Research Colloquium: Engineering Ideas towards Sustainable Growth

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) lead the whole nation in celebrating the Development Policy Research Month last September. The theme for this year’s Research month “Effective Regulation for Sustainable Growth” is a call for improving regulatory quality in the country to ensure that our policies and laws are facilitating competition, innovation, productivity and growth.

In line with this, the whole PLM community joined the nationwide event headed by the University Center for Research & Extension Services (UCRES) and the different College Research Committees. Poster presentations and series of Research Colloquia.

The College of Engineering and Technology conducted its Research Colloquium last September 21, 2015 at the Bukod Tanging Bulwagan, Gusaling Katipunan.

The Chairman of the College Research Committee, Engr. Denvert C. Pangayao, delivered the welcoming remarks.

The Research Colloquium was divided into two segments: first is for the paper presentations by CET students; and second is the Research Presentation by the CET faculties and alumni.

The first group of students to present were King Neil A. Antonino and Arnold A. Gamet, 5th year chemical engineering students, with their paper entitled “Liquefaction of Corn Stover and Acid-Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Rice Straws for the Production of Bio-based Chemicals”. This team also got the first place for the poster presentation.

The second group was composed of Allen Patrick C. Canete, Dianner F. Barrozo and Ruby Anne L. Panis, fifth year students from the Civil Engineering Department, with their paper, “Two-Dimensional Analysis Vulnerability Assessment of Public Secondary Buildings in District II of Manila”.

The last group of students to present their paper were Fanella Mae E. Bagalayos and John Paulo T. Santiago, fourth year students from the Information Technology Department. Their paper was entitled “ABAKADAPP: An Android Application in Enhancing the Mother Tongue”. This team also got the second place for the poster presentation.

For the second part of the colloquium, Engr. Denvert C. Pangayao of the Chemical Engineering Departent presented his research paper entitled “Bioleaching of Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Fe from Coal Ash using Acidithiobacillus albertensis”.

It was followed by Engr. Eufemia A. Garcia, OIC – Computer Engineering Department, and Aeron Joseph D. Santos, a 5th year computer engineering student with their research paper entitled “Arduino-Controlled 12V Off-Grid Battery-based Micro Hydro Electric System from Home’s Gutter during Heavy Rain”

Last to present were the alumni of the Computer Science Department, Eleni Kaye Domingo and Patricia Radovan, with their capstone project entitled “An Enhancement of the Knuth Morris Pratt Algorithm applied to Braille Translation”.

Each presentation was followed by a question-and-answer portion with Engr. Elaine G. Mission as the moderator.
