Dear Friends, We are nearly halfway through another year—and have celebrated two major milestones: our 36th anniversary of Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory and the 35th year of our Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP). We are most pleased to have had 290 students from 43 colleges/ universities be a part of our Wood Hudson family! The UREP students this year have been working in the labs on cancer research for breast, ovarian, bladder and gastric. We had 6 students in our Spring semester, have 10 students in our Summer term, and anticipate 7 students in the Fall semester. We also have welcomed Dr. Zac Taylor, professor from Thomas More College, to be a summer mentor for our students. All are helping to continue our work towards the Conquest of Cancer Through Research. We have completed our 12th year participating in the Cincinnati Flying Pig and are planning our 17th FTCC Car Show Benefit set for August 12. All these things require support—of time, talent and gifts. We ask for your continued support throughout the year. We are truly grateful to our many supporters who make our research possible. Local Research—Global Impact

Dr. Julia Carter and Dr. Larry Douglass attended the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR)’s Annual

Meeting in Washington, D.C., April 1-5, 2017. This meeting of over 21,000 scientists from 80 countries was the largest in AACR

history. The mission of this annual meeting is to highlight the best in cancer science and medicine from institutions all over the

world. This year, Dr. Douglass and Dr. Carter presented new research from Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratories.

Evidence for WT1 as a Potential Target for Immunotherapy of Lethal Ovarian Cancer presents a new and innovative way to

identify ovarian cancer patients eligible for immunologic therapy approaches. This research is the culmination of efforts from Dr.

Carter, Dr. Deddens, Gretchen Mueller, Grant Lewis, Mariah Dooley, Dr. Pemberton, and Dr. Douglass, and is in the process of

being prepared for publication. This project was supported by a grant from The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and

gifts to the Wood Hudson Memorial Fund.

Michelle Robillard and Molly Frydl both presented their research at the Xavier Senior Thesis Presentations in December

2016. Michelle presented her report, Cell Proliferation in Bladder Cancers Arising in Smokers versus Non-Smokers. Molly

presented her report, Cell Proliferation as a Poor Prognostic Indicator of Survival in Diffuse and Intestinal Type Gastric and

Gastroesophageal Cancers.

Maria Rechtin presented her research Preliminary Investigation of Nicotine on Urinary Bladder Cancer Cell Lines at the

Butler Undergraduate Research Symposium in April 2017.

Taylor Schnebelt presented her research Preliminary Investigation of Nicotine on Urinary Bladder Cancer Cell Lines at the

Xavier Senior Thesis Presentation in May 2017.

Kyle Damen presented his research, The Effect of Nicotine Exposure on Bladder Cancer Cell Lines at the Celebration of

This spring Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory celebrated their involvement in

the Cincinnati Flying Pig Events for the 12th year running! This event helps raise the funds to

support our Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP). This program has enabled 290

students to work alongside the world-class WHCRL scientists in collaborative biomedical

research. This environment provides support and training to the next generation

of scientists, physicians, medical personnel, and great minds! One of these

students, Kyle Damen, participated in the Flying Pig 10K this year, placing 4th

out of 77 in his age group and 47th out of over 4000 runners overall! We would

like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped us achieve success this

year, whether by donating time running, acting as a sponsor, purchasing raffle

tickets, or donating money directly to the cause. With your help, we were able

to raise nearly $20,000 — an amazing feat! We look forward to having you on

our team again next year; time to start training!

Play it safe this summer and always use a high-SPF sunscreen! By simply doing this you reduce your risk of developing

skin cancer or melanoma within your lifetime. Ultraviolet rays from both the sun and tanning lamps can also cause age

spots, eye problems, wrinkles and even weaken your immune system.

Here are a few other ways to protect yourself from the summer sun:

Wear a hat, Wear UV blocking sunglasses, Reapply sunscreen often, Stay in the shade,

Use extra caution at high altitudes, Use caution when near reflective surfaces, Wear proper clothing.

Toyota’s Volunteers In Place Program Gives $1,500 Gift!

Employees of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) believe in giving back to the communities where they live and work. Each year, TMMK honors their employees for their service to the community through the Volunteers in Place Program. Mr. David Burke, a Toyota employee and a supporter of WHCRL, was selected as one of the five finalists for 2016. He named Wood Hudson as his award recipient organization. The Recognition Dinner was held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 at Malone’s Prime in Lexington, KY. Dr. Julia Carter and Georgia Kinman, representing Wood Hudson, were invited to attend this event to honor Mr. Burke and the other finalists. Each Honoree gave a brief description of the organization(s), their involvement and the amount of time volunteered. Mr. Wil James, President of TMMK, personally thanked the Honorees for their community service. He

commended them on the positive impact that their donated time and talent is making in their community. Mr. Burke was presented with a check for $1,500 for his community involvement. He then presented the check to Dr. Julia Carter for the Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP) at Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory. The Lab would like to thank TMMK and Mr. David Burke for the generous gift of $1,500 and for inviting Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory to be a part of the Volunteers in Place Program for 2016.

Welcome to Dr. Zachary Taylor!

Different ways to support Wood Hudson in it’s Conquest of Cancer

This summer we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Zachary Taylor to our research staff as a Visiting Scientist. Dr. Taylor is working closely with the Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP) students, mentoring them in their research experiences this summer. In addition to this he is continuing the work of Brian Fagel and Dr. Tim Cummins reported in the last newsletter, turning the basement of the Richard T. Combs Memorial Research Building into a fully functional lab space. Dr. Taylor comes to us from Thomas Moore College where he is as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Here he has continued a standard of excellent work in genetics and molecular biology. Prior to this, he received his Doctoral degree from Miami

University, after working in industry for several years with Syntonix Pharmaceuticals, Dyax Corporation and Cubist Pharmaceuticals. We are excited to see the results his expertise and mentorship will bring to the lab. Since coming to Wood Hudson in May, Dr. Taylor and the students he is mentoring are studying the biochemistry and genetics of human breast cancer cells grown under laboratory conditions. One of the students under Dr. Taylor’s mentorship is Carly Taylor (no relation) from Western Kentucky University– The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science. The Gatton Academy was founded in 2007 to provide exceptional students from the Commonwealth and beyond the chance to jumpstart their careers in the math and science fields with a residential program, earning the students 60 hours of college credits prior to high school graduation. Since its founding, we have had a wonderful relationship with The Gatton Academy, and we have been fortunate to have a student representing The Gatton Academy in the UREP nearly every summer. This year, we would like to extend our congratulations to The Gatton Academy as they celebrate their 10th Anniversary. We look forward to maintaining our relationship and working with the students for years to come!

Dr. Julia Carter with Mr. Wil James, President of TMMK, and Mr. David Burke, Toyota Employee and WHCRL Supporter

Mission Statement

Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory, Inc. is a professional, independent, not-for-profit, publicly supported, research

institute dedicated to the discovery of new knowledge regarding the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer.

Because the Laboratory is a not-for-profit enterprise, no organization or individual profits financially from its operation, and

all discoveries resulting from ongoing research are freely given to the scientific and medical community through promptly

reported, peer-reviewed publications.

Wood Hudson approaches the cancer problem three ways:

1. Study of clinical cases and experimental models of cancer to learn new methods of cancer prevention,

diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment

2. Study of environmental causes of cancer, particularly food and drinking water chemicals;

3. Provision of training and “hands-on” research experience for tomorrow’s scientists and physicians

through its Undergraduate Research Education Program (UREP)
