WINTER 2013 Research and Application for Cotton Stubbles The cotton industry has found that there is a lack of suitable machinery in the market to effectively handle the trash and prepare for the next cropping phase. Our aim through the R&D team is to fill the niche in this industry. To further increase the Speedtiller’s ® effectiveness for root cutting in cotton stubbles, we have researched and trialled the application of a tine system in front; which is proving very successful. This is shown in our recently developed DVD, which can be found on our website: www.k-line.net.au/videos.html. The fact that ‘Speedtiller’ has evolved into the catchword for any one-pass seedbed preparation machine, demonstrates the broad recognition of the effectiveness of the K-Line Speedtiller ® itself. We welcome any suggestions you may have. Regards, K-Line R&D Team The K-Line Speedtiller ® is ideally suited to this development. Given the ability that the Speedtiller ® has to readily produce a well- conditioned soil profile, incorporate stubble and successfully control diverse weeds, it is easy to see why this machine has such wide acceptance in Australia. It is widely recognised as being in a class of its own for superior soil management. We are always seeking to research and develop ways to further improve efficiency in the agricultural industry. Cotton farmers today are facing serious trash management and seedbed preparation challenges. We are currently working on a system to alleviate these challenges. This system aims to achieve a one-pass operation. In many soil types, particularly in free-flowing soils, this will save multiple passes that would typically be required to produce such an outcome. Our goal is to expedite the preparation of ground for the next cropping phase. The K-Line Research and Development Team are constantly working to define and refine their products and welcome any feedback or suggestions that you may have in the cotton industry. The team can be contacted on 1800 194 131.

Research and Application for Cotton Stubbles The cotton industry has found that there is a lack of suitable machinery in the market to effectively handle the trash and prepare for the next cropping phase. Our aim through the R&D team is to fill the niche in this industry.

To further increase the Speedtiller’s® effectiveness for root cutting in cotton stubbles, we have researched and trialled the application of a tine system in front; which is proving very successful. This is shown in our recently developed DVD, which can be found on our website: www.k-line.net.au/videos.html.

The fact that ‘Speedtiller’ has evolved into the catchword for any one-pass seedbed preparation machine, demonstrates the broad recognition of the effectiveness of the K-Line Speedtiller® itself.

We welcome any suggestions you may have.

The K-Line Speedtiller® is ideally suited to this development. Given the ability that the Speedtiller® has to readily produce a well-conditioned soil profile, incorporate stubble and successfully control diverse weeds, it is easy to see why this machine has such wide acceptance in Australia.

WINTER 2013

Every year around 9 million tonnes of fodder (hay, straw and silage) is made. Total value is around $1.3 billion. Approximately half is traded and half retained for on farm use. Buyers are increasingly interested in quality hay. Growers with quality hay have and continue to be rewarded. Historically, the market always seems to run out of good quality hay to sell. This shortage most often occurs during autumn and winter months. Pasture hay reserves are at an all-time low, practically nil. Reel rakes are particularly suited to this type of hay production as they are known to be more reliable, user friendly and require less maintenance. Both the quality and the quantity of hay produced are important in determining returns from an irrigated stand. Under good management, annual yields of good quality Lucerne hay can be achieved – sometimes up to 20 tonnes per hectare. Remember buyers need hay all year round, not just when you are producing it, so storing and selling later can be a sound option. High capacity balers require larger, well-formed windrows to perform properly. Where the windrow is not large enough, the result is poor quality bales and inefficiency in baling.

The Hay Fever Opportunity

Raking is necessary to accelerate curing of the hay and to reduce the number of machinery passes over the hay field during baling, moving and storing of the hay. This is more time and fuel efficient: you have your hay in bales while your neighbour is still getting his machine out of the shed! Ideally, the art of raking is to move the hay gently and via the shortest distance possible, in order to avoid excessive leaf shatter. The setting of the rake should be adjusted so that the hay is not contaminated by ground litter. Raking in windy conditions can often be a problem, because hay will pick up and cause uneven wind rows. V-rakes are more suited to windy conditions than the inline type rake. To help combat this problem, a wind deflector option can be fitted to the reels on good quality rakes. This aids the raking of light fluffy material. Hay quickly formed into a windrow greatly reduces the amount of discoloration caused by dew, particularly in warmer weather. Ease of adjustment of windrow width is a critical factor when choosing your rake. Some high quality rakes are specially designed for this purpose, as a well-formed and correct sized windrow, is really the secret of modern high capacity balers working efficiently. The

design of the reel angle of reel rakes and refinement of height adjustment is an important matter when selecting your hay rake machinery. Points to be considered when purchasing your new hay rake: user friendly design, poly hoops for smooth operation & reduction of tine wear, replaceable bushing in pivot points & powder-coating durability for longevity of rake. Well-balanced castor wheel assembly & adjustable stainless steel pivot brake, alleviates castor wheel whip in transit. With empty sheds and good winter rains, be sure your hay gear is on track for the big hay season! Make no mistake about it; hay gear including rakes, will be at a premium, and as we move into the season, perhaps unprocurable.

We suggest you look at the Australian-made K-Line Rake line up early, as they are highly sought after because of their excellence in design, proven reliability, and well-reported backup service. Remember, the early bird catches the worm! Our range of Inline and V-Rakes are designed to suit those tough demanding jobs that a bumper hay season will bring. Models range from 8 reels with 5.3m operating width to 28 reels with14.6m operating width. Some of the many options available are two and four-reel splitter kits, rear-steer, and choice of reel-types. If you’re quick, our dealer network may still have some stock models available! We assure you, you will have no regrets when you put your K-Line rake to work this season.

K-Line Participates in School Industry Day Visit

On the 30th July, Year 9 students from Canowindra, Quandialla & Grenfell schools were involved in an ‘Industry Day’. This day was set up by the NSW Government Industry Links Officer in the Southern Lachlan and Orange Region.

Cowra businesses hosted groups of students and teachers for a tour and short introduction to the workplace. This was to give the kids some idea of the jobs that are available in Cowra and what is required from them to secure a job when they graduate. The plan also was to introduce the workplace to the students before their stint of Year 10 work experience.

K-Line was asked to participate in this project and as we have a strong belief that a good and complete education is critical to entering the workforce, we were only too happy to have the kids come through.

The K-Line team really enjoyed being a part of this day and found the students to be extremely well behaved and interested in the processes and procedures we covered. We had some excellent questions from the students in regards to all aspects of the business. Some of the K-Line divisions that were involved were Customer Service, Sales, Marketing, Operations and Research & Development.

The activities for each session included a welcome from the owners, a tour of the factory and offices, introductions to staff & their roles and a brief speech on workplace health and safety. We completed the sessions with a thank you and a show bag.

The day was very enjoyable and really helped to show the kids what they will be facing when joining the workforce.
