Bierstadt, Albert (1830-1902) Nevada Falls, YosemiteOil on Canvas, 39 x 30 inches1872-3American B.35.2

At Nevada Falls in California’s Yosemite Valley, the Merced River plunges over a high ledge onto ajumble of boulders almost six hundred feet below, creating a torrent of white water and plumes of spray.Tourists were able to visit Nevada Falls by climbing a rocky trail that rose 1,840 feet in elevation fromVernal Falls, a mile and a half downstream. Bierstadt signals this possibility by portraying severalsightseers, among them two women in hiking gear.

Brueghel, Pieter 1525-1569 Boerendans (The Peasant Dance)Oil on panel1567-9Flemish B.80.2

Gluttony, lust and anger can all be identified in the picture. The man seated next to the bagpipeplayer wears a peacock feather in his hat, a symbol of vanity and pride.[4] The occasion for thepeasants' revelry is a saint's day, but dancers turn their backs on the church and pay noattention whatsoever to the image of the Virgin which hangs on the tree. The prominence of thetavern makes it clear that they are preoccupied with material rather than spiritual matters.

The popular[12] painting shows a group of 125 wedding guests wearing clothing from the times, presented in the canvas in an apparently chaotic way in an outdoor party surrounded by trees.[13][14][15][16] The brides wore black as it was the Renaissance period and the men wore codpieces, which were an important part of their clothing at the time.[17][18] Voyeurism (spying on peopleengaged in intimate behaviours) is shown throughout the entire work amongst almost all of thepeople.Brueghel, Pieter, c.1530-1569. Currier & Ives (Frances Palmer and James Ives Across the Continent: "Westward the CoursePaintingAmerican C.130.04

For most of the century, the New York firm of Nathan Currier and James Ives was immensely popularas "Publishers of Colored Engravings for the People." Their prints of familiar American scenes, sellingfor 5¢ to 25¢ apiece, were easy to understand and were executed without artiness. This famouslithograph by Ives from an original drawing by Fanny Palmer fairly teems with icons of the nation's faithin its "manifest destiny": a frontier settlement at the edge of civilization is the last stop on the wagontrail, while newly-laid train tracks stretch west to the horizon. On the cars is lettered Through Line New

Gainsborough, Thomas 1727-1788 The Blue BoyPainting1770English G.10.02

The Huntington Library, Portrait of Jonathan Buttall, the son of a successful hardware merchant, whowas a close friend of the artist. The artist has dressed the young man in a costume dating from about140 years before the portrait was painted. This type of costume was familiar through the portraits of thegreat Flemish painter, Anthony van Dyck (1559-1641), who was resident in England during the early 17thcentury. Gainsborough greatly admired the work of Van Dyck and seems to have conceived The BlueBoy as an act of homage to that master.

Picasso, Pablo Mother and ChildPainting1922Spanish P.40.24

Baltimore Museum of Art. Between 1918 and 1938, we find at least four different women - Olga Picasso,Sara Murphy, Marie Therese Walter, and Dora Maar- associated with Picasso's shifting classical ideal. As each woman is assimlated to this ideal, her individual features are transformed and on someoccasions, merged with her rivals. Similarly the characteristic costume of one woman may also be foundin a portrait of another.

West, Benjamin 1738-1820 Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from thePainting1816English born W.75.2

13 3/8 x 10 1/16 inches. Philadelphia Museum of Art. The painting is a sketch for a large-scale portrait, never executed, that Benjamin West planned for the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. It showsBenjamin Franklin engaged in the famous experiment of June 1752 that proved that lightning waselectricity. West depicts the moment when a spark of electricity, passing through a key attached to a kiteflying in a stormy sky, jumps to Franklin's raised knuckle. The scene rises to the level of allegory, however, with Franklin perched on clouds and surrounded by angelic assistants.
