Introducing Our Leadership

Dear Friends:

“Take Me to Vassar.” For the better part of the year, people across the region have seen the billboards presenting this simple but important message. Implicit in that message is an across-the-board commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to every single patient who turns to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for help.

Many patients across the region felt the impact of that commitment in 2015. Consider some of the numbers:

• 21,710 patients were discharged, including 2,165 newborns.

• 302 babies were treated in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

• 345 heart surgeries were performed by our cardiothoracic surgery team.

• 4,830 patients underwent cardiac catheterization, angioplasty or electrophysiology procedures.

• 49,117 radiation treatments were provided to cancer patients.

• 69,350 patients were cared for in our Emergency Room.

Another sign of that commitment is seen in the new clinical services Vassar Brothers Medical Center introduced to the community in 2015, starting early in the year with the area’s first state-of-the-art Neurointerventional Surgery program. This life-saving, life-changing service allows the neurointerventional surgeon to insert a catheter into the brain in order to remove a stroke-causing clot. This vital new clinical program and the exceptional team behind it have already made a significant difference in the lives of many patients in our region.

Equally important was the opening last summer of the Dyson Breast Center. Equipped with the latest imaging technology, including state-of-the-art 3-D mammography units for enhanced detection of breast anomalies, this spacious, spa-like new Center offers patients ready-access to an exceptional staff led by compassionate, fellowship-trained breast surgeons. In addition, the Medical Center is expanding its cancer program by recruiting specialists who are dedicated to disease-specific treatment.

Going hand-in-hand with its healthcare mission is the Medical Center’s attentiveness to sound financial performance — an accomplishment that allows it to continue investing in the people, services and healthcare technology needed to provide our patients with topflight care.

The commitment to investment will reach a new high later this year when the Medical Center breaks ground on a 696,440-square-foot patient pavilion. This spacious new building, featuring an expansive Emergency/Level II Trauma Center, a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, cutting-edge operating suites, and 294 private patient rooms, will transform how people in our region experience hospital care. Stay tuned in the coming months for more information about this extraordinary project, which brings both health and economic benefits to the area.

With this progress in mind, we are pleased to present this year’s Report on Giving. In it, we highlight some of the Medical Center’s recent accomplishments as seen through the eyes of our patients. Dear Friends:

I am a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a teacher. Cancer doesn’t care.

It was the second lump that made me get my mammogram. I was a year behind schedule — not because I was avoiding the test, but because a back injury had kept me from getting to the appointment. I had every intention of rescheduling but life just kept getting in the way. My husband and I have two young sons, full-time jobs and a hectic schedule that allowed time to slip past me. Suddenly, it was a year later and there was another lump.

I wasted no time calling the Dyson Breast Center at Vassar Brothers Medical Center to make my appointment — but the year’s delay cost me dearly. The lumps turned out to be Stage II B Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. What? I am young and healthy — and a Physical Education teacher. I maintain a healthy diet and I am very active. How could this be happening to me?

Thankfully, everything I needed was available right at the Dyson Breast Center. Dr. Angela Keleher and her expert team guided me through the biopsy and the mastectomy. The very talented Dr. Sepulveda performed implant surgery, boosting my spirits and my body image. My radiation and chemotherapy were managed by expert staff who greeted me with warmth and

good humor. And providing the cheerleading and support outside the Medical Center were my wonderful family and friends.

Now, a year later, I am still on chemotherapy but I’m feeling great. From the get-go, I was determined not to let cancer run my life. It slowed me down a bit, but I’m back, stronger than ever!

My message to women across the region is this: Do NOT put off your annual mammogram. Routine exams can save your life — and, so can the great people at the Dyson Breast Center. It has the experts, technology and facilities we need to diagnose and treat breast cancer. Thank you, Vassar Brothers Medical Center!

We thank the many friends of Vassar Brothers Medical Center for giving toys, books and handmade knitted caps and blankets to patients in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, our Mother-Baby Unit, our Pediatric Unit, and our Dyson Center for Cancer Care. Thank you, one and all!

It was supposed to be a romantic getaway for Jeff and Andi. Friends gave them a gift certificate for a weekend stay at a lovely bed and breakfast in Rhinebeck, an easy trip from their home in Fairfield, Connecticut — and so began quite a memorable adventure.

After a long walk around the Village of Rhinebeck and a leisurely dinner at a local restaurant, Jeff and Andi returned to the B&B. They hadn’t been there long when Jeff noticed that Andi, who had been working on her iPad, seemed dazed. His concern quickly escalated to alarm when she wasn’t able to respond to his questions.

Jeff called 911. Within minutes, the paramedics arrived, quickly assessing Andi’s condition and determining that she was having a stroke.

Jeff relays the story that Andi does not fully recall:

Our first stop was at the emergency room at Northern Dutchess Hospital, where a clot-busting drug was administered to stop the stroke before transporting Andi to Vassar Brothers Medical Center. By now it was 9:30 p.m. Fortunately, the paramedics had remained in the emergency room, knowing that Andi’s next step would be the trip to Poughkeepsie.

As the rescue squad sped away, I followed in my car, scared beyond words about what was happening to Andi. My fear went even deeper when I arrived in the emergency room at Vassar only to be told that she had already been taken to the neurointerventional suite, where the doctor would attempt to remove the clot.

I was directed to the waiting area outside the suite … and there I sat, upset but never quite alone. Two members of the hospital staff — a very personable security guard and a friendly, caring cardiac nurse — periodically checked in on me, assuring me that the doctor taking care of Andi would know exactly where to find me. That’s when it dawned on me: How lucky were we that our weekend destination allowed access to the state-of-the-art care Andi needed?

Finally, at about 1:30 in the morning, I was greeted by an angel. She smiled broadly at me, told me Andi’s arteries were “beautiful,” and introduced herself as Dr. Alison Nohara. She explained that an unusual tear in Andi’s carotid artery had caused the clot. By inserting a catheter into Andi’s brain, Dr. Nohara was able to remove every bit of the clot and was optimistic that Andi would make a full recovery. In spite of the

hour, Dr. Nohara was energized and upbeat. I now refer to her as our “Angel Doctor” and I will never forget what she did for Andi and the kindness she showed me at the end of that very long night.

Andi was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where we were again surrounded by the most caring professionals. I say “we” because the nurses on the unit attended not only to Andi, but also to me and our children, who, by then, had joined me at the hospital. During those two days and two nights we spent in the ICU, I felt complete confidence and trust in the care Andi received.

Andi recovered quite quickly, becoming alert almost as soon as she awoke. Initially, she would mix up her words — a post-event condition that cleared up with the help of a speech therapist. Not quite three days later, Andi and Jeff returned to Fairfield — and, only FOUR weeks after her stroke, Andi returned part-time to her psychotherapy practice. Today, four months later, Andi and Jeff are back to their normal routines — but with a huge appreciation for good health and for the many caring people who helped Andi recover from her unexpected stroke.

It was the last morning in July 2014 and I was looking forward to my morning swim. I had joined the Masters Swim Team and enjoyed the challenging workout we set for ourselves at each practice. About 45-minutes into our swim, we started a set of strenuous butterfly laps. Three or four strokes later, I felt an excruciating pain in my chest — like someone had punched me hard just below my throat.

I stopped mid-stroke and instantly felt better. Still, I was very concerned. Two years earlier, I had undergone a cardiac procedure, in which stents were used to open up two vessels in my heart. Up until this moment, I had been feeling great — maintaining my law practice, travelling with my wife, Carol, and, of course, swimming. To be safe, I left the pool, showered, ate a quick breakfast, and then visited my cardiologist, Dr. Gerber, at The Heart Center.

It didn’t take long for Dr. Gerber to assess the situation. He sedated me and then arranged for the Guinness-Book-of-World-Records’ shortest ambulance ride to the Emergency Room at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

There, a flurry of tests confirmed Dr. Gerber’s suspicion: The pain in my chest was caused by an aortic rupture — a life-threatening condition in which the inner layer of the aorta, the largest blood vessel branching off the heart, tears.

Fortunately, I was in the right place. The cardiothoracic team at Vassar Brothers jumped into action. My surgeon, Dr. Peter Zakow, explained that he was going to patch the tear and that I would soon be as good as new.

He was right. Eight days after the surgery, I returned home, and a week later, I was back at work on a part-time basis.

I credit my full recovery to the excellent care I received every step of the way — from the Emergency Room, cardiothoracic and nursing teams at Vassar Brothers, to my wife and children, who were my first-class caregivers at home.

Today, I am as active as ever — at work, at the gym, and in the pool!
