Lumber GradesGrading lumber products establishes quality control standards among mills manufacturing the same or similar woods. These grades provide a dependable measure for determining the quality of lumber.
The Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) sets official grade rules, conforming to American Lumber Standards, for mills in 12 western states. The WWPA grade stamp, visible on White Pine, Spruce-Pine-Fir and other western species sold at Requarth Lumber, is assurance of its assigned grade.
The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) publishes grading rules under which more than 95% of the production of Southern Pine lumber is sold. To qualify for a SPIB grade-making license, a mill must have well-established credentials in manufacturing, seasoning and grading.
Recommended UsesSpruce-Pine-Fir, Fir and Southern Yellow Pine are recommended and widely used for general framing purposes. Pieces are of good appearance, but graded primarily for strength and serviceability.

Proper storage is essential to the efficient and economical use of lumber. It protects lumber from fungi and insects and prevents defects that may result from alternate wetting and drying. It helps maintain appearance and dimensional stability and acts as an important safeguard against costly callbacks.
When lumber maintains its dimensional stability, it is less likely to twist, cup, warp, etc.
Such stability is also necessary for non-structural applications, including siding, paneling, mould and trim. Here, additional costs may be incurred if the product has to be redried, repaired or replaced.
Moisture ContentProper storage is primarily a means of protecting the lumber’s appearance and of controlling moisture changes in the wood. Understanding how moisture changes occur is the key to proper storage.
Wood either absorbs or loses moisture, depending on the difference between its moisture content and the surrounding atmospheres. Air temperature also plays a role. When the air is cold, moisture changes occur slowly. On the other hand, warm, humid surroundings will cause dry wood to quickly gain moisture.
When lumber dries, moisture moves from the interior to the surface. The reverse is true for absorption as moisture travels from the wet exterior to the drier interior. During this process of moisture loss or absorption, lumber shrinks or swells accordingly.
Problems begin when shrinkage or swelling occurs unevenly or too quickly. This action breaks down the wood fibers, often causing grade loss in the form of twists, cuts, warps, splits or checks.
In addition to its dimensional properties, lumber is subject to fungal decay and stain. Fungal growth may occur when moisture content reaches 20% or greater and air temperature is between 40° and 100° F. Even high humidity can cause mold and stain to develop.
Improperly stored or unprotected lumber is prone to rapid or uneven moisture changes and other hazards. To prevent these, certain measures apply depending on whether the material is green or dry and the type of storage facilities available.
Green LumberGreen lumber or unseasoned lumber, can be stored outdoors without protection in cold weather, provided the storage period is not extensive. For longer periods, the lumber should be stickered.
Stickering allows air circulation, which helps prevent mold and stain from developing. Some wetting is not hazardous because the moisture content of green lumber is affected little by rainfall.
Dry LumberUnlike green lumber, kiln- or air-dried lumber must not get wet. Otherwise, the product may lose the value that was added by careful seasoning.
Rain wetting of any dried lumber can also impair its dimensional stability. If stored outdoors, dry lumber must be protected by tarpaulins, canvas, plastic wrap or paper wrapping. Paper wrapping offers only short-term protection. Torn wrappers caused by mishandling should be repaired promptly. Lumber stored at the job site is seldom adequately protected, but should be. Avoid placing unprotected lumber directly on the ground. Rather, use supports under the lumber units to keep them from mud and ground water. Hazards of moisture regain are a particular concern for pre-fabricated building components, such as trusses.
Lumber at the job site should be protected by a tarp or other type of cover. If plastic is used, leave enough room at the bottom of the pile for airflow. Otherwise, plastic that reaches to the ground will act like a greenhouse, trapping ground moisture within the stack.
With good scheduling, contractors can keep the volume of exposed lumber to a minimum until the roof is completed and storage space within the building becomes available.
Paneling, Moulding and MillworkPaneling, moulding and millwork should always be stored on supports, indoors and with good ventilation. Keep such products away from newly poured concrete or freshly drywalled surfaces, as these greatly increase the humidity of the storage space.
In addition, these materials should be acclimatized before application. Acclimatization allows the wood product to reach a moisture equilibrium in its new setting. Thus, any shrinking or swelling will take place before the material is nailed in place.
To acclimatize the product, place it on stickers and store it for seven to ten days in the room in which it is to be used. Again, the room should not have freshly drywalled surfaces or a new concrete floor.
SidingFor siding, store in a covered, unheated area such as an open garage or carport at the job site. Keep it protected from rain, snow or sun and off the ground. Siding needs to be acclimatized to the on-site atmospheric conditions, but protected from excessive moisture gain or loss. This way, it will become dimensionally stable and ready for prefinishing prior to installation.

Engineered Wood is Available at RequarthEngineered wood includes a wide range of products manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, lumber or other forms of wood fiber to produce a larger and integral composite unit.
Structural engineered wood products are “engineered” by virtue of possessing design values that are confirmed by methods other than simple visual grading.
APA divides structural engineered wood products into four general categories: 1) wood structural panels, including plywood, oriented strand board and composite panels; 2) glued laminated timber (glulam); 3) structural composite lumber (SCL), including primarily laminated veneer lumber (LVL), but also parallel strand lumber and oriented strand lumber; and 4) wood I-joists.
These products are extremely efficient because they utilize more of the available resource with minimal waste. In addition, in many cases, they are produced using faster growing and often under utilized wood species from managed forests and tree farms, thus reducing the industry’s reliance on “old-growth” forests.

Plywood Product and Performance StandardsPanels for construction and industrial applications can be manufactured in a variety of ways – as plywood (cross-laminated wood veneer), as composites (veneer faces bonded to reconstituted wood cores) or as non-veneer panels (including waferboard, oriented strand board and certain specific classes of particleboard).
Some grades of veneered panels are manufacturing specifications under the performance testing provisions of U.S. Product Standard PS 1-83 for Construction and Industrial Plywood, developed cooperatively by the plywood industry and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Other veneered panels, as well as an increasing number of performance-rated composite and non-veneer panels, are manufactured under the provision of American Plywood Association PRP-108, Performance Standards and Policies for Structural-Use Panels, that establish performance criteria for specific designated construction applications.
These APA Performance-Rated Panels are easy-to-use and specify because the recommended end-use and maximum support spacings are clearly indicated in the APA trademark. By broadening the range of panel configuration and composition, APA Performance-Rated Panels allow more efficient use of raw materials. APA PRP-108 Performance Standards are recognized by the National Evaluation Service and FHA, PRP-108 and/or the PS 1 grade conformance are given in the lower portion of the APA trademark. Veneered panels, depending on glueline classification, veneer species and thickness, etc., are in many instances identical to panel grades as defined in Product Standard PS 1-83.
Grade DesignationsStructural panel grades are generally identified in terms of the veneer grade used on the face and back of the panel (e.g., A-B, B-C, etc.) or by a name suggesting the panel’s intended end-use (e.g., APA RATED SHEATHING, APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR, etc.).
Veneer grades define veneer appearance in terms of natural unrepaired growth characteristics and allowable number and size of repairs that may be made during manufacture. The highest quality veneer grades are N and A. The minimum grade of veneer permitted in exterior plywood is C-grade. D-grade veneer is used in panels intended for interior use or applications protected from permanent exposure to weather.
Sanded, Unsanded and Touch-Sanded PanelsPanels with B-grade or better veneer faces are always sanded smooth in manufacture to fulfill the requirements of their intended end-use applications, such as cabinets, shelving, furniture, built-ins, etc. APA RATED SHEATHING panels are unsanded since a smooth surface is not a requirement of their intended end-use. Still other panels such as APA UNDERLAYMENT, APA RATED STURD-I-FLOOR, APA C-D PLUGGED and APA C-C PLUGGED require only touch-sanding for “sizing” to make the panel thickness more uniform.
Unsanded and touch-sanded panels and panels with B-grade or better veneer on one side only, usually carry the APA trademark on the panel back. Panels with both sides of B-grade or better veneer on one side only usually carry the APA trademark on the panel back. Panels with both sides of B-grade or better veneer or with special overlaid surfaces (such as high density overlay), usually carry the APA trademark on the panel edge.
Exposure DurabilityAPA trademarked panels may be produced in four exposure durability classifications — Exterior, Exposure 1, Exposure 2 and Interior.
Exterior panels have a fully waterproof bond and are designed for applications subject to permanent exposure to the weather or to moisture.
Exposure 1 panels have a fully waterproof bond and are designed for applications where long construction delays may be expected prior to providing protection or where high moisture conditions may be encountered in service. Exposure 1 panels are made with the same exterior adhesives used in exterior panels. However, because other compositional factors may affect bond performance, only exterior panels should be used for permanent exposure to the weather.
Exposure 2 panels (identified as interior type with intermediate glue under PS 1) are intended for protected construction applications where only moderate delays in providing protection from moisture may be expected.
Interior panels, which lack further glueline information in their trademarks, are manufactured with interior glue and are intended for interior applications only.
Group NumberPlywood can be manufactured from over 70 species and are divided on the basis of strength and stiffness into five Groups under U.S. Product Standard PS 1-83. Strongest species are in Group 1, the next strongest in Group 2 and so on. When face and back veneers are not from the same species Group, the higher Group number is used, except for sanded panels 3/8 inch-thick or less and decorative panels of any thickness. These are identified by face species because they are chosen primarily for appearance and used in applications where structural integrity is not critical. Sanded panels greater than 3/8 inch are identified by face species if C- or D-grade backs are at least 1/8 inch and are no more than one species group number larger. Some species are used widely in plywood manufacture. Check with Requarth Lumber for availability if a particular species is desired.

Storing and HandlingPlywood, like any other panel product, requires proper handling and storage. Despite its sturdy cross-laminated construction, face veneers, panel edges and panel corners are vulnerable to damage and should always be protected. Plywood is manufactured at a low moisture content and, while small changes in moisture content will not appreciably affect its dimensions, large changes should be avoided since they may encourage checking of the face veneer with consequent impairment of its qualities as a paint base. It is good practice to store plywood, which is to be used for interior finish, under conditions that approximate those it will experience in service.
Points to watch when handling plywood are:
• Store plywood panels flat and level.
• Keep finish faces inward and cover stacks to protect from bumping and abrasion.
• Protect panel edges and corners. This is especially important with T&G plywood.
• Carry panels on edge (always being careful not to damage faces, edges and corners).
• When plywood is used as a finishing material, deliver to job site at the last possible moment. Protect panels from sunlight, water or excessive humidity.
Sawing
Hand sawing For handsaw work, panels should be sawn face (good side) up with the angle between saw teeth and panel surface as flat as possible. This prevents face veneer splintering. Generally, an 8 or 10 point cross-cut saw or a 10 point panel saw gives the best results.
Hand power sawing A sharp carbide tip combination blade set to protrude no more than 12.5 mm through the panel and firm panel support will give excellent results with a hand power saw. Panels should be sawn face down.
Table power sawing Panels kept face up on a table power saw are cut cleaner. A combination blade filed with less than normal hook is best for most work. The blade should be set to protrude no more than 12.5 mm. In general, a blade of 250 mm diameter or more works best. A table extension will help in handling full-sized panels. When using a radial arm saw, the orientation of the plywood panel will depend on the type of cuts being made. The instruction manual accompanying the radial arm saw should be consulted.
DrillingHand brace and bit, power drill or drill press all work easily with plywood. Holes of large diameter are best cut with a brace and expansion bit rather than with a high-speed drill. For power drilling, spur bits give good results. Reversing the panel as soon as the bit point is through and completing the cut from the other side will ensure a clean cut without splintering. Small holes are readily cut with either hand or power drills. As a general rule, the larger the hole the slower the drill speed. Clean cuts can be obtained with all methods of drilling if the panel has firm support and is backed with scrap wood to prevent splintering.
RoutingRouters can be used to V-groove, shiplap or rebate edges of panels. Special bits are available for mould and chamfering. Use sharp bits and work carefully across panel. Deep cuts in panel edges should be made in two stages. For specific instructions, see router manufacturer’s literature.
BendingWhen dry, plywood panels can easily be bent into mild simple curves. Plywood can be bent more sharply when the bend is perpendicular to the direction of the face grain to obtain smaller radii. For sharper curves, the panels must be soaked or steamed. Saw-kerfing the back of the panel to make it bend more easily is not recommended if the plywood is to be used structurally. Compound curves are virtually unobtainable with a single plywood panel and should not be attempted.
Edge FinishingPlanes used on plywood edges are working on grain that goes in both directions because of cross lamination of the plies. For this reason, a sharp plane with shallow set is recommended. A light jack plane will work well on most jobs and planing in from the ends towards the center helps prevent the ends from splintering. Power tools will help get a smooth edge. A power saw with a carbide tip blade can produce a smooth edge if the first cut is made more generous than is necessary and the edge is then cut to size with a hollow-ground blade. With a jointer, it is best to feed the wood into the jointer head slowly. With a disc sander, feed the panel slowly against the sander at a slight angle so that the area of edge contact is on the downward side of the rotating disc.
SandingWhen finish-sanding the panel face, work with the grain using even pressure and regular strokes. Use fine sandpaper for final easing and smoothing the edges and for rubbing down between coats of paint.

Requarth Lumber stocks hardwood plywood in Birch, Red Oak and Poplar that are ideal for many interior cabinet and trim applications due to their excellent appearance and stainability. All feature core veneers of hardwood rather than particleboard or medium density fiberboard. This means less weight per sheet and better dimensional stability, screw holding and lending strength.
Our Oak and Birch plywoods feature an "A" grade face veneer, or poplar a "B" face. The back side grades vary from "1" to "3". Grades are based on appearance and are influenced by the number and size of knots, presence of mineral stains and sap and the number of splits or joints in the veneer.
Baltic Birch (3/4" x 5' x 5')Baltic Birch plywood is produced in Russia and sold in a B/B grade. Its void free core and 13-ply construction provide a highly stable panel that is well-suited for cabinet making and a wide variety of other fine woodworking projects. (Stock # 34B1R55).
Lauan Mahogany (1/4" x 4' x 8')Lauan Mahogany plywood in BB/CC grade is an inexpensive choice for a variety of utility applications and is commonly used for underlayment and cabinet backing. Our lauan plywood is produced in Indonesia and Malaysian and sold in 5.2mm thinckness, approximately 1/4". (Stock # 14LAU).

Oriented Strand Board and PlywoodAlthough different in composition and appearance, plywood and oriented strand board are manufactured according to the same performance standards. These standards apply uniform performance criteria to both products for their designated end uses — wall sheathing, roof sheathing, subflooring (APA Rated Sheathing) and single-layer flooring (APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor). The standards are recognized by all of the major model building codes. These products can withstand moisture and exposure during building construction, but are designed to be covered or secured in protected locations.
MDO ExteriorCommonly used for signs and cement forms. Overlay applied to one side on MD1 and two sides on MD2. Provides smooth surface for painting.
Plywood SubflooringSturdifloor tongue and groove plywood subflooring is available in both southern yellow pine and fir.
Louisiana Pacific Top Notch HP SubflooringEngineered, tongue and groove panels. 90 day no-sanding guarantee. Greater weatherability than plywood. Self-spacing tongue and groove edges. Limited lifetime warranty.
PlyformUsed for concrete forms.
Marine PlywoodMarine Pylwood, in A/B grade, is commonly used in boat making applications. While the same exterior glue as in all exterior construction grade plywood is used, it is the voidless core plies that differentiate marine plywood. This improves bending qualities and increases resistance to delamination caused by vibration from the boat's motor.

Natural Wood SidingSolid wood has long been used as a siding material. Its natural beauty is timeless and the color and textures available are unmatched by other building products. Such properties make wood siding adaptable to a wide variety of regional preferences, architectural styles and climates.
When correctly installed and maintained, natural wood siding will last for decades and sometimes centuries.
Checklist for a Siding Material Specification Select species suited to the project.
List grade names, paragraph numbers and rules-writing agency.
Specify surface texture for exposed face.
Specify moisture content suited to the project.
If grade stamped, specify that the lumber be stamped on back or ends.
Specify VG (vertical grain) if appropriate and available.
Specify pattern and size.
Siding Installation TipsDo not nail through overlapping pieces. Use stainless steel, high-tensile strength aluminum or hot-dipped galvanized nails with ring or spiral-threaded shanks. Use casing nails to blind nail and siding or box nails to face nail.
Coverage Calculations1. Calculate the square footage in walls:
length x width = square feet.
2. Calculate and then subtract, the square footage of openings. Add 10% for trim and waste.
3. Multiply the result by the factor for lineal feet (see below).

RedwoodRedwood gives specifiers and designers a unique opportunity for integrating interior and exterior spaces with a common material.
Outstanding weathering qualities guarantee that projects will retain their handsome appearance. Tests by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory show that redwood loses less than 1/4 inch of wood fiber in 100 years of exterior exposure. Less shrinkage means less warping, cupping and nail-popping.
Natural decay and insect resistance protects all redwood heartwood surfaces, including saw-cut edges, end grain and nail holes.
Finish RetentionRedwood has an open-celled structure and contains little or no pitch or resins. This combines with redwood’s natural stability to enable redwood to absorb and retain all types of finishes extremely well.
Clear All HeartClear All Heart is a superior grade for fine sidings and architectural uses. It is all heartwood and the graded face of each piece is free of knots.
ClearClear is similar in quality to Clear All Heart, except that it includes sapwood in varying amounts. Some boards may have one or two small, tight knots on the graded face.
Heart BHeart B is an economical all-heartwood grade containing a limited number of tight knots and characteristics not permitted in Clear or Clear All Heart. It is graded on one face and one edge.
B GradeB Grade is an economical grade containing a limited number of tight knots with sapwood accenting the heartwood.
SeasoningClear All Heart, Clear, Heart B and B Grade sidings are available Certified Kiln Dried for applications requiring minimal shrinkage and top performance.
TexturesSurfaced sidings have a smooth, planed face emphasizing the wood’s grain and color. Saw-textured sidings have re-sawn faces providing a rough textured appearance that holds finishes extremely well.
PrimingIt is recommended that a water-repellent containing mildewcide be applied to all surfaces of redwood siding before construction begins.

Requarth Stocks D-BLAZE® Fire-Retardant Treated WoodAt Requarth Lumber, we stock lumber and plywood treated with D-BLAZE®, a well-established interior fire retardant with a superior record of performance.
Fire-retardant treated (FRT) wood is commonly specified for projects with stringent fire safety requirements. These include nursing homes, college dormitories, commercial offices, shopping malls and government buildings. Customers typically purchase D-BLAZE FRT lumber for sheathing, subflooring, joists, studs, blocking and furring.
D-BLAZE FRT wood can be used in virtually any interior environment where humidity is not expected to exceed 95% for prolonged periods and where the wood is not exposed directly to weather.
When ordinary wood is exposed to fire, it heats and forms gases, combustible tars and smoke. When D-BLAZE treated wood is exposed to flame, the chemicals form an insulating layer of non-combustible gasses and water vapor, causing the wood to char instead of burn. Practically no smoke is evident and, when the flame sources are removed, any fire on the treated wood extinguishes itself.
Every piece carries the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) stamp that ensures it meets the highest standards in the industry. In fact, the performance of D-BLAZE materials meets or exceeds the standards of major building codes, insurance rating bureaus and national organizations involved in certifying fire-retardant building materials.

CCA Wood Preservative Phased Out, Replaced by Alternate Formulation MCQIn 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a voluntary decision by industry to move consumer use of pressure-treated lumber products away from preservatives that contain arsenic. This action affects virtually all residential uses of wood treated with chromated copper arsenate, also known as CCA, including wood used in play-structures, desks, picnic tables, landscaping timbers, residential fencing, patios and boardwalks.
Throughout 2003, the industry made the transition to an arsenic-free formulation that was first introduced more than a decade ago. These products were marketed under the ACQ Preserve® and Osmose NatureWood® brand names and were available at Requarth Lumber. In 2008, we began selling a new generation arsenic free product from Osmose® called MicroPro®, a treating process that utilizes micronized copper quaternary compounds to help protect wood from termites and fungal decay. It is building code compliant under ICC - ES Report, ESR-1980.
Unlike ACQ, the MicroPro technology system does not use organic solvents to dissolve the copper component. Instead, the MicroPro systems utilize patent pending micronizing technology to grind copper particles so small that they can penetrate into the wood in solid form. Wood products treated with the MicroPro preservative system, when compared to current copper-based wood treatments, offer consumer benefits of lower corrosion to metal fasteners, approval for aluminum contact, and better painting and staining qualities because of the wood's lighter color.
MicroPro treated wood products are available for above ground, ground contact and fresh water contact. The products are not currently approved for saltwater immersion applications.
The unique MicroPro production process results in the reduction of an estimated 20,000 tons or more greenhouse gas emissions each year, based on annual production levels. (This is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 2,200 SUVs.) The MicroPro formulation requires fewer trucks to transport the preservative when compared to other wood treatment products. Fewer trucks mean reduced pollutants from tailpipe emissions and, as a result, reduced contribution to acid rain, smog, soot and oceanic acidification.
Building TipsWhatever you build with Osmose brand wood products will last a long time. So, it makes good sense to build in a craftsmanlike manner. Here are some helpful tips to make your job easier and look better.
Use Galvanized Fasteners/Deck Board AdhesiveUse high quality, corrosion-resistant nails, screws and other fasteners. For best results, hot-dip galvanized, stainless steel or other fasteners approved by Osmose are recommended. Simpson Strong-Tie has tested MCQ treated lumber and states that their minimum recommendation is to use galvanized G90 (.90 oz. zinc per square foot of surface area) fasteners for interior dry applications where the wood is dry (moisture content less than 19%) when installed and will remain dry in-service. For exterior applications, wet or dry, Simpson recommends their
ZMAX®/HDG G185 connectors as a minimum. For higher exposure environments, such as along coastlines, Simpson recommends Type 303, 304, 305 or 316 Stainless Steel connectors and fasteners. Adhesives add extra holding power. Apply adhesives in accordance with manufacturer’s directions.
When Appearance Permits, Nail Bark Side UpAs a general rule, nail boards bark side up (annual rings arc upward). However, the best face should be placed up when a defect of the wood is apparent.
Drill Pilot HolesEspecially when nailing or screwing near the edge or end of a board, it’s a good idea to drill pilot holes for your fasteners. Pilot holes will help minimize splitting.
Deck Board SpacingIf the wood is wet after treatment, butt decking boards together firmly. As drying occurs, some shrinkage can be expected. If the wood has been kiln-dried or air-dried after treatment, allowing for shrinkage is not necessary.
Apply a Weather-Resistant FinishAny exposed wood, pressure treated or not, should be protected from the weather. Application of a quality clear water repellent or semi-transparent stain which contains a water repellent will help minimize the cycles of moisture take-up and loss the wood goes through outdoors. A clear water repellent can be immediately applied to your deck or other project. If you choose to use a semi-transparent stain which contains a water repellent, you need to first check that your project is surface dry. In all instances, follow the manufacturer’s directions when applying water repellents or semi-transparent stains which contain a water repellent.
Requarth’s Preservative-Treated Lumber carries a Warranty from OsmoseTreated lumber protects wood from termites and fungi — two of wood’s most destructive enemies. Borate Preservative-Treated Wood
BoratesBorates (disodium octaborate tetrahydrate) are naturally occurring mineral salts that are essential to growing plants and nutritionally important to a healthy human diet. While borates are harmless to humans, they are toxic to insects.
Borates have been used to control insects, including termites, carpenter ants and roaches, in homes for years. Borates interfere with insects' metabolic systems and effectively kill them. They also protect against rot and fungi and have excellent to outstanding corrosion resistance to common metals, according to standards established by the AWPA. No special fasteners or flashings are required.
Because borate leaches from wood when the wood gets wet, lumber treated with borates is used in protected, not exposed, locations. Its primary use among Requarth's customers is for treated sill plate.

Railing Materials
Composite Decking — Louisiana Pacific WeatherBest™Louisiana Pacific WeatherBest™ decking material is an attractive, easy-to-work-with alternative to solid sawn wood decking material. It is more weather-, decay- and insect-resistant than solid wood lumber. WeatherBest is made with a mildecide to battle mold. The composite is manufactured from 60% wood and 40% plastic.
IpeIpe consists of about 20 species of trees found in practically every Latin American country except Chile. Its strength, durability and hardness (2-3 times that of oak) make Ipe an ideal option for deck surfaces and handrails.
Requarth Lumber provides a premium all heart grade which gives a truly superior appearance. The color is a dark olive brown, the texture is fine and the grain is closely and narrowly interlocked. The wood is very heavy and averages about 64 pounds per cubic foot at 12 percent moisture content. Thoroughly air-dried specimens of heartwood generally sink in water.
Ipe is highly resistant to decay and insects, including both subterranean and dry-wood termites. The manufacturer provides a 25-year transferable limited warranty against rot or structural damage from termites or fungus.
Due to its density, oily nature and alkalinity, Ipe does not accept most paints. Should you wish to maintain the dark, olive brown color, apply an oil-based UV inhibitor like Messmer’s UV Plus.

Window and Door Mouldings
Window and door mouldings trim gaps between and around doors, windows and surrounding walls.
Brick Mould Used as exterior door and window casing. A thick moulding, it provides a surface for brick or other siding to butt against.
Stool An interior trim member serving as a sash or window-frame cap. Stools may be non-rabbetted, beveled-rabbetted or rabbetted to receive the window-frame sill.
Casing Used to trim around door and window openings.
Stop As a door trim, stop is nailed to the face of the doorframe to prevent the door from swinging through. As window trim, stop holds the bottom sash of a double-hung window in place. Stop is also used as an apron under window stools.
Glass Bead Also called glass stop, cove and bead or putty, is used to hold glass in place.
Jamb Stock Used for vertical side members (legs) and the top of a door or window frame (head piece).
Extension Jambs Used to extend Andersen window frames in width to meet the wall surface.
Thresholds Placed on top of the sill to provide a place for the door to close and seal tight.
Drip Cap Applied over exterior window and doorframes to keep water from seeping under siding. It is also used to direct water away from window glass.

Wall mouldings are used to add visual interest to flat surfaces and protect corners.
Outside Corner Used to protect corners or to cover ragged edge where wall covering and painted surfaces meet at outside corner. For inside corner, see quarter round under Miscellaneous Mouldings or cove mould under Ceiling Mouldings.
Cap Mould Typically used at the top of wainscoting or paneling. Beaded ceiling (see Ceiling Mouldings) is a popular wainscoting.
Chair Rail Applied about one third up from the floor, paralleling base moulding and encircling the room. Originally used to prevent chairs from marring walls, today it is a common decorative detail in traditional and colonial design.
Panel Mould Originally used to trim out raised panel wall construction, but is now often used to frame wall coverings for a painted effect. Half round, shingle mould (see Miscellaneous Mouldings) and bed mould (see Ceiling Mouldings) can also be used as a panel mould.

Scotia A concave molding with an irregular curve, typically used under the nosing of stair treads, on skirt boards or for cornice trim.
Screen Mould Similar to screen stock, but has two rounded edges. It takes its name from its application as a moulding to cover seams where screening is fastened to the frame. It is also used to cover edges and seams in a variety of other applications.
Screen Stock A versatile moulding that derives its name from being used to cover seams where screening is fastened to the frame. It is also used to cover edges and seams in a variety of other applications, commonly particle board or flakeboard shelf edges.
Shingle Mould Originally used on the rake of a building or around exterior window frames. May be used in ways similar to panel mould (see Wall Mouldings).
Half Round Used as a screen mould, bead shelf edge or panel mould.
Quarter Round Used as a base shoe, inside corner mould or to cover any 90-degree recessed juncture.
Chamfer Used in highway and dam construction forms to make a chamfered edge at concrete corners. It is also used where kitchen cabinet tops meet the wall and as a linoleum cove (under linoleum where it extends up the wall).

Elimination of CCA Pressure-Treated Wood Requires Connectors to Have More Corrosion ResistancePressure-treated wood is a building material most commonly used in decks, fences and homes to protect against insects and fungal decay. For a number of years, Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) has been the primary chemical treatment used in pressure-treated wood. Recently, the treated wood industry voluntarily decided to phase out CCA pressure-treated wood for residential and general consumer use due to the negative publicity focused on the use of arsenic in CCA. CCA is no longer produced for residential or general consumer use.
New Wood Preservatives are More CorrosiveSeveral new pressure-treated wood alternatives have been created to replace CCA. Although most of the new treatments no longer contain arsenic, many of the new preservatives are generally more corrosive to steel connectors, anchors and fasteners.
Standard G90 Galvanized Connectors and Hangers No Longer AppropriateSimpson Strong-Tie standard G90 galvanized connectors and fasteners are no longer appropriate to use with many of the new types of pressure-treated wood. The new treated wood products require connectors, anchors and fasteners with greater resistance to corrosion.
ZMAX® G185 is Minimum StandardStainless Steel connectors provide the most resistance to corrosion and should be used whenever practical in corrosive environments. If Stainless Steel is not practical, Simpson Strong-Tie recommends its ZMAX® (G185) galvanized products with most types of pressure-treated wood as a minimum standard to help protect against corrosion. ZMAX products are coated with a thicker layer of zinc than standard products. This additional zinc coating improves the corrosion resistance.
The treated wood products now stocked at Requarth Lumber, MCQ is less corrosive than ACQ and some other formulation. Nonetheless, we continue to recommend the use of ZMAX (G185) coated fasteners.
Other Causes of CorrosionYou should be aware that the new pressure-treated wood chemicals are not the only form of corrosion that can affect connectors. When connectors are used in outdoor applications in which they are exposed to the elements (rain, water, soil, fertilizers, etc.), corrosion also occurs. Whenever connectors, anchors or fasteners are used in outdoor applications, a minimum of ZMAX (G185) galvanized connectors should be used.
By selecting connectors that offer greater corrosion resistance, you can extend the service life of your connectors. However, corrosion will still occur. You should perform periodic inspection of your connectors and fasteners to ensure their strength is not being adversely affected by corrosion. In some cases, it may be necessary to have a local professional perform the inspections.
Construction Checklist(List not intended to be comprehensive)
• Determine the type of pressure-treated wood you’re using.
• Match the type of pressure-treated wood with the appropriate Simpson Strong-Tie product coating.
• Always use connectors and fasteners made with the same type of finish.
• Make sure all pressure-treated wood is dry before installation.

Tyvek® StuccoWrap®
With a specially engineered surface texture designed for traditional and synthetic stucco systems in both commercial
and residential construction, Tyvek® StuccoWrap® helps reduce susceptibility to cracking, improves stucco curing and channels moisture out of the wall.
Tyvek® TapeTailored for Tyvek® Weatherization Systems. The crucial, final step for maximum reduction of air infiltration through wall systems is to help create
a seamless, protective envelope sealed with Tyvek Tape.
Dow Styrofoam™ Duramate™
Styrofoam™ Duramate™ Plus extruded polystyrene insulation is a foam board with proprietary extra-tough plastic film on both sides. Recommended for wall sheathing in residential applications. Very tough, durable performance reduces damage on the job site.
Tyvek® HomeWrap®
Tyvek® HomeWrap® is a weatherization membrane that provides a protective layer under a home's siding and over the sheathing. It is wrapped around a home over the wood or foam sheathing, cut out around windows and doors and taped at the seams.
Tyvek helps protect against air infiltration, manages moisture vapor and protects the wall when rain and water get behind vinyl siding, wood siding, brick or stucco. Tyvek helps reduce energy bills and even helps maintain good indoor air quality.
Sill SealStyrofoam™ brand Sill Seal Gasket helps increase energy savings by compressing to seal gaps between the foundation wall and sill plate to prevent air infiltration. The gasket is corrugated on one side, compensating for any irregularities in the top of the foundation wall.
Tyvek® FlexWrap™
A flashing tape for window sills and custom shapes. DuPont™ FlexWrap™ is a moldable flashing material made with Tyvek®, an elastic material, a polyolefin film and a highly-adhesive butyl sealant.
Tyvek® StraightFlash™
A flashing tape for straight jambs and heads. This durable flashing is designed to protect the heads of jambs of rectangular windows. These areas can be subjected to wind-driven rain, which can find its way into a window opening and cause water damage.
