From the Director’s Desk Greetings from NIT Jalandhar! Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has established thirty one National Institute of Technologies to impart quality technical education, to pursue research activities in niche areas of technology, to innovate, to create new knowledge. Dr B R Ambedkar, National Institute of Technology is one of the premier NITs in the country and is known for imparting Quality Technical Education, to take up research in frontier areas of technology and to create new knowledge. Our main focus has been quality. I would like to bring to your knowledge the latest developments that has taken place in the institute in this regard.

The faculty is the backbone of any institute and in last three years efforts have been made to attract quality faculty. More than 110 faculty members have been recruited so far in various departments in last couple of years and the total faculty strength has increased more than double in three years.

We have introduced two new B Tech programmes and five new M Tech programmes. NIT Jalandhar offers research (PhD) in sixteen major disciplines of Engineering, Science, Humanities and Management. We offer eleven UG programmes with intake of 1137 per year (Initial intake of 100 UG students), fourteen M Tech programmes with intake of 540 per year (started in 2006 with intake of 100 students). This year institute has enrolled 124 research scholars in different departments. The publication data of the faculty since 2017 has shown an exponential growth in the number and quality of papers published in reputed national and international journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science and SCI. The number of publications in the year 2017, 2018 and 2019 is 230, 430 and 383, respectively.

Recently, the major developments have been accreditation of all UG programmes, liberal funding for establishment of research laboratories, liberal funding for construction of new infrastructure, redesigning of campus master plan, completion of four major buildings, providing funds for research to faculty and students under TEQIP-III grant. There has been great thrust to increase internal revenue generation. The major steps taken for this is introduction of self sponsored seats in M Tech programmes, consultancy, introduction of minor degree concept, introduction of PG diploma and summer internship. It is expected that internal revenue generation will increase by at least 2 crores per year through these initiatives. A lot of emphasis has been given to collaborate in recent past. The collaborations have been both National and International. In the recent years, we have collaborated with institutions like IIT Mandi, NIT Delhi in India and with University of Florence, Italy, France, at international level. We share research facilities with our collaborators to bring the best quality research. Further we are in process of collaborating with IIT Mumbai, University of Missouri, Kansas, USA and few other international Universities.

The institute is not only imparting quality technical education & research to the students but also inculcate entrepreneur skills amongst the students. For this purpose the institute has established Technology Business Incubation Centre at the total cost of Rs. 2.71 crores grant received from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and has also established Space Technology Incubation Centre in liaison with ISRO. Institute has received 21 proposals from incubatees for starting new start-ups and has also received 12 proposals for Space Technology Business Incubation Centre.

Together with our quality faculty, research scholars and staff we are producing quality research and new knowledge and I feel privileged to work with this committed community of scholars and practitioners.

This maiden attempt of bringing the R & D newsletter of the institute is a step towards increasing the outreach of the institute. We have initiated allocation of grants to the students of the institute under TEQIP-III to inculcate research culture among them. With the efforts of our faculty and students the day is not far when NIT Jalandhar will be world known hub of research in northern India. I would like to acknowledge the support and guidance of Secretary MHRD Sh R Subrahmanyam, IAS and Additional Secretary Sh S S Sandhu, IAS for improving quality of teaching-learning and research at the institute.

    Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!

    Professor Lalit Kumar Awasthi Director

  • Dr B R Ambedkar NIT Jalandhar over the years has witnessed noteworthy growth in terms of strength and stature. In addition to introduction of innovative practices in teaching and learning processes, an array of initiatives have been launched in the area of research and development activities. These initiatives have yielded encouraging results in terms of award of sponsored research projects from different funding agencies. An ecosystem is being developed to engage UG students in research activities and connecting PhD scholars with related R&D organizations, industries and laboratories.

We are pleased to present the inaugural issue of the R&D Newsletter highlighting research activities undertaken and accomplished during the academic session 2018-19. It focuses on sponsored research projects, research publications, IPR, PhD degrees awarded, consultancy, short term courses and conferences organized.

I keenly look forward to receiving your feedback and suggestions to grow and diversify our R&D activities.

The present B.Tech programme in Biotechnology started in year 2007 with an objective in providing education and training facilities, to carry out application oriented research, development of in house technologies and to promote consultancy services in various areas of biotechnology. In addition to B.Tech programme with current intake of 57 students, the Department has started offering Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Biotechnology from current academic year i.e. 2019 with intake of 34 students which include 17 self-sponsored seats. The full time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in different research areas were started in the year 2009.

The Institute has a vision to develop a “Centre of Excellence” in Biotechnology for carrying out basic research in various fields. The field of biotechnology is ever emerging and highly interdisciplinary in nature. The present programme aims to provide a strong support to the industry as well as for the research activities in emerging areas of Bioprocess Engineering, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Downstream Processing, Genetic Engineering, Immunotechnology, Metabolic Engineering, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Protein Engineering through hands on research facilities.

The department has various laboratories which are well equipped with basic and sophisticated analytical instruments such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), COD incubator, BOD incubators, shaker incubators, Fermenters of 3L and 5L capacity, Autoclave, pH meter, weighing balance, Magnetic stirrer with hot plate, Refrig
