In addition, 7 journal papers, and 1 book chapter submission that I co-authored are currently under review (Sec. 2). In the research fields I work, conference papers may carry substantial weight; all my conference papers were peer-reviewed based on full manuscript. Overwhelming majority of these conferences has acceptance rates below 50% (many of them around 35%). It is worth mentioning that I made these contributions despite the heavy administrative load I had during 2006-2008 (Sec. 4). 1. MOST SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO RESEARCH During the last 6 years, I have worked on various aspects of wireless communications and networking; my research focus has been on radio access networks, multihop and relay networks, and cooperative communications. Here is the list of areas in which I have research interest:

• Radio access networks • Relay/multihop/mesh networks • Cooperative communications • Radio resource management • Distributed antenna systems, radio-over-fibre, micro/pico/femto-cells • Antenna architectures, macro/microdiversity, MIMO • Multiple access, OFDMA, MAC • Routing, scheduling • B4G, 4G, LTE-A, LTE, 802.16, WiMax, 802.11 • Sensor networks • Cognitive radio, spectrum, opportunistic spectrum access • Interference modeling • Network coding • Ultra-reliable communications • Intelligent transportation systems

Publications: During the last 6 years, I have made 27 refereed journal & 77 refereed conference papers, and 2 book chapter publications, as well as 4 patent filings (these are in addition to 15 non-refereed reports and white papers prepared for industry). 4).

Most of my publications are in the areas of radio access networks, multihop and relay networks, and cooperative communications, spanning three layers:

a) Fundamental Dynamics: I co-authored one of the most cited overview papers in the field of multihop and relay networks: [J1] (Sec. 2.1); this paper was one of the ten most popular articles published in all IEEE Communication Society periodicals viewed online through IEEE Xplore in October 2004 (www.comsoc.org/livepubs/topten). [J1] received 482 citations in just 4.5 years (August 2009, Google Scholar); I expect that this paper will pass the 1,000 citation mark in the next three years, and the 2,000 citation mark in the long run. Research Contributions Halim Yanikomeroglu – 16 August 2009 1,000 citation mark in the long run. It is worth mentioning that my former PhD student J. Boyer, who is the first author of [J2], received the Governor General Medal and the University Medal (the highest two recognitions at Carleton) for his outstanding doctoral thesis during the Fall 2007 convocation. J. Boyer’s exceptional PhD thesis and research achievements were also featured in the Ottawa Citizen (03 November 2007) as well as in campus newspapers.

c) Multiple Access Layer: One of the first Radio Resource Management (RRM) studies in multihop networks were reported in [C6] and in an earlier conference paper of the same co-authors. Although the RRM sub-field in multihop networks has advanced substantially in the last five years, [C6] and the earlier paper continue receiving citations (129 citations, August 2009, Google Scholar).

Research Group: I have an active research group with 2 PDFs + 10 PhD students + 4 MASc students + undergraduate students + visiting researchers; this is one of the largest (if not the largest) research groups at Carleton University. Two of my former PDFs became faculty members, one of my former PhD students became Senior Vice President of Engineering in a California-based international IT company (ActivIdentity). My other former graduate students are employed by the Canadian and international IT sector (such as RIM, Microsoft, Nortel, Soma, Aselsan, and start-ups) as well as by the Canadian Government. Several of my graduate students either received or were nominated for university level medals for their outstanding theses.

Collaborations: I have engaged in several research collaborations with industry and academia. • My research is currently funded by Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT, Korea),

Huawei Technologies (China), Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), and Carleton University. My research group is the only academic partner of Huawei Technologies (China) in Canada. I applyied for an ORF-RE (Ontario Research Fund – Research Excellence) grant in partnership with Huawei Technologies. This is a 5-year project with a total budget of $3,000,000. My research collaboration with Samsung (Korea) will be entering its 3rd year in Fall 2009. I have also received funding from Nortel Networks since 2000 until the company declared bankruptcy in January 2009. In the past, I have received substantial funding from CITR (Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research), CITO (Communications and Information Technology Ontario), and NCIT (National Capital Institute of Technology) as well.

• World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF) was established in 2001 mainly by European research entities to coordinate the pre-standardization research efforts and develop a harmonized worldwide view towards the beyond 3rd generation wireless networks. I and two others colleagues at Carleton received an NSERC IOF (Int’l Opportunities Fund) grant to participate in WWRF; as a result, in 2002 Carleton became the first North American university to join WWRF. Since then I have actively participated in WWRF including by making several presentations at WWRF meetings and by contributing to a number of white papers; our involvement in WWRF resulted in international visibility for my research. A recent WWRF paper I wrote on broadband wireless connectivity ([C63]) is being translated to Portuguese to be published in RTI, a Brazilian monthly magazine on telecommunications.

• I, along with two other colleagues at Carleton, were involved in the trans-European integrated

project WINNER (Wireless World Initiative New Radio) funded by the European Union as a 6th framework program project. WINNER’s main goal was to contribute to the developments towards the next generation (often called 4G) wireless networks. This 4-year project (ended on 31 December 2007) was the largest of its kind in the world with 48 partners; Carleton was one of the three non-European partners (the only North American partner). Our funding has been from an NSERC Special Research Opportunities grant ($616,000 over 40 months) which has been one of the largest SRO grants awarded by NSERC. My involvement in the WINNER project has been on relay-based wireless network architectures and radio resource management; this involvement resulted in further international visibility for my research.

Research Contributions Halim Yanikomeroglu – 16 August 2009

• I established research collaborations with a high number academic research groups around the world as outlined in Sec. 3.1. In Fall 2008, I became an adjunct research professor at King Saud University’s (KSU) Advanced Technology Research Center (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia); this position is supported by Saudi Telecom Company (STC). I have submitted two proposals to STC prepared jointly with KSU co-investigators (the competition results are expected to be announced in Summer 2009).

• I am in the process of establishing research ties with Turkcell, the largest wireless operator in

Turkey. Turkcell is setting up an R&D Centre in Istanbul and is already part of a number of European Union 7th framework program projects. I have started talks with Turkcell towards developing a research proposal. I am also trying to establish research ties with two universities in Qatar (Qatar University and Texas A & M University in Qatar) towards developing a research proposal to be submitted to the Qatar National Research Fund’s National Priorities Research Program.

Professional Service to the Research Community: I have served as the Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary, in IEEE’s highly influential Technical Committee on Personal Communications (TCPC) during 2001–2006 (Sec. 3.6). This committee organizes wireless symposia in the leading IEEE communications conferences, it also supports a high number of international and regional conferences, symposia, and workshops around the world. As such, during my 6-year tenure as an Executive Member of TCPC, I have contributed to the organization of over 50 events worldwide (in addition to 44 events that have served as a Technical Program Committee member since 2003 as outlined in Sec. 3). I have also been involved in the organization of world’s leading wireless conference, IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, WCNC, in various capacities (Sec. 3.5), including being the Technical Program Co-Chair of IEEE WCNC 2004 held in Atlanta, USA, and the Technical Program Chair of IEEE WCNC 2008 held in Las Vegas during 31 March – 3 April 2008. Over 1200 papers were submitted to IEEE WCNC 2008; a total of 4,000 reviews have been arranged for these papers. I will also have the honor to serve as the General Co-Chair of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2010 which will be held in Ottawa during 6 – 9 September 2010; around 1,000 researchers, engineers, and scientists from around the world are expected to attend this major international event. Awards and Expert Recognition: My research towards wireless broadband connectivity has been featured in Globe & Mail (Canada’s largest national newspaper) with the headline “Hello? It’s the future calling” on 24 March 2009. This news item was quoted in a high number of technology websites and blogs around the world. The awards I received include the followings:

• Carleton University Research Achievement Award 2009

• Carleton University Students Choice Teaching Award 2001 I served on the Editorial Boards of a number of journals, including the world’s most authoritative journal in my area, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (I had to resign from this duty when I assumed a labor-intensive administrative duty in my Department as explained in Sec. 4). I have been invited as an External Examiner in PhD defences internationally, as a reviewer for promotion and tenure application dossiers in other universities, for funding agencies in other countries, for publishing companies, and for preparing start-up due diligence reports for the Business Development Bank of Canada.

3.6 Professional Service I have been an Officer of the IEEE Technical Committee on Personal Communications (renamed recently: IEEE Wireless Communications Technical Committee) during 2001–2006; I served first as the Secretary, then as the Vice-Chair, and finally as the Chair. During my tenure, TCPC became the largest and the most influential TC (with 650+ members) in IEEE Communications Society. TCPC technically endorses about 15-20 regional and international conferences every year. TCPC also organizes the wireless related symposia in ICCs (International Conference on Communications) and Globecoms (Global Communications Conference) which have been the largest symposia in these conferences in the last many years. As a result, I have been involved directly or indirectly in the organization of a very high number of conferences worldwide during my six-year tenure in TCPC.
