ABOUT THE RESEARCH GROUP

The research group Healthy Lifestyle in a Supporting Environment aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among young people between the ages of 2 to 24 in The Hague region. Together with students, lecturers, and professionals, the research group strives to develop, implement and evaluate innovative products, programmes and services in the social, physical and digital environment to encourage young people to improve their physical activity and dietary behaviours.

Mission and objectives

Promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people (ages 2 to 24) in The Hague region by: ● conducting practice-oriented research aimed at developing, evaluating and implementing innovative products,

programmes and services in the social, physical and digital environment of young people in order to improve their physical activity and dietary behaviours;

● conducting practice-oriented research as a component of providing training to the professionals of the future; ● actively disseminating and applying knowledge from practice-oriented research within professional practice,

education and society in general.

In 2018, the research group was part of the research platform Quality of Life: People and Technology.

Objective The objective of the research programme Healthy School of the Future is to promote and maintain a healthy lifestyle among young people between the ages of 2 to 24 in The Hague region by developing, evaluating and implementing products and programmes in the school environment focusing on:

● Encouraging physical activity;● Reducing sedentary behaviour;● Encouraging healthy food choices.

HEALTHY SCHOOL PROJECTS

Healthy by DesignOBJECTIVE The development and evaluation of a lifestyle

intervention – implemented by lower secondary education students for lower secondary education students – that is aimed at healthy eating and getting more exercise. This includes sport classes, fitness days, coaching, classes on nutrition and a social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram.

Healthy food choices as a social norm

OBJECTIVE This project entailed the development of two apps for lower secondary education students that centre on different motivators in order to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The ‘Until Monday’ app relies on the idea of being fit for the weekend, while the ‘Wingman’ app encourages muscle development.

Movement-based learning for toddlers

OBJECTIVE Evaluation of the Springlab activity floor, an interactive projection system that helps pedagogical staff get started with movement-based learning for toddlers through exergames and learning games that are projected on the floor. Exercise, play, discovery, social interaction and learning are combined in an entirely new form of learning experience.

Gym of the Future

RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

ObjectiveThe objective of the research programme Gym of the Future is to promote physical literacy among youth between the ages of 2 to 18 in The Hague region by developing, evaluating and implementing products and programmes in and around the physical education setting focusing on:

● Knowledge and understanding to maintain physical activity at an individually appropriate level, throughout life; ● Physical competence, including fundamental movement skills; ● Motivation to willingly participate in physical activity independently; ● Confidence in the ability to move and be active; ● Lifelong physical activity.

Social exertion interfaces

OBJECTIVE To develop and evaluate spatial augmented reality applications in the (semi-)public space in order to promote social interaction and physical activity among young people.

MQ ScanOBJECTIVE The MQ Scan was developed to gain more insight into motor competence and development among children.

Doctoral candidates Within the research group, Danica Mast and Liset Schrijvers have received a pre-doctoral grant, Joris Hoeboer was awarded an NWO doctoral grant and Annemarie de Witte obtained her doctorate in 2018. Joris Hoeboer was also nominated for the NRO Connection Award for his work developing the MQ Scan. The scan enables Physical Education teachers to gain more insight into children’s motor skills in less than a minute.

MQ ScanThe MQ Scan was developed to gain more insight into motor competence and development among children. The scan is a motor competence assessment tool that can provide Physical Education teachers with a clear picture of a children’s motor skills within one minute. About 30,000 primary school pupils are tested annually.
