Dr. Madeline Hunter▪ Dr. Madeline Hunter is most famous for her

view on how lessons should be planned and implemented in the classroom.  She developed eight elements that a lesson plan should contain in order to enhance student learning.  The eight elements are;

2. PURPOSE

3. INPUT

4. MODELING

5. GUIDED PRACTICE

6. CHECK FOR

UNDERSTANDING

7. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

8. CLOSURE

1. Anticipatory Set (Mental Set)

▪ A short activity or prompt that focuses the students’ attention before the actual lesson begins. Used when students enter the room or in a transition.

▪ Also called “Catch a Sense.”

2. Objective and Purpose

▪ Students will generally spend more time and effort, and consequently increase their learning if they know at the beginning of the lesson what they are going to learn and why it is important to them.

3.INPUT

▪ The “stuff” they need to know to be successful. (vocabulary, skills, concepts

▪ Keep it brief. (KISS strategy) Keeping it Short and Simple

4. MODELLING▪ (How will you show/demonstrate

the skill or competence so the student will also be able to do

it?)

▪ Demonstration and/or example of the acceptable finished

product or process

5. GUIDED PRACTICE ▪ The students practice the new

learning under direct teacher supervision.

▪ The teacher leads the students through the steps necessary to perform the skill using a trimodal approach: hear/see/so.

6. Checking for Understanding ▪ The students practice the new

learning under direct teacher supervision.

▪ The teacher leads the students through the steps necessary to perform the skill using a trimodal approach: hear/see/so.

7. Independent Practice▪ When the teacher is sure the

students understand the new material, they assign independent practice.

▪ The teacher releases students to practice on their own based on learning that has occurred during the previous steps

8. ClosureAt the end of each lesson, the teacher reviews or wraps up the lesson by posing a question for the class: “Tell me or show me what you have learned today.”
