2.
A turtle is a reptile with a hard shell. Turtles can live in water or on land. A turtle can pull its head, legs, and tail into its shell to protect itself.

A turtle has a backbone and lungs. A turtle is cold-blooded. Its body will cool down when the sun sets. Turtles depend on the sun to stay warm.
6.
A mother turtle digs a hole in the ground with her back legs and lays many eggs. Then she covers the eggs and walks away. The warm sun helps hatch the eggs. Baby turtles must dig to the top of the ground on their own.
8.
All turtles hatch from eggs on dry land. Some turtles will live on land. Other turtles will crawl to the water as soon as they hatch. Many turtles live both on land and in water.
10.
Some animals eat turtle eggs or baby turtles. Big fish eat baby turtles. The turtles that do become adults can live longer than any other kind of animal.
12.

Turtles can be many sizes. Some turtles are as small as a quarter. The biggest turtles can grow to be eight feet long and weigh 1,500 pounds.
16.
Turtles that live where it gets cold must hibernate. They crawl into the muddy bottom of a pond and sleep until the mud and water warm up again.
18.
People use turtle meat and eggs for food. People also use turtle shells to make things. Some kinds of turtles are almost gone. We have laws to protect those turtles.
20.
Some people try to protect turtle eggs on beaches. Other people collect turtle eggs and hatch them on turtle farms. Maybe we can help increase the number of protected turtles in our world.
