This gold and silver medallist at the recent SEA Games started riding at 8 but only started competing at 14. “I loved horses since I was very young and I’ve always been competitive. I’m very at home in the competition arena, and that really helps,” says Chew whose day job is at a consultancy firm. The 26 year-old is planning to participate in the R10 qualifier at end of August and after that she will be training for the 2017 SEA Games and 2018 Asian Games.

Hence IHA Yoga, launched in February 2014, a teacher-trainer academy that certifies yoga instructors.

The 35-year-old has another project with an NGO, called “Travel Like a Humanitarian”, where you travel and learn about the social, political and environmental challenges of a community.

Angie Chia lives this reality, as she has no formal training in fashion. “I’ve always been fascinated by and interested in fashion, and I am proud that I can do what I do without having to go to any fashion school,” says Chia. “As long as you love what you do and work hard for it, I believe that someday you will see a positive outcome.”

It’s hard to believe that the cheeky host of the morning show on 987FM was a wallflower. “I was never really a self-assured person. It was only after I began to socialise more during my Polytechnic days when I realised that I do enjoy connecting with people,” shares the 23-year-old. “I was kicked out in the radio competition initially, and I wouldn’t be here if the judges hadn't picked me as a wild card! You really have to get over these obstacles and push on if you want to succeed.”

“I hope we will be empowered to create the home we want for ourselves, our friends and families, and for Singapore,” says 34 year-old producer Alvin Tan. He started worked on his idea for the musical about three years ago after he returned from a decade living in the US. On top of the musical, Tan is also organising a campaign #OneVoiceOneSg — a grassroots-based digital time capsule of personal stories and expressions of Singapore. “I intend to create a holistic mid to long-term training platform for talents in Singapore and selected parts of Asia, to encourage sharing of resources, and to facilitate structured giving in philanthropy.”

Dione Song was encouraged to join the finance industry from a young age. “It wasn’t long before I realised that it wasn’t my cup of tea and I quickly made a jump — I’ve never regretted it,” says the 27-year-old. We do everything in-house, so I get to work on everything from campaigns to pop-up stores — perfect for me.”

Dr Ruen Chew calls himself a radical psychologist. “I enjoy blurring the lines and breaking boundaries, creating new methods, techniques and rules.” He co-founded Happyology Asia with Cheng Peishan who left her decade-long career in the creative industry to become an accredited yoga teacher last year. Chew hopes Happyology will “create innovative and fun ‘mind-healing’ programmes that will give city dwellers a new perspective to view challenges and to help them find comfort and joy”.

Everyone knows him by his moniker THELIONCITYBOY. Kevin Lester has his sister to thank for “introducing” rap music to him. “Somewhere between digging for records in the stores and listening to her stash of CDs, I started to experiment writing rap. It gave me a voice after that. A voice bigger than my own,” says Lester who got signed to a US label called BMBX — owned by AplDeAp from the Black Eyed Peas. This artiste, producer and songwriter is also slated to drop some new music towards the end of the year. “You'll get to finally hear all the cool songs I worked on when BMBX brought me up to LA. It’s gonna be so awesome! Stay tuned.”

They say music and fashion co-exist and Karl Lagerfeld agrees: “Music is part of the life of fashion, too.” And music is what keeps Lee alive. “I wake up every day knowing that I wouldn't want to exchange what I do for anything else,” says the petite stylista. With her husband Kevin Lester, she used to be part of the band Sixx; but these days Lee is concentrating more on her first born child, Zola Mae, and her day job as a marketing director and copywriter at design firm Elementary Co. Fans of Lee can expect her to release her own music in the next two years.

The local fashion label was started by four young Singaporeans in 2012, who clean and modern-looking essentials. Having worked together at Alldressedup, this design duo split the work. “My interest in fashion stems from the techniques in construction and the art of dress making,” says Kane Tan, whose focus on technicality is balanced by Sven Tan’s more fluid philosophy. “I’ve always been interested in clothes and how style can be used to express one’s personality…I like creating things and clothes are my medium,” shares the latter.

“My co-founder, Derek, and I had the aim of making great Asian films accessible to a global audience — and also building an ecosystem for content creators online,” says Ho. Viddsee streams award-winning Asian short films to millions of viewers through their digital devices. “I’ve seen how the films on Viddsee have inspired, entertained and brought new perspective to many people, and that’s what keeps me going,” enthuses Ho.

“As a child I was really influenced by my seamstress mum. I grew up watching fabr ics be ing cut , and pieces being assembled into garments,” says the 31 year-old. The homegrown designer has been marked for success ever since he launched his namesake label in 2010 — his designs can be found in Norway, Sweden and Dubai; and he recently opened his first standalone boutique at Capitol Piazza.

Venturing into the restaurant business was quite "a natural progression" for Thaddeus Yeo who always had an interest in culinary world. Yeo never had any formal training in the industry but has successfully managed three restaurants in his career including Lolla and Lol lapa looza .
