About DIGITAL.CSIC
• Launched in 2008
• Multidisciplinary repository for 120 research centers and institutes + legacy institutes
• Almost 165,000 items (top research outputs types are journal articles, conference contributions, datasets)
• Largest Open Access repository in Spain
• Runs on DSPACE-CRIS v4.3
• Open Science Laboratory
https://digital.csic.es/
Launch and development of data collections
• First datasets collection was created in 2010 (related to drought and climate change)
• Most datasets relate to Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resources, Biology, Humanities, Biomedicine, Marine Sciences
• 11,600 items are datasets (more than 8,300 are Open Access)
• Maps, images, archaeological data, description sheets, surveys, lab notebook data, observational, experimental data…

DIGITAL.CSIC basic information
• RDM policy: http://digital.csic.es/dc/politicas/politicaDatos.jsp
• DIGITAL.CSIC services to comply with funders’ open data policies: http://digital.csic.es/handle/10261/164332
Research data management agenda
• DOIs minting • Data management plans for
projects under H2020 framework and Spain’s Research Plan
• Flexible options to Access (restricted, embargoed, open) and license datasets (Creative Commons and Open Data Commons)
• Description according to standards
• Institutional strategy for long term digital preservation and Open Science
Main incentives to upload research data into DIGITAL.CSIC (from
researchers perspective)
Increase visibility DOIs Compliance with
journals data policies
Compliance with funders open data policies
Hosting of heavy files
SOME EXAMPLES OF TYPES OF OPEN DATA AT DIGITAL.CSIC
Routes to deposit research data
AUTOMATED UPLOADS
• Managed by the repository’s administrators
• Batch import of metadata and associated files (datasets)
• Work intensive phase prior to import: data structure, file renaming, metadata crosswalks and enrichment
• The data are often the result of finalized, long term projects
MANUAL DEPOSITS
• Managed by the repository’s administrators, libraries or researchers
• Generally speaking, long tail of research (1 or 2 files, not so large) and linked to journals articles
Datasets description • Template based on DataCite schema
(MEMBER OF DATACITE METADATA SCHEMA WORKING GROUP
SINCE SEPTEMBER 2017)
• Metadata in English
• Strong recommendation to describe the data as fully as possible, not simply upload the files
• Good metadata help discovery, citation and reuse
• Include information about reuse conditions, methodology/software used, technical requirements to visualize and reproduce
• Citation of associated publication/s
• Version of the dataset if more than one
• File naming and consistency
• Readme file

Upgrading skills and developing new services
DIGITAL.CSIC TRAINING
AND SUPPORT
Training of selected tools to manage and visualize data
DOI for other non traditional
outputs
Tool to comply with journals data sharing
policies
• Preprints and reports
• Software • Open Lab
Notebooks
Datasets ready for EPOS
• 4 collections of datasets
• Manual uploads to test the validity of the metadata model (based on GFZ metadata editor), automation soon
• Extension of Dublin Core Qualified metadata schema
• Types of ICTJA datasets available: embargoed and open Access; current and legacy datasets
