PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE

Entrepreneurship Cluster, Edinburg Campus Coordinator, 2007 – present

The purpose of the cluster is to create a world class entrepreneurship program at UTRGV.

Since its creation the Cluster is responsible for increasing the quantity and quality of

entrepreneurship classes offered at the University, forming a student organization dedicated

to promoting entrepreneurship (the Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization), sponsoring

annual Great Idea and Business Plan Competitions, co-sponsoring the FYI Contest for first

year students, obtaining a contract with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to

develop the curriculum and serve as instructors for their youth entrepreneurship program

which has resulted in $225,000 flowing to the University over the life of the contract,

creating the Club at Cimarron/UTPA Mentors Program, facilitating the startup and operation

with community members of Tech Tuesday (www.techtuesdays.co), offering youth

entrepreneurship workshops for high school students in partnership with Idea Public Schools,

and engaging diverse constituencies both at UTRGV and in the community on projects

promoting economic and social development in the Rio Grande Valley.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE (selected classes)

MGMT 4356: Foundations of Entrepreneurship - This is an undergraduate class focusing on

entrepreneurship and the skills needed to start and grow successful ventures.

MGMT 4351: Entrepreneurship in the Border Corridor - This class is a joint venture between

UTPA and UTSA. The goal is to provide high potential students specialized information on

the opportunities available and the skill set needed to successfully pursue business

opportunities in the region running from San Antonio in the north, through the Rio Grande

Valley, and to Monterrey/Saltillo.

MGMT 6301: Principles of Management - This course is a fully online class designed to

introduce incoming masters students who do not have an undergraduate degree in business to

the management field.

MGMT 6332: Technology Commercialization - This course is designed to provide masters

students a solid foundation in technology commercialization. As part of the course students

gain experience in reviewing early stage technologies, identifying potential technology –

product – market linkages, evaluating these linkages for commercialization potential, and

developing a commercialization plan.

MGMT 6335: New Venture Creation - This course examines the critical factors involved in

initiating and managing new growth-oriented ventures. Topics such as the venture creation

process, the identification and evaluation of opportunities, new venture strategies and

financing, legal and tax considerations, and other key aspects of the entrepreneurial process

are explored.

MGMT 4399: Business Consulting - This course is designed to provide high potential

students the opportunity to working with entrepreneurial companies in the Valley on specific

projects.

A Presidential appointment, the faculty athletics representative (FAR) is responsible for

ensuring academic integrity, student athletic welfare, and NCAA/institutional compliance in

the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The FAR reports to the President and the

Faculty Senate. The primary purpose of the Athletics Council is to facilitate the

implementation of recommendations for improvement that emerge from the NCAA

certification process.

The 2007 - 2008 Senate successfully revised more than 20 Handbook of Operating

Procedures policies. This included revisions to existing tenure, promotion, and post-tenure

policies. Furthermore, the Faculty Senate leadership worked with the University Curriculum

Committee to successfully pass a reduction in the University’s general education

requirements from 48 to 43 credit hours. I served as member of the President’s Council,
