn Lotus—Solo Exhibition of Hsieh Yi-eHsieh Yi-e, a senior ink painting artist in Kaohsiung, is known for her long years of studying poetry, calligraphy and painting.

6.28.2014-5.24 ■CMA Gallery 202 Art & Poem, Hand in HandPoetry is an art of language and hearing. Painting is an art of style and vision. As described by a Greek poet, poetry is painting that speaks while painting is silent poetry. In the long historical tradition of painting, much emphasis has been placed on the practice of “painting in poetry and poetry in painting”. In “Poetry as Painting”, viewers can appreciate how poets wield their magic and demonstrate the glamor of patterns in poems through their layering, splitting and enlarging of Chinese words such as “mountain”, “cloud”, “umbrella” and “utility pole”… A view of the exhibition

Collection and Dialogue — Taiwan's Contemporary Ink PaintingIn the art of Chinese ink painting, much importance is always attached to which school the artist attended or which teacher the artist learned from.

The Other/The Distance Cross-Strait Contemporary Art ExchangeSharing the same cultural root, the art scenes across the Strait, however, have both become pluralistic and multi-perspective in the wake of a transformation brought about by a synthesis of influences (of history, politics, economics, external exchanges, etc). In such

a contemporary context, arts exchange leads to exploration of cultural sources and also gives rise to the related issues worthy of profound thinking; for example, the internal transition of landscape in realty occurring under the intertwining and overlapping landscapes/spectacles of reality, the importance of cultural reference in the context of globalization, the contemporary art searches in the multidimensional reflection, and so on. The exhibition not only provides an insight into the cross-Strait artists’ reflections, thirty in total, on both personal existential experiences and societies they live in, invites viewers to access art from various angles, but also fosters more possible orientations for visual dialogues to take place within the space of art museums.Shen Chao-Liang ; STAGE #27 ; Hsinchu County, Taiwan ; Lightjet C Print ; 118×143cm ; 2008

“2015 Dance Shoe”“Dance Shoe“ was founded in 2004. It will have been held for 12 years by 2015. As domestic modern troupes have sprung up everywhere, the environment for ballet troupes is not conducive. Kaohsiung City Ballet hopes to produce more excellent ballet works and train outstanding choreographers through its "Dance Shoe" ballet creation showcase project – a sterling professional production that can create an optimal environment for ballet in Taiwan. Over the past 12 years, there have been 32 choreographers working for "Dance Shoe," resulting in the creation of 66 works. "Dance Shoe" is currently an influential ballet creation standard in Taiwan.

Beginning on 8/14/2014 ■Special Exhibition RoomKaohsiung Pictorial– Talking about KaohsiungOn July 31, 2014 at 23:56 a series of petrochemical gas explosions took place in Kaohsiung's bustling city center. Kaohsiung Pictorial impels us to ponder: what Kaohsiung Pictorial had exposed were Kaohsiung City's 35 years of official historical records until the development of today's green energy, creative and cultural, tourism, and convention and exhibition industries that accommodate today’s liveable city's demands; what Kaohsiung Pictorial didn't show was the silent sadness of Kaohsiung for being a heavy industry city of Taiwan. Therefore, contemplating what we see and what we don't see in the contents of Kaohsiung Pictorial, who we are, where we were, and where we are going is the profound significance of “Kaohsiung Pictorial – Talking about Kaohsiung” which is organized by the Kaohsiung Museum of History.

Although Paul practices dutifully, he remains unfulfilled until he submits to the interventions of his upstairs neighbor. Suitably named after the novelist, Madame Proust offers Paul a concoction that unlocks repressed memories from his childhood and awakens the most delightful of fantasies.

The Chung Li-ho Literary Memorial Museum

Chung Li-ho who dedicated his whole life to literature is Taiwan's important first-generation writer after the war. His works are representative of Taiwanese literature; they convey human wisdom of life, portray Hakka rural lives, possess social consciousness and embrace conflicting sentiments about Taiwan's colonial history. The land of the Chung Li-ho Literary Memorial Museum, unconditionally provided by his family members, was on the foot of Jian Mountain in Meinong where his former residence was located. He spent the latter part of his life here. People in the literary circle exercised the power of the public and the civic groups jointly built the very first non-governmental Literary Memorial Museum in Taiwan. The Museum was designed to be a typical Taiwanese house to highlight Mr. Chung Li-ho's amiable and approachable personality. The first floor exhibits material related to Chung Li-ho's works including manuscripts, diaries, notes, articles for daily use and studies on Chung Li-ho's works. The second floor is currently hosting a theme exhibition "Writings on People and the Land: Chung Li-ho's Literary World," which introduces Chung Li-ho's works and the history of the Memorial Museum. In 1997 Taiwan literary footpaths were built on both sides of the Museum and Chung Li-ho's memorial statue was erected. This Taiwan's very first literary footpath park is full of the ambience of literary history and the humanities. It welcomes people from all walks of life to visit.
