Annual Report 2013

Year 2013 has been a special year for Tecnova and for the Agro-Industrial sector which is at the heart of it. One of the most relevant milestones has been the official inauguration of new premises for Tecnova headquarters – a building that we own and which hosts technological and research spaces at the ser-vice of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, the Post-harvesting and the Packaging sectors. It was built thanks to both the funding and the support of the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, to-gether with the Department for Innovation of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The building is located at a key place such as PITA – the Technolog-ical Park of Almería.

After a lot of effort and hard-work, something that used to be a project is now a reality, a reality to be able to provide quick solutions to the sector, thus becoming a meeting point for their companies. This is thanks to Tecnova’s pilot plants and labs, adapted to current needs in the field of the Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors, as well as to horticultural production technology - for offering real-life and practical solution to organizations in the Agro-In-dustrial sector. In this sense, and regarding infrastructures, we could also mention our 2nd site, known as Experimental Centre, and located near the village of Viator. But it will be dealt more in detail in the Report of 2014, since it was inaugurated this very year, in April 2014. With these two sites and the guarantee of 12 years

of experience, Tecnova has managed to create a business model adapted to the needs of companies, oriented to them, and focused on obtaining resour-ces. Actually, we have managed to reach a turnover of 2 million Euros in 2013, with a 71% of private fun-ding and a 29% of public one. It is because of this that I would like to stress the va-lue of the work carried out with the entities that are part of the Agro-Industrial cluster, the Marketing, Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors. In this way, we have showed our value for certainly strengthen agriculture and food & nutritional safety: working in new lines of interest for the sector, working adapting ourselves to sectors need in advance, and setting quality and customer satisfaction (an increasingly demanding one each day) as our main objectives. With this idea in mind, in June this year, we achie-ved one of our goals – to be considered as Support Centre for Technological Innovation at national level by the Spanish Ministry for Economy & Competi-tiveness. This means setting Tecnova as a model Technological Centre for organisations all around Spain when it comes to research. In relation to this, collaboration agreements and contracts have been signed with public and private bodies in order to promote joint actions for the de-velopment of the sector, with a clear aim – to get our efforts together to be side by side with compa-nies to boost R&D-i, or to help the sector in adap-

ting itself to new market needs. This can be done by means of internationalisation and inter-business cooperation, thus making it possible to create jobs and also richness for the province of Almería. We must not forget that all of this would not have been possible if it was not for the whole team wor-king at the Foundation. In this sense, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff of Tec-nova Foundation, as well as to the governing team (Managing Board, Governing Council and Board members). All of them have given added value to Tecnova, something which no doubt has contribu-ted to enriching and highlighting us as a quality or-ganisation which is at the service of companies.

Moreover, I would also like to thank the companies which have joined Tecnova in 2013, among which we could mention: Agrofresh Fruits and Vegetables Exportation, Bio Sabor SAT, Caparrós Nature S.L., Certis Europe S.C.A., Hortimax Growing Solutions S.L., Sertfruit S.A., Azud System S.A. & Única Group S.C.A.Taking this as a starting point, I would like to con-clude my letter bearing in mind an important cha-llenge for the future, which is to continue working for the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, and for the Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors, with the same drive, effort and positivism that we have ma-naged to keep intact during previous years.

Finally, I am convinced that perseverance and in-novation are the keys to help to improve the future and so achieve increased productivity and compe-titiveness. In this sense, I would like to encourage all companies in the sector to be part of a com-mon challenge (Tecnova’s and our own) – to achie-ve the involvement and unity that are necessary to strengthen even further our sector, cooperating to-gether and setting it as one of the most relevant nation-wide.

Mr. Emilio Martínez AguadoPresident of Tecnova

is considered a milestone for the Foundation and for the companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Ag-riculture. There was also funding from the General Secretariat of Universities, Research and Technology of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The lat-ter was channelled through the project for provision of equipment to the Technological Centre of the AIA and has made it possible to build a commercial and technological showcase on greenhouse crops man-agement.

This project is aimed at improving, by means of re-search, intensive agriculture in greenhouses. This is to be done via innovation in farm energy management, design and planning of production & facilities, input management and valorisation of intensive farming

waste.

The Town Hall of Viator (province of Almería) has lent us 12h of land for research purposes. Thanks to this, and in cooperation with companies within the sec-tor, work was under way for building an experimental centre in which to carry out research for the project, as well as providing a world-wide showcase for hor-ticultural technology from Almería.

During 2013, Tecnova Foundation finished imple-menting and evaluating the technological develop-ment of this project in the centre.

The greenhouse called ‘SOLNOVA’ incorporates pho-tovoltaic panels on the east side of its surface. Also, on the south-east of the same plot of land, there is an aero-generator providing enough energy, together with the panels, to meet the consumption demands generated by the automatic devices providing energy

to the said greenhouse. Its design offers improve-ments in solar capture, increasing productivity, as well as the possibility of interplanting cultivation. Also, a machine separating raffia from greenhouse waste has been developed for this project. The said technolo-gy has the purpose of minimising waste coming from

Direct Missions

Technological cooperation missions. AGROTEC – RETCETEC projects.

Throughout 2013, four big actions for technolo-gical transfer were carried out, framed within the implementation of the project “Agro-industrial improvement via Technological Transfer between Almería & the North-Eastern region of Morocco”, known as AGROTEC. This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, as part of the POCTEFEX cross-border cooperation programme.

The missions organized in Morocco had the purpose of promoting the project, as well as the actions for raising awareness, promotion, communication and project results transfer framed within the project. The

main idea is to promote long-term commercial rela-tions between companies in both countries.

The first action for raising awareness was organized as a commercial mission in the region of Berkane,

with the participation of Tecnova, ‘Argar’ Southern Plants, ‘Biorizon’, ‘Novedades Agrícolas’, ‘S&B Indus-trias Minerals’, all of them part of the Auxiliary Indus-try for Agriculture of Almería.

80

Annual Report 2013

The purpose of the mission was to carry out technical and commercial missions aimed at private investors, entrepreneurs from the Moroccan Auxiliary Industry, field technicians and students, etc. In these sessions, the experience and technology of the participating companies from Almería was presented. Also, seve-

ral bilateral meetings took place with organizations and business people of the area. By means of this mission, the companies were able to learn about the North-Eastern region of Morocco and the business and investment possibilities in that area.

During this mission, there were also sessions for lear-ning about the AGROTEC project and visits with bu-sinessmen to the greenhouse in order to explain and promote the technology exposed there as part of the AGROTEC project. These had the active participation of Tecnova, business people from Tecnova & the Mo-roccan partner in the project.

10. Internationalization

Annual Report 2013

The second commercial mission was in April, at the same time as the SIAM Fair, of great nation-wide re-levance. In this Fair, a commercial mission was pro-duced with a joint stand gathering together Founda-tion companies (among them - ‘Biorizon’, ‘Carretillas Amate’, ‘Riegos y Tecnología’ & NGS), together with the Moroccan partner, UAL & partnership members of the AGROTEC project. The objective of Tecnova was to spread information on the AGROTEC & RETCETEC projects. Both of these are managing projects of in-

terest between both countries by means of sessions for raising awareness, or bilateral meetings between companies of the sector, among other.

The third action took place in June, for assessing the follow-up of cultivation in a pilot greenhouse insta-lled in Berkane, as part of the AGROTEC project. To promote the technological transfer of knowledge be-tween companies of the Auxiliary Industry, an action

82

Annual Report 2013

was organized with the participation of companies from the Foundation. This was attended, apart from Tecnova, by ‘Biorizon’, ‘Carretillas Amate’, as well as by representatives of the Moroccan partner partici-pating in the AGROTEC project, plus other compa-nies from this country. Finally, technical sessions in greenhouses took place, as well as bilateral meetings and active discussions on intensive agriculture framed within the said project.

The fourth relevant action within the AGROTEC pro-ject was a commercial mission taking place in Decem-ber, at the same time as the Sifer Fair held in Agadir. The reason for attending to this international fair of great importance for the Auxiliary Industry sector was mostly to be able to organize bilateral sessions and meetings with a view to boost relations between Mo-roccan and Spanish companies, thus spreading the results of the AGROTEC & RETCETEC projects that Tecnova has been implementing throughout 2013.

As a strategic fair of interest in Morocco, it is im-portant to value the degree of promotion and trans-fer allowed by the said Fair. This is why the perfect place was selected for organizing sessions for raising awareness or for transferring the final results of both projects, co-funded by the European Regional Deve-lopment Fund & as part of the cross-border coopera-tion programme POCTEFEX. Because of this, Tecnova had its own stand, in which all necessary actions and meetings were organized.

Inverse Missions

Technological cooperation missions. AGROTEC – RETCETEC projects.

Within the technological transfer actions and those for raising awareness on the AGROTEC & RETCETEC projects, two inverse missions have been organised for both projects.

The first one was with the representatives of the Agricultural Office of Berkane, partners in turn in the AGROTEC project, because their participation has been key to be able to organize the project in Mo-roccan territory. In this sense, Tecnova organized an inverse mission for them to get to know Tecnova and companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture

of Almería, in order to share synergies and look at potential commercial relations. This action took place in November as culminating point of the AGROTEC project, so that a closing session for the project was carried out and bilateral meetings with motivated companies were held too. The Manager of the Foun-dation, Ms. Mª Carmen Galera, carried out a presen-tation which was also attended by all partners in the project (Chamber for Commerce of Almería, Univer-sity of Almería & members of the Regional Board for the valorisation of Agriculture of Moulouya) on the results obtained in the project and the importance of keeping collaboration and strengthening relations between both cross-border regions. Moreover, a pre-sentation on the actions carried out by Tecnova within the RETCETEC project took place.

Taking this as an opportunity, a detailed presentation on Tecnova infrastructures took place, both in our

main site and at the Experimental centre. The purpo-se was for them to know first hand all Spanish tech-nology represented by companies from Almería and which stand as a top example of intensive horticulture internationally.

10. Internationalization

possibilities of exporting this model to their country. On the agenda of the Chilean representatives, there was, among other, a session entitled: “Almería’s agri-cultural miracle”, by the Director of ‘Biorizon’. It was followed by the participation of Mr. Rafael Peral, Ge-neral Director of PITA, who explained on the present R&D+i aspect of activities linked to intensive farming.

Later on, Ms. Mª Carmen Galera, Manager of Tec-nova, made a speech on innovation as a booster for competitiveness from the point of view of horticul-tural production, including Post-harvesting and Pac-kaging. Closing the speeches, there was Mr. Roberto García, Manager for Agro-alimentary Business at the saving’s bank Cajamar, and visits to the Tecnova Ex-perimental Centre. Also, a meal was organized on Tecnova’s experimental kitchen, led by Mr. Antonio Gázquez. Finally, as culminating point of their agen-da, there were visits from the AIA and marketing sectors.

Visit of Moroccan entrepreneurs hosted by PITA

Within the POCTEFEX project, where PITA is inclu-ded, a visit took place to Tecnova facilities where the workings of the Foundation were explained. It also dealt with the agro-industrial cluster and the ongoing work being done from the several working areas of the Foundation.

7th International Meeting of AIA organized by Extenda

A delegation of business people coming from eight countries - Mexico, Peru, Algeria, Tunisia, Chile, Uni-ted Arab Emirates, Morocco & USA - have visited Tecnova facilities, showing interest for the compa-nies that are part of it, as well as for the actions that

are carried out from the Foundation in the field of Horticultural Production Technology, Post-harvesting, and Packaging. Previous to this date, these business people were visiting other companies within the sec-tor. All of it was framed within the 7th International Meeting of AIA (Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture) or-ganized by Extenda (Andalusian Agency for External Promotion) and taking place at the Exhibition and Conference Centre of Roquetas de Mar (Almería). This event gathered together up to 24 signatures with a view to establish joint collaborations at international level.

Visit of Mr. Alberto Vallarino - businessman & former Ministry for Economy and Finance of Panama

Mr. Alberto Vallarino, former Ministry for Economy and Finance & renowned businessman from Panama, visited Spain accompanied by his engineer, in order to hold meetings with business people from Almería from the horticultural sector, as well as to visit Tecno-va facilities. The main idea was to learn on the invest-ment possibilities in greenhouse structures built with

Spanish technology, so as to build greenhouses in a wide area of Panama. He showed interest in green-house building companies, as well as in greenhouse consumables that are needed for intensive agricultu-re. The agenda planned by Tecnova included visits to marketing companies and to the Chamber for Com-merce of Almería as well.

Commercial mission of business people from Dominican Republic A delegation of business people from Dominican Re-public visited the premises of Tecnova, on a visit hos-ted by the company ‘Riegos & Tecnología’, part of the Foundation. The agricultural businessmen mana-ged to learn first hand on the pilot plants and plastic labs; microbiology, post-harvesting and other areas; as well as the technology and new greenhouse proto-types exhibited in the Centre. This mission was aimed at promoting commercial relations between these two countries.
