• TheorchestracommissionedandperformedtheworldpremiereofanewTrumpetConcerto by Dubuque-native Michael Gilbertson with soloist Manny Laureano, the virtuoso Principal Trumpet of the Minnesota Orchestra at the October 2017 Classics concerts. This was just a few short months before Gilbertson was named a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.

• On that same program, retired long-time Concertmaster Caroline Curtis returnedto perform a Vivaldi Concerto for Two Violins, with current Concertmaster Eleanor Bartsch; [photo 1] and the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra joined members of the DSO, side by side, for a stirring performance of Sibelius’ Finlandia.

• Theorchestraperformedsevenfreeeducationconcertsfor3rdand5thgradersinthe region. Young saxophonist Aaron Pulvermacher, winner of the 2017 DSO Youth ConcertoCompetition,performedhissolowiththeDSOatthe3rdgradeconcerts.

• DSO Principal Clarinet Corey Mackey was an incredibly expressive and virtuososoloist in Copland’s Clarinet Concerto at the November 2017 Classics concerts. [photo 2]

• Alsoonthatprogram,theorchestracommissionedandperformedtheworldpremiereofWhereEagles Fly, byDubuque-native composerRockyReuter. Theworkwasinspired by eagles which inhabit our beautiful river city.

• TheannualHolidayCelebrationConcertsandFamilyConcertfeaturedthereturnofsoprano(andDubuque-native)JillianSladefromNewYorkCity.Amongthehighlightsof her performance was Winter Wonderland, in which she alternated between singing andplayingjazzsaxophone,andChildofGod,aworkwrittenbyhermotherwhenJillian was born. The Holiday concerts also featured the Dubuque Chorale, Cadenza, the Dubuque Chorale Children’s Chorus, and dancers from Heartland Ballet.

• Theorchestra’sUltimateRockHitsconcertsinJanuary2018continuedtobehugelysuccessful. Among the highlights was Concertmaster Eleanor Bartsch’s solo in an excerpt from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons which led directly into her opening solo in “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns ‘N’ Roses.

• Eleanor Bartsch was again featured as soloist at the February 2018 concerts, inMozart’sViolinConcertoNo.5.Theorchestrademonstrateditsartisticexcellenceinstirring performances of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.

• InMarch2018, theorchestraperformedaSpringFamilyConcertwithmusic frompopularfilmsandvideogames.Batmanevenmadeanappearanceonstage!

• TheMarch2018Classicsconcertswereexceptionalandunique.Inanticipationofthe performances of West Side Story the following month, the orchestra—joined by singers and actors—performed music inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo andJuliet, as well as having actors recite portions of the play. Sarah Hartmann, who played Juliet, conceived and directed the production. Also featuring actor Daniel Reese and local talent—Megan Gloss, soprano, and Craig Allen, tenor— it was an interdisciplinary exploration that proved thrilling. • Theorchestra’sopeningnightofWestSideStoryhadsomeseriouscompetitionforpatrons when it was announced that Willie Nelson would be performing across the hall in Five Flags Arena. It proved to be a win-win for Dubuque: all performances werevirtuallysold-out!

• WestSideStorycontinuedthetrendoffeaturinglocaltalentandnativeDubuquerswho have gone on to performance careers. The combination of the professional orchestra accompanying professional leads as well as the many students in the cast made for a very rewarding experience for all.

• TheDSOperformeditsfirst-everUltimateCountryHitsattheMississippiMoonBarinMay,2018.LiketheUltimateRockHits,itwasextremelywell-receivedandfeaturedlocal country musicians along with members of the DSO.

• John B. Donavan, winner of Pursuit of the Podium, conducted the DSO in Gershwin’s RhapsodyinBluewithDSOPrincipalPianoJoshuaRussellattheJune2018concertat theArboretum. Also at that concert,DSOPrincipal TrumpetWesSkidgelwasfeatured in music from the film Lincoln, and soprano Cindy Caraway joined theorchestra for a beautiful rendition of the song “Colors of the Wind.” In addition, Dr. F. Hunter Fuerste, director of the American Vintage Orchestra, guest conducted the DSO in two selections, completing a podium exchange with Maestro Intriligator who had conductedonepiecewithDr.Fuerste’sbigbandtheweekbeforeattheArboretum.

• MichellePerrin-BlaircompletedhertenureasConductoroftheDubuqueSymphonyYouth Orchestra and the orchestra announced that HyeYoun Jang would succeed her asConductorinFall,2018.

The 2017-2018 concert season of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra had the over-arching theme of dance. Music from the world of dance appeared on each of the concerts, culminating in three staged performances of West Side Story with the Heartland Ballet in April 2018. The orchestra’s first-ever staged musical, these performances were also in celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s and Jerome Robbins’ 100th birthdays in 2018.

Conductor, Dubuque Youth String EnsemblePrice-Brenner currently plays viola for the DSO, Kipperton Chamber music and is a founding member of the Kipperton String Quartet. He has had compositions performed throughout the midwest. Price-Brenner currently teaches at Jefferson Middle School, is adjunct professor at Loras College and maintains a private violin/viola studio.

April 2018TheDSO’s 59th season culminatedwith a fully-stagedproduction of themusical West Side Story. This was an extraordinary collaboration between the orchestra, Heartland Ballet, and talented performers who have grown up in the Dubuque area and have moved on to professional performing careers.Thisproduction,directedandchoreographedbyMarinaO’Rourke,featured Sarah Ellis as Maria, Matthew Richardson as Tony, and Megan MacLeod as Anita.

Ellis, a Platteville native and former Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra clarinetist and Heartland/Dubuque City Youth Ballet dancer, is currently an actress, vocalist and dancer based in New York. Former DubuquerRichardson graduated from the Eastman School of Music and has built a professional performing career singing with symphonies, opera and theater companiesintheUSandabroad.MacLeod,aregularguestperformeratthe DSO’s annual Holiday Pops concert, is currently principal instructor and Academy of Ballet artist-in-residence.

There was an added third performance for this production, with all three showsperformingtonearlyfull-houseaudiences!

Actors and vocalists joined the orchestra on stage for “Star Crossed Lovers” inMarch.Thisfusionoforchestralmusic,operaandShakespeareantheaterbroke new DSO ground, surprised, wow-ed and moved the audience tostanding ovations. Actors Daniel Reece and Sarah Hartmann portrayed the spokenRomeoandJulietroles,andsingersMeganGlossandCraigAllenas guest opera soloists. The two sets of Romeo and Juliet passed the roles backandforthinaseamlessstoryline.

DuBuquE SYMPHOnY YOuTH EnSEMBLES An educational component of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, the Dubuque Symphony Youth Ensembles (DSYE) is the leading orchestral training program for youth in the tri-state area. The DSYE’s mission is to supplement and enhance music education in the schools, and to promote the highest standards of musical excellence via weekly rehearsals andregularly scheduled public performances. During the 2017-18 season,the DSYE expanded to include a brand new ensemble: the Youth Wind Ensemble,whichisthefirstensembleintheDSYEprogramthatisgearedspecificallytowardwind,brass,andpercussionplayers.TheDSYEprogramnow includes four training ensembles:

▶ String Ensemble: an introductory honors ensemble for young string players with at least one year of ensemble experience or equivalent ability.

▶ Wind Ensemble: an honors ensemble for wind, brass, and percussion players. Students have at least 2 years of ensemble experience, and perform at a high school or advanced middle school level.

▶ Philharmonia: a full-orchestra honors ensemble for string players. Members generally have several years of ensemble experience.

▶ Youth orchestra: the premier honors orchestra of the DSYE. Students typically have four or more years of ensemble experience and play individually at a pre-college or college level.

The DSO’s Education programs had a very full and exciting year in 2017-2018! We have continued to expand our programs, enabling us to reach a greater number of young people throughout the tri-state area.

GenS,asymphonysocialgroup,helditsfirstgatheringOctoberof2017at 7 Hills Brewery, featuring Principal Clarinetist Corey Mackey and MaestroWilliam Intriligator. The purpose of gen S is to give the community an opportunity to meet DSO musicians in a relaxed, casual atmosphere, connect with people who share a mutual appreciation for music and the arts and learn more about our orchestra and musicians. Additional events were held in November at Monk’sKaffee,featuringConcertmasterEleanorBartsch;andMarchatRiverLightsBookstorewith“StarCrossedLovers”vocalist,MeganGloss.

coMMUnity iMpact edUcationaL proGraMsThe 2017-2018 season saw theaddition of a new youth ensemble, conducted by Dr. Glenn Pohland. This is thefirstensembleintheDSYEprogram that is geared specificallytoward wind, brass, and percussion players.

ADOPT A MuSICIAnAdopt a Musician aims to enhance the music education of Dubuque-area students by appointing DSO musicians to serve as ambassadors and teaching artists in theschools.Musiciansare“adopted”bya4thgradeclassroomandvisitthemfivetimes during the school year. They demonstrate their musical instruments, engage students in creative classroom activities and discussion, and encourage students to play a musical instrument. It is a program that has proven very effective and rewardingforthestudents,teachers,andmusicians!Duringthe2017-2018seasontheAdoptaMusicianprogramwasable toexpand intoPlatteville,WI for thefirsttime, establishing the program in Westview Elementary School.

ARTS TREkTheDSO’sArtsTrekconcertsholdaveryspecialplaceinthemusiceducationofouryoungstudents.3rdGradeArtsTrekintroducesstudentstoasymphonyorchestra,andtheinstrumentsandinstrumentfamiliesthatmakeupanorchestra.Formoststudents,thisistheirfirstexperiencewithlivesymphonicmusic.5thGradeArtsTrekconcertsaredesignedtosupplementfifthgraders’studyofAmericanhistory.Ourhopeisthatstudentswillbeinspiredtomakemusicthemselves,choosingtosingina choir or play an instrument when the opportunity is presented.

SuMMER STRIng CAMP AnD CHAMBER MuSIC CAMP

Duringthesummerof2018wereachedanexcitingmilestonewithourSummerStringCamp–5yearsin operation! Guest Artist and Conductor DiegoPiedraCarvajal returned for the fifth time to leadstudents through seven days of immersive activities designed to broaden their musical experience and abilities. Additional faculty members included Carol Carlson (DSO violinist), Christina Mixemong (DSO Principal Violist), Christina Gentzsch (cellist), and Stephen Reichelt (DSO bassist). Thecampweek culminated in a30-minuteperformance for thousandsof concert-goers at the DSO’s annual outdoor Summer Melodies concert.

The Summer Camp program also continued with the Chamber Music Camp, completing its fourth year. Geared toward high school students, this camp provided students with the opportunity to rehearse and perform in small ensembles at a very high level. After an intenseweekof rehearsals,coachings,andprivate lessons,studentspresenteda public recital and also joined String Camp students for their performance at the Summer Melodies concert.

During their existence, the String Camp and Chamber Music Camp have functioned as daycamps;studentsarriveinthemorning,anddepartintheearlyevening.In2018,theDSO’sdreamofexpanding thesecamps intoovernightexperienceswasfinallyrealized!Studentsnowhavetheoptionofparticipatinginthecampaseitheradaytimestudent,oraresidentstudent.ResidentstudentsarehousedintheClarkeUniversitydorms, eat meals in the dining hall, and get to enjoy a wide range of evening activities. This change has brought a whole new dimension to the camp experience, and we are excitedtocontinuethisnewventurein2019!

COnCERTO COMPETITIOnThe DSO Concerto Competition offers motivated young students the opportunity todeveloptheirsolomusicperformanceskills,andaddtotheirmusicperformanceportfolio. Some of the past winners have been invited to perform as soloists with theDSOonArtsTrekconcertswhileothershavebeen featuredwith theDubuqueSymphonyYouthOrchestra.Eightstudentsenteredthe2017-2018competition.

dsoLThe Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League (DSOL) continued their longstanding support of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra with a $15,000contributiontotheDSOAnnualFund.

In addition, the DSOL supported educational and outreach programs in thecommunity. TheLeagueassistedwith the3rdand5thgradeArtsTrek concerts; financially supported the Adopt-A-Musician program in12 schools; sponsored the Concerto Competition by providing the prize money; and continued the long tradition of supporting the Dubuque SymphonyYouthEnsembleswithfinancialassistanceforthepurchaseofsheetmusic,financialaidfortuition,instrumentrental,andtuxedorental.

The DSOL also sponsored the Sound Bites lunches/lectures on the Friday prior to the classical concerts and the Musical Musings prior to the Sunday concerts.

The DSOL provided a luncheon for the DSO during an ARTS TrekperformanceandadinnerforthefinaldayoftheSummerStringCampat the Arboretum.

The Senior Classics financially covered six performances by DSOmusicians to entertain residents and their families in local nursing homes and assisted living settings.

Together with the Adopt-A-Musician and the Senior Classics programs, the DSOL provided additional income for the participating DSO musicians duringtheirconcertweekendsinDubuque.

The2017-2018fundraisingeventswhichallowedtheLeaguetocontinuethese programs included increasing annual League memberships, Playing for the Symphony Bridge Party, the Mad Hatter Tea, and the Geranium Plus sale.

For2017-2018,thetotalfinancialcontributiontotheDSOandtheDSOprojects was $33,574. To date DSOL financial contributions totaled$873,574.

The DSOL provided 3,917 volunteer hours while providing orchestraluncheons, guest artists’ welcome baskets, greeting at the DSOconcerts,andworkingtheeventspreviouslycited.OurvolunteerhoursovertheLeague’s51yearstotals 212,917 hours.

From February 1 to April 9, fourlocal celebrities raised money on behalf of the DSO. This year’s Pursuit of the Podium contestants included John B. Donovan, Eric Lucy, Maria J. McDonald and Pat Zelinskas Piekenbrock. Togetherthe group raised over $37,000 forthe symphony - an all time fundraising record for POP!

Donovan raised the most funds and, as a result, hadthehonoroftakingMaestroIntriligator’splaceon the podium to conduct one selection at the free Summer Melodies concert held at the Dubuque ArboretumonJune24,2018.

Funds generated from Pursuit of the Podium support the DSO’s overall mission, which is to engage the tri-state community and enrich its quality of life through live musical performances and educational programs.
