Introduction to DSL What is DSL? DSL (digital subscriber line) allows high-speed data access over a standard phone line, also known as a POTS (plain old telephone system) line or a twisted copper pair. Since it works over existing telephone lines, DSL high-speed Internet access is very affordable, and its speed is ideal for home office applications and multi-player gaming. How much speed can I expect from a DSL line? Nauticom’s 512k residential DSL provides symmetrical download and upload speeds due to the MVL (multiple virtual-line) technology. Distance issues, telephone line conditions, and other factors can affect DSL speeds. Generally, download speeds range from 30k/sec to 60k/sec. How does DSL work? DSL modems use digital coding, allowing as much as 99% more capacity on a normal phone line, without affecting your normal telephone service. This increase in capacity allows you to surf the Internet and talk on the telephone or send a fax - at the same time, without a separate telephone line. What will happen to my normal phone service? Nauticom provides three (3) phone filters, minimizing the possibility of static on your phone line. If you require additional phone filters, please email [email protected] with your request. Telephone system setup variations may affect or be affected by your DSL connection. Will DSL affect other systems connected to my telephone line?

• Home Security Systems –DSL may affect the reliability of your home security system, if the system utilizes the telephone line that your DSL connection runs over. It is always recommended that you test your security system after installing DSL.

• Answering Machines – DSL may affect the quality and/or functionality of your telephone answering machine. A filter placed in-line with your answering machine should eliminate this problem.

• Caller ID – On an unfiltered line, DSL may affect the functionality of your Caller ID System. A filter placed in-line with your caller-id box should eliminate this problem.

• Inside Wiring – Poor quality wiring may affect DSL connectivity and/or quality. • Two/Three Line Telephone Jacks – DSL must be installed on a single line

telephone jack.

• Second/Third Telephone Lines – DSL may cause interference and or quality issues on multiple telephone lines. Typically any interference can be resolved with in-line phone filters, three of which are included at the time of installation. Additional filters can be obtained from Nauticom at cost to the customer.

• Centrex Systems – DSL will not work over Digital Centrex Lines, where as Analog Centrex Systems will not affect your DSL connection.

• Key Systems – DSL may affect any system accessed via a keypad, assuming that both the DSL connection and the system use the same telephone line. This problem can be resolved with in-line filters.

What service interruptions could affect my DSL? Domain Name Server (DNS) and mail server issues affect DSL. An isolated problem with the network could affect DSL connectivity. Contact Nauticom Technical Support at 724-933-9853 for assistance and/or repair. Please note that it may take up to 48 hours to repair a DSL issue. However, interruptions in service are rare and typically resolved quickly. What are the advantages of DSL? • No second phone line required: simultaneous Internet and voice/fax capabilities over

DSL MODEM SETUP

Plug a phone line into the telephone wall jack that has been set up for DSL. Plug the other end into the DSL modem port labeled ‘Line’. DO NOT place a filter on the telephone line connected to the ‘Line’ port. Filters should only be attached to the port labeled ‘Phone’.

Plug one end of the ETHERNET line (the red cable that came with your DSL modem) into the network card of your computer. Plug the other end into the ETHERNET port of the DSL modem. Note: the ETHERNET port looks like a normal telephone jack, but is larger in size.

Finally, attach the power supply cord to the modem and plug it into an electrical outlet.

Your DSL modem setup is now complete. Note: you can also plug a fax machine or telephone into the available DSL modem port labeled ‘Phone’.

SETUP FOR WINDOWS 95/98

Double click Network.

Click Start. Select Settings, and click Control Panel.

Select the ‘Configuration tab’. Select the TCP/IP Protocol attached to your Network Card. Click Properties.

Select the ‘IP Address’ tab. Select Specify an IP address. Next to ‘IP Address’ enter your DSL IP address (located on your DSL Account Form, 209.195.xxx.xxx). Next to ‘Subnet Mask’ enter 255.255.255.224

Select the ‘WINS Configuration’ tab. Select Disable WINS Resolution.

Select the ‘Gateway’ tab. Under ‘New gateway’ enter your gateway address (located on your DSL Account Form) Click Add.

Select the ‘DNS Configuration’ tab. Select Enable DNS. Next to ‘Host’, enter your login name (located on your DSL Account Form). Next to ‘Domain’, enter “nauticom.net”. Under ‘DNS Server Search Order’ enter “198.190.226.3” in the top box. Click Add. Again in the top box, enter “198.190.226.30”. Click Add. Under ‘Domain Suffix Search Order’ enter “nauticom.net” in the top box. Click OK. Click OK again. You may be asked to insert your Windows 95/98 CD or diskettes.

Click Start. Select Settings and click Control Panel.

Double-click the Network Control Panel icon.

Select the ‘Adapters’ tab. Make sure your Ethernet card is listed here. If it is not listed, please refer to the original installation documentation, which was included with your network card.

Select the ‘Protocols’ Tab. Verify that the TCP/IP Protocol is installed. If the TCP/IP Protocol is not installed, click Add. If the TCP/IP Protocol is installed proceed to the section “TCP/IP is Installed”.

Select TCP/IP Protocol. Click OK.

Select the ‘WINS Address’ tab. The only option that should be selected is Enable LMHOSTS Lookup.

Select the ‘Routing’ tab. Make sure ‘Enable IP Forwarding’ is not checked. Click OK. (Note: if a window appears stating “At least one network must have a WINS Address. Do you want to continue?”, select Yes. A WINS server address is not necessary)

WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL SETUP

Double click Local Area Connection.

Click Start. Select Settings and click Network and Dial-up Connections .

Click Properties.

Verify that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is installed. If the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not installed, click Install. If the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is installed proceed to the section “TCP/IP is Installed”.

Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click OK.

Select Use the following IP address. Next to ‘IP Address’ enter your DSL IP address (located on your DSL Account Form, 209.195.xxx.xxx). Next to ‘Subnet Mask’ enter 255.255.255.224 Next to ‘Default Gateway’ enter your gateway address (located on your DSL Account Form). Select Use the following DNS server addresses. Next to ‘Preferred DNS server’ enter “198.190.226.3”. Next to ‘Alternate DNS server’ enter “198.190.226.30”. Click OK. Click Close. Close ‘Network and Dial-up Connections’.

SETUP FOR MACINTOSH (OS 8.0 AND HIGHER)

Select the Apple menu. Click Control Panels.

Select TCP/IP.

The TCP/IP Control Panel:

• Next to ‘Connect Via’ select Ethernet.

• Next to ‘Configure’ select Manually.

• Next to ‘IP Address’ enter your DSL IP address (located on your DSL Account Form, 209.195.xxx.xxx).

• Next to ‘Subnet Mask’ enter “255.255.255.224”

• Next to ‘Router Address’ enter your gateway address (located on your

DSL Account Form).

• Next to ‘Name server addr.’ enter “198.190.226.3” and hit return. Enter “198.190.226.30”.

• Under ‘Search Domains’ enter “nauticom.net” and hit return. Enter

“nauticom.net” again.

• Close the TCP/IP window. Click Save Changes.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE No LINE light? Check all of your phone line connections. Unplug the power supply to the modem, leaving it unplugged for a full five (5) minutes. Plug the power in after five (5) minutes has elapsed. If the LINE light does not come on within two (2) minutes, please contact Nauticom Technical Support. Filters should NOT be placed between the DSL modem and the wall jack. Do not run the telephone line into a surge protector or use any type of line splitter, as these will affect the DSL connection. No Ethernet Light? Check the Ethernet cable to ensure that it is plugged in. If this does not correct the problem, contact the manufacturer of your computer or network card for instructions on reinstalling your network card drivers. Be sure to inform the service representative that you have a DSL connection. Alarm light on? Please contact Nauticom Technical Support. An alarm light may indicate that the DSL modem needs replaced.
