Prayer in the Psalms

Prayer in the Psalms is portrayed as the heart’s true language

expressed to God. The Psalmist (whether it be David, or others)

seems to be free to express the wide latitude of the heart’s state, from

extreme joy and exultation to extreme pain and angst. This polarity

provides the continuum for the heart’s expression for help, trust,

praise, despair, etc.

Prayer in the Psalms is sometime hard to identify because the

Psalmist may launch into prayer-like language without calling it

“prayer.” It is similar to a heart-like conversation with God. This may

be a significant insight into the very nature of prayer itself. Prayer

may actually be more realistically perceived as heart language in

honest and forthright conversation with God.

According to Psalm 4:1, there is an expectation on the part of

the Psalmist that God will answer prayer. Prayers are prayed

precisely because the Psalmist believes that God will respond. This

petition for God to pay attention to prayers offered is prayed because

the Psalmist knows that there is such a thing as unanswered prayer

((Psalm 35:13). In Psalm 6:9 the composer knows that God has

heard his prayer for mercy and has accepted his prayer. This leaves

the notion that there may be times when prayers are not accepted.

The Psalmist offers this petition: “I call on you, my God, for

you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer (Psalm

17:6). His confidence is unmistakable that God will answer when he

calls. Such confidence lies behind the request to “turn your ear to

me and hear my prayer.” The Psalmist is not afraid to grab Yahweh’s

attention toward his request for an answer.

Thinking about prayer in the Psalms must begin with the

“holy unveiling” of God [Christopher R. Seitz. (2001). “Prayer in the

Old Testament or Hebrew Bible.” In Into God’s Presence: Prayer in the New Testament, pp. 3-22. Edited by Richard N. Longenecker.

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, Company; page 18.] This insight lets

us know that when we look carefully at the prayers in the book of

Psalms, we learn extraordinary things about the nature of God.

Concurrently, when we look at the prayers in the book of Psalms, we

are allowed to “enter into the heart of David himself”(p. 18).

It is amazing to think that when we read and become familiar

with the prayers in the Psalms, we come to know our own heart

better, and the heart of God better. Consequently, prayer is not

limited to a catalogue list of items I am ordering from God’s store

room. Rather, prayer becomes the experience by which I come to

know my heart and God’s heart. How beautiful prayer language

becomes!

In Christian love, Curtis

REMEMBER TO PRAY for those

in the Military: Lauren Pratt, Air Force, California; Chris Sadler, Marines, New Orleans; Chris Scott, Air Force, Iraq; Nathan Shaw, Fort Hood, TX; Jay (Lois Hart’s nephew) Afghanistan; Major Ted Wilson (Loretta Rollins’ brother) Chaplin in Air Force, Ohio.

Teaching the Word of God is a great responsibility. It must not be taken lightly or without knowing. “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.”

James 3:1 NIV
