Dean’s Messagei am pleased to present JMsB’s latest Research Bulletin. Our business school’s rising research profile is growing thanks to our talented and prolific faculty members, who continue to generate innovative, world class business research and attract funding from an assortment of sources.

in the coming months, we will officially launch a new research centre. the Cn Centre for studies in sustainable supply Chain Management, under the directorship of ahmet satir, will provide a platform where JMsB researchers and Cn employees can collaborate on sustainable supply chain management projects.

i would like to take this opportunity to welcome three faculty members who joined us during the period covered by this Research Bulletin: Yu-Ping Chen (Management), elisabetta ipino (accountancy) and Yuan Wang (Finance).

Congratulations to all of the faculty members for the achievements recognized in this issue of the bulletin.

Message FROM the editORi am pleased to present the spring 2013 edition of the JMsB Research Bulletin which covers the research and scholarly activities for the period May to October, 2012. as the listing shows, JMsB researchers have continued to make significant contributions to knowledge-creation and dissemination through publications in top quality peer-reviewed journals and participation in international and national conferences. Many of our researchers have also won accolades for their scholarly contributions.

dr. steven appelbaum was inducted into the Provost’s Circle of distinction in 2012 for his significant accomplishments over a sustained period of time. dr. Zeynep arsel was awarded the sidney J. levy award for the best dissertation article in Consumer Culture theory. in december, dr. anne-Marie Croteau and dr. ulrich Wassmer received the dean’s scholarship awards for 2012. Please join me in congratulating our colleagues for their contributions and recognitions.

the 4th annual graduate Research exposition was held in november. Phd and Msc students from all areas presented their research on a wide variety of topics using elegantly designed posters. the event has grown substantially in recent years, attracting interest from both within Concordia as well as the local business community. Our students have also continued to excel by presenting at prestigious international and national conferences. We also had a number of high profile speakers visit the campus on a regular basis to present their research. Many of these visiting speakers are sponsored by our research centres, endowed chairs and professorships, and i thank each of them for contributing towards enriching the research culture at JMsB.in closing, i thank Yuri Mytko and arlene segal for putting this bulletin together, as well as ashrafee hossain for his assistance with editing the document. i wish you a pleasant and productive summer and look forward to more contributions in future editions of the research bulletin.

Yu-Ping Chen comes to JMsB after having completing his Phd at the sheldon B. lubar school of Business, university of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. he received his master’s degree in human resources and industrial relations at the university of Minnesota and his BBa degree in international business at the national taiwan university.

Yu-Ping’s research focuses on global work experiences (corporate expatriates, self-initiated expatriates and international business travelers), interpersonal relationships at work, work motivation and compensation and benefits. his work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Management, applied Psychology: an international Review, and international Journal of human Resource Management.

elisabetta ipino

elisabetta ipino joined the JMsB department of accountancy after having earned her Phd in economics and management (major in accounting) from the university of Padova. her research interests focus on international accounting, corporate governance, interrelation between countries’ institutional framework and the reporting behaviour of corporations. her research has been presented at the american accounting association (aaa) annual Meeting, the Canadian academic accounting association (Caaa) annual Conference and the european accounting association (eaa) annual Conference.

yuan wang

Yuan Wang joined JMsB after having completed his Phd at the Pennsylvania state university. he has a Ba in computer science from the harbin institute of technology, a master’s degree in computer science from the Beijing institute of technology and an Msc in economics from the university of arizona. Yuan completed an internship at Microsoft Research asia in 2004. his research interests are in empirical asset pricing. he has presented his work at the Financial Management association annual Meeting in 2009, 2010 and 2012, the northern Finance association in 2012 and the Conference on liquidity Risk Management (also 2012). his work has been published in the Journal of Fixed income, decision support systems, and the international Journal of Pattern Recognition and artificial intelligence.
