INTRODUCTION
Dear colleague,
As another academic year begins we look forward to developing new initiatives within the undergraduate curriculum.
General practice is an ever-changing world, facing new challenges in providing the best possible healthcare for patients:
it is important that today’s medical students are aware of the different aspects of care provision that can affect patients’
journeys through illness. It is only with the ongoing support, in both teaching and research activities, of colleagues all
across the province that we can hope to provide opportunities for our students to gain experiences and learning that will
equip them to become the best possible doctors. We very much appreciate your work and collaboration.
Over the last three years we have had the privilege of working with Dr Bob Nairn in increasing the involvement of
practices in the North-West and we wish to thank him for his innovative teaching which has greatly enhanced students’
perspectives of working outside of Belfast! We wish him well in his retirement and look forward to building on his work.
We are delighted to congratulate Dr Paddy McEvoy on his recent successful launch of another book ‘Chronic Disease
Management – a new paradigm for care’. Most of the work for this was done during his tenure as an honorary lecturer
at QUB. His expertise in medical education and years of experience in caring for patients make this a unique resource
which provides an overview of chronic illness care, with insightful explanations of policy and practice.
Drs Christine Rea, Helen Reid and Michael Aicken have graduated with MPhil and Brian McCaw with PhD; we
congratulate them, as well as Clare Thomson, who was awarded, at the July graduation ceremony, the QUB prize for
her work in supporting elearning and Gerry Gormley, who was awarded the Dean’s prize for excellence in educational
research. Last year we were delighted to see a new student-nominated Robin Harland Prize for Excellence in Teaching
awarded by Dr John O’Kelly, Chair of RCGP (Northern Ireland) to Dr Patrick Sharkey of Carryduff Surgery, at the RCGP
Awards ceremony in May, and at the same event Dr Neil Heron received his award of an Investec Travel bursary.
We welcome Dr Claire Neill as a new research registrar, to undertake research within a MPhil whilst completing her GP
training. Dr Finbar McGrady is warmly welcomed back into our teaching staff. He will be responsible for oversight of
general practice’s contributions to Final year teaching. Congratulations are also due to both Helen Reid and Neil Heron
on achieving awards for funding of PhD projects. We wish them well for their continued work, both clinical and research.
The NI Clinical Research Network maintains its strong contribution to NHS research in primary care, under the careful
guidance of Claire Leathem, ably assisted by Marina Maxwell and Donna Hanlon. The quality of their work was again
recognised at the prestigious UK General Practice Awards ceremony in London in December when they were the
winners of the ‘Best Clinical Team of the Year (Cardiovascular)’ award.
As ever we are indebted to Cathleen Agnew, for her skillful management in coordinating all our activities. We also wish
to thank all who contribute to our teaching and research activities which are only possible with your enthusiastic support
from the ‘front line’ of general practice. We look forward to another year’s work together.
With very best wishes,
Professor Margaret Cupples
