Life Cycle of a GrantKurt McMillen and Bonniejean Zitske - Room 1121 (Auditorium)

Sponsored projects are established when funds are awarded, typically via a grant, to the University of Wisconsin-Madison by external sources in support of research, instruction, training, service, or other scholarly activities. Each grant follows a life cycle that includes creating the funding opportunity, applying, receiving an award, managing the award, and successfully closing out the award. This session will provide an overview of the grant life cycle and touch on the processes, people, and tools that effectively support and foster research at the University of Wisconsin.

Kurt McMillen is the interim Assistant Director for Grant & Proposal Services in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP). He joined the University in 2010 as a Grant and Contracts Specialist working in RSP. Currently, he is responsible for the strategic leadership and oversight of the Award Acceptance, Proposal Services, and outgoing Subaward Issuance operations within RSP. Kurt is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), and has presented nationally on a wide range of topics. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.

Bonniejean Zitske is the Assistant Director for Research Financial Services at the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. She has been an active member of the UW-Madison community for 20 years and a research administrator for 10 years, working in a department and dean’s office before taking on a leadership role in the central office. She is Chair-Elect of NCURA Region IV, which is a professional organization for research administrators. She is also working on a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Workshops & Speaker BiosIt Doesn’t Have to Be Hard: Networking as a SkillTara Milliken - Room 1227 (Classroom)

The very idea of networking can be intimidating or overwhelming, particularly if it’s not a part of your day-to-day work. What does “networking” entail and where do I start? Is it even possible to network without it feeling slimy? If I already have a job, why do I need to network? Isn’t networking just for people who work in business or are first starting out in their career? Can I network successfully if I’m not a naturally extroverted person? In this interactive session, we’ll discuss these questions, debunk networking myths, share disastrous and successful stories of attempted networking, and identify some of the intentional ways everyone can approach networking as a professional. We’ll discuss why networking is a skill worth building, provide opportunities to practice, and help participants develop a networking plan for beyond the conference.

Tara Milliken is the Experiential Education Coordinator for SuccessWorks at the College of Letters and Science, where she supports undergraduate students in all facets of career development and planning through intentional programming, exploration, and skill-building events and activities. Prior to her current role, Tara worked as a Career Advisor in the Wisconsin School of Business BBA Program. Tara completed a B.A. in English and a B.S. in agricultural and extension education from The Ohio State University, and an M.A. in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University. In 2017, she received the Early Career Excellence in Undergraduate Advising Award from UW-Madison, and in 2018, she was presented with the Commission for Career Services Distinguished Service Award by ACPA. Tara is passionate about creatively tackling new programs and processes, equity and justice in career services work, and helping others better understand and articulate their own values, skills, strengths, and interests.

Finally, you will have the opportunity to use a change model to intentionally navigate others through change. Be prepared to personally reflect and engage in dialogue with colleagues about your situation of change. This session will encourage you to lead others toward embracing a resilient mindset.

Understanding and Developing Career Self-Reliance and ResiliencyLynn Freeman - Room 1231 (Classroom)

“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life...Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.” Steve Jobs, on being fired from Apple in 1984

Career resilience is the ability to adjust to career change as it happens, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks and learn from experiences so you keep moving forward. We benefit from having career resilience when something unexpected happens (like a job loss). We also benefit from career self-reliance, or taking responsibility for our career growth while maintaining commitment to the success of the university. Do you have career resilience and career self-reliance? Join us for this interactive and informative session on what these are, why they are importance, and how to develop them.

Lynn Freeman collects flair, and her favorite button says, ‘Are we going to do this, or just talk about it?’

During her 25+ year career in higher education, Lynn has had the privilege to be in roles centered around her passion: to help people discover, learn and grow. She has worked with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff at Stanford University, Penn State University, Washington State University and University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh.

In 2015, Lynn decided to use her experience and passion in a new way: working to help employees discover, learn and grow, and came to UW-Madison. Lynn is the Director of Talent Development, and is responsible for the Office of Learning & Talent Development (LTD) and the Office of Human Resources Communities of Practice (HR CoP). Talent Development provides low- and no-cost professional and career development opportunities for all employees of UW-Madison.
