Evangelism: What is it?

Evangelism is simply telling non-Christians the good news about what Jesus Christ has done to save sinners.

In order to biblically evangelize you must:

1) Preach the whole gospel, even the hard news about God’s wrath against sin.2) Call people to repent of their sins and trust in Christ.3) Make clear that believing in Christ is costly, but worth it. 9

Why is it important?

When a church has an unbiblical understanding of the gospel:

1) They don’t evangelize 2) They evangelize in misleading or manipulative ways 3) They share a message that is not the gospel.

A biblical understanding of evangelism clarifies our role in the mission God has given the church: We are to preach the good news about what Christ has done and pray that God would bring people to believe it.

Where the church is a life saving station…

Rescue must be a defining mission

Lu.19:10- For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Pr.24:11-12- If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

Jude 22-23- And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Rescuers are responsible for their stretch of the beach

Rescue is about us going to them, not them coming to us.

Five Mistakes that Cost Us the Lost

1) We speak a language that they do not understand

Colossians 4:3-4- Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

Speak their language, be a missionary

2) We count on them coming to us a) Addicted to programsMatthew 18:12- How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

If we follow the rescue model of Jesus, the center of our efforts will be in their world, not ours.

3) We offer them an answer for that which they sense no need. a) Sin is not an issue to modern lost people. b) The symptoms of spiritual disease are very much an issue. c) Bridge the gap by starting with the symptoms d) Symptom; Disease; Cure

Symptoms Meaning- Purpose Colossians 1:16- For by him were all

4) We encumber God’s simple life saving message

5) We fail to mobilize the best rescuers:
