In Civil Engineering:Chiedza Dondo Thesis Title: Bayesian Network for spatio-temporal integrated catchment assessment

Chiedza Dondo was born in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe on the 22nd of September 1977. She graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a BSc (Hons) degree in Land Surveying in 2001. The same year, she joined the Geomatics Department at UCT where she graduated in 2004 with an MSc( Eng) degree. She is currently employed at the Council for Geoscience. Chiedza Dondo’s PhD thesis developed a new methodology for spatial and temporal assessment of catchment natural resources under uncertainty. The methodology used Bayesian Networks and Dynamic Bayesian Networks for automatically discovering cause and effect relationships from data. The methodology also provided a framework for integrating socio-economic factors and expert knowledge into decision-making. The resulting relationships were used to assess and predict the impacts of changes in natural resources conditions under different socio-economic and environmental options using scenario and sensitivity analyses. The results provided an improved understanding of the catchment water systems which can inform policy and decision-making.

*Goitseone George Malumbela Thesis Title: Measurable parameters for performance of corroded and repaired RC beams under load

Goitseone Malumbela has a BSc (Eng) from the University of Missouri Rolla and an MSc (Eng) from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a doctoral researcher at UCT in the Department of Civil Engineering from 2005, during which time he undertook research into corrosion performance of reinforced concrete beams. Goitseone Malumbela’s PhD thesis focuses on identifying measurable and useful parameters for structural engineers and asset managers who need to evaluate the deterioration of corroding reinforced concrete structures and to predict their residual load-bearing capacities. The literature is highly contradictory and no reliable parameters have emerged. His work is holistic in that it emulates in-service conditions for beams under sustained load. Parameters that were investigated included corrosion crack widths and longitudinal strains together with their derivatives. The important findings are that corrosion crack widths show the most reliable behaviour with regard to residual load bearing capacity, provided there is an understanding of the relation between corrosion crack patterns and the rate of widening of corrosion cracks. Furthermore, extending the life and enhancing the load-bearing capacity of deteriorated RC structures using the common method of patch repairs can be considerably improved by incorporating FRP repairs.

David William Cattell Thesis Title: A model to distribute mark-up amongst quotation component item prices

David Cattell completed a BSc(QS) degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1982 and began an MSc(QS) in 1983. He was appointed as a Lecturer at Wits in 1984 where he remained until the end of 1987. He left academia to start a software development firm focussed on producing tax software. He worked for IBM SA, but left to pioneer new software to apply lifecycle-costing methodology to the purchase of cars. This led to a book, The SA Guide to Tax-Efficient Cars. David Cattell’s thesis stems from the research that he began in 1983. He has developed an unbalanced bidding model for the optimisation of the item pricing decision by building and civil engineering contractors. Such contractors compete by way of tendering, using unit price based contracts. They compete on the basis of their overall project bids and yet are paid on the basis of these projects’ constituent item prices. Unbalanced bidding entails the pricing of these items so as to optimally improve the contractor’s benefits by way of an uneven distribution of mark-up amongst these items. The research has identified the full array of benefits of item pricing. It has also proposed a new framework by which the various risks from item pricing can be established and quantified. It has then applied Modern Portfolio Theory, the Value-at-Risk methodology and Cumulative Prospect Theory in combination, by which to optimise the contractor’s trade-off between their pursuit of a maximisation of profit relative to a minimisation of risk. The model uses Monte Carlo Simulation incorporating generic algorithms by which to practically identify the item pricing combination that will deliver the quasi-optimised best utility for the contractor. The research has been published as several peer-reviewed papers in leading journals in the USA and UK.
