Report on Use Cases
«LOCAH Project: Map Based Data Visualisation »
« Photo museum case »
LLD XG F2F meeting – Pittsburgh – 2010/10/23
Archival material specifics
• Unique & scattered material, high quantities, very diverse types of content & carriers
• Wide public (from researchers to general public – genealogists)
• Hierachical descriptions + importance of contextual information
• Legacy data issue : descriptions are a combination of structured data and semi-structured data, with sometimes consistency / quality issues
• Lack of standards for description of unique / specific material
Linked data added value
• Provide a « hub » to make it easier to locate relevant material that is scattered across several institutions
• Improve browsing experience by better linking items and allowing to discover related material
• Linking to external datasource, incl. general interest content (e.g. DBpedia) & library content (documents, authorities)
Technology pieces
• Technologies– persistent URIs for the
key entities– web pages in XHTML
containing RDFa – Linked Data RDF/XML – SPARQL endpoints
• Vocabularies– DC Terms – Bibliontology (BIBO) – FOAF – SKOS – RDFS – FRBR– & wip on
• ISAD(G)• MODS
« community » issues
• A lack of examples within particular domain (archives)
• A lack of helpful information about how to create a data model
• A certain level of expertise is important, to model data and output RDF
Report on Use Case
«Recollection »
LLD XG F2F meeting – Pittsburgh – 2010/10/23
• Context = NDIIPP (digital preservation)– High quantities of heterogeneous material,
scattered among institutions
• Goal = enable the discovery of resources– Target = curators, librarians
• Application of Linked Data– Give URIs to every resource– Expose as Linked Data– Open source components– Enrichment with external datasets
