INTRODUCTION Epo-ChemTM RA 500M is suitable for a wide range of applications, including tanks, vessel linings and deck coatings. Epo-ChemTM RA 500M is a solvent-free, wet-tolerant and highly chemical resistant epoxy single/top coat. The glassflake systems have been utilised over the last 30 years as tank lining in the most aggressive environments because they offer total barrier against moisture and corrosive ions. These are typically applied as a 1-coat system or as a top-coat on the primers with DFT of 200-300 microns. Minimum surface preparation standard required: SA2.0, WJ-2, ST3.

MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS – It has been designed to work in damp, humid and poorly ventilated areas that are typically

found in ballast tanks. – Used as a stripe coat to repair and protect high corrosion areas, i.e. welds, sharp edges and joins.

Adhesion test results on wet substrates far exceed industry norms attaining over 1300psi before cohesive failure.

– Wet-tolerant – Can be applied on wet and soaking surfaces, no requirement for any de-humidification equipment. – RA 500M is 100% solid (solvent-free), no requirement for any ventilation equipment. – Reduces the risk of MIC (Microbiological Induced Corrosion) and SRB (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria)

as it does not contain the nutrients contained in solvent-based coatings. – Excellent chemical resistance. – Coating compatible with virtually all coal tar epoxy or other traditional ballast tank coatings. – Compatible with all shop primers. – Unlimited over-coating intervals. – Fast turn-around, can be put back into service almost immediately (as soon as touch dry,

6-12 hours) the system is capable of ‘continuing’ to cure underwater. – Glassflake technology ensures superb corrosion resistance and a long service life. – Ideal for poorly and hand prepared surfaces - reducing the downtime and back-in service time. – Apply in any environmental condition, no humidity restrictions. – Zero VOC; no fire hazard or odour. – Hot-work, e.g. welding, cutting and grinding can be carried out without interruption. – No storage hazard. – Preparation and application works can be carried out by ships’ crew, riding crew, alongside quay-side or in dry-dock. – User friendly.

CASE STUDIES

CASE STUDY 1 – MV Bran Sands

Background:

The vessel MV Bran Sands is operated by Stephenson Clarke Shipping on behalf of Northumbria Water as an effluent carrier. The coal-tar epoxy coating applied previously to deck heads (2500m²) in effluent ballast tanks was failing and needed to be replaced. Epo-chem™ RA 500M two pack solvent-free, moisture tolerant, epoxy glassflake material offered a one coat solution that would provide a guaranteed minimum 5 year maintenance-free service with life expectancy in excess of 20 years. Specification: The following specification was utilised: • Wash down tank to remove surface contamination. • Grit blast to BS 7079, SA2½. • Clean out. • Stripe coat edges and welds. • Apply one coat Epo-chem™ RA 500M solvent-free, glassflake epoxy at 250µm by airless spray. • Inspect tank and touch up as required. Application: The duration of the contract from start to completion was 9 days. The product was applied in a single coat to the required thickness, unlike multi-coat paint system with additional problems of solvent entrapment, inter-coating adhesion, problems, contamination etc. Benefits: • The application was estimated to have saved at least 8 days of downtime, increased access and reduced manpower. • Reduced docking times compared to solvent-based coatings. • The product can cure underwater and therefore when there is a shortage of time, it can be put back into service within a short space of time without any detrimental effect to the coating. • Hot-work in adjacent tanks continued without disruption. • Reduced number of stripe coats as product has a very good edge coverage. • Reduced ventilation requirements to simple air movers rather than extraction units. • No requirement to dehumidify the tanks as product is moisture tolerant. • Improved HS&E impact to client and applicator. • Increase flexibility for painting. No need to have a specific "window" to fit around other trades.

CASE STUDY 6 – Stephenson Clarke Shipping (Dallington Vessel)

Overview Stephenson Clarke manage and own bulk carriers which require fast re-fitting programs in dock to meet with the charterers’ requirements of cargo carriage.

Challenge Historically, Stephenson Clarke have utilised solvent-based systems for their ballast tanks and in particular their cargo holds. The preparation of dry-blasting to achieve a substrate for the application of solvent-based paints is both tedious and expensive and leads to slow return to service. The company have been looking for an alternative system to fast forward their re-fit programs and have turned to Chemco International for a solution.

Solution Chemco International 500 Series, solvent-free moisture tolerant technology and fast drying/curing, to be used on the cargo holds on the ‘Dallington’. The preparation was high-pressure wash followed by one coat of Chemco International Epo-chem™ RA 500M FDA approved for carriage of foodstuffs. The differential in cost and time was considerable and the vessel returned to service in record time. In conjunction with the hold coating, the ballast tanks were also high-pressure wash cleaned and coated with Chemco International Epo-chem™ RA 500M @ 250µ DFT, a total area of over 10,000m² was coated and following application was ready for ballast in 24 hours and cargo carriage after 3 days. Outcome Due to the heavy docking fees and the extra time required in dock to fulfil the same project using solvent-based materials, the differential in time and cost utilising Chemco International 500 series was significant. During these operations the owners and classification society also inspected the forepeak and aft peak tanks which had been high-pressure wash cleaned and coated with Chemco International Epo-chem™ RA 500M almost 5 years ago and the Superintendent in charge stated that these tanks were in excellent condition and this was endorsed by the Lloyds Register representative.

Benefits • Client satisfaction. • More work content completed due to Chemco International 500 series technology. • Reduced Health & Safety and Fire Precaution issues. • Extremely cost effective. • One coat protects the steel substrate in excess of 10 years, even in wet conditions. • All works carried out by high-pressure wash before application rather than costly dry blasting procedures. • No ventilation or de-humidification equipment required.
