Residential Rehabilitation is a comprehensive and intensive course of interdisciplinary rehabilitation to fast-track patients to help reach their goals. Our team of Physiotherapists, Prosthetists, Orthotists and Technicians are on-site so all patient needs can be met swiftly and any alterations can be made over the course of their stay.

Residential RehabilitationSpecialist Programme

Early intervention can help the patient return as near as possible to their pre-amputation level of independence, minimising the risk of contractures in the joints and help restore confidence following the life changing event that they have gone through.

Each course is tailor-made to an individual to help them achieve the most out of their prosthesis. This can either be from the beginning of their prosthetic journey or at any point during a patient’s life.

Other programmes can be formulated to increase strength, endurance, improve stability, confidence or help patients to overcome bad habits that they may have adopted over time.

Most residential programmes will be spread over five days and are based out of both our full time clinics (Midlands or Ringwood). The programmes will consist of:

A FULL AND COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT The patient will be given a full and comprehensive prosthetic assessment including cast and measurements for a new, temporary prosthetic socket (for use when required). After this they will be fitted with the required prosthetic components which will be tailored and adjusted to their needs by a Dorset Orthopaedic clinician. The patient will be continually monitored throughout their stay.

A personalised treatment plan will be implemented from our clinical experts to include the conditioning of a patient’s prosthetic rehabilitation with strength and core training to help improve stability.

A typical week would consist of a full head-to-toe musculoskeletal and prosthetic assessment, with identification of problem areas and areas for development to work on throughout the stay.

The day is broken down into sections to work on different areas of rehabilitation. We use a combination of manual therapy to help keep all joints and muscles mobile and fully functional.

Hydrotherapy is used to enhance neuromuscular control for walking or running and to improve cardiovascular fitness.

Electrical stimulation is used to improve muscle activation, tone and aid in the strengthening process.

“My suitability for traditional sockets was far from great, although I did push myself and have a great quality of life, achieve some great life challenges, marry a beautiful woman and have fantastic children, my mobility was deteriorating and I was becoming more and more reliant on my wheelchair.

Thanks to Osseo, I am able to see a bright future again and I’m already thinking of new challenges ahead.’’

Nineteen days post-op our patient flew back to the UK and had three weeks residential rehab with us. We managed the careful loading protocol to get him back on his feet. Rehab concentrated on core exercises, lower leg strength gains and cardiovascular fitness. Building muscle was done with a combination of electrical stimulation and lower limb exercises which assisted with muscle bulk.

By the end of week three he was walking around on crutches, out in the sunshine and enjoying the freedom of no sockets.

Real LifeStories

Patient’s storyAfter a road traffic accident our patient always struggled with sockets and was the first bi-lateral, below knee amputee to come back from Osseointergration surgery in Australia to be rehabbed in the UK.

Our patient came for residential rehab for five days in three week blocks which were spread over a few months. During the first week she trialled the Kenevo microprocessor knee and subsequently bought the knee and spent the next two weeks with us using her own Kenevo.

We did a mix of hydrotherapy, manual therapy and soft tissue work. The other knee and ankle had some swelling in them so we iced these daily and had compression sessions to reduce the discomfort and effusion. Over the three weeks, gait re-education was focused on building confidence and our patient eventually got from between parallel bars to no sticks at all.

We used the Kenevo A to C settings to slowly increase the mobility and freedom of the knee as she gained confidence. We were also able to teach her daughter how to help with rehab exercises and what to look out for with bad habits.

Our patient now has the confidence to walk about, go in the swimming pool on holiday and best of all, has the freedom to pick her grandchildren up from school.

Patient’s storyFollowing a knee replacement that went wrong our patient, an above knee amputee, had been mainly wheelchair based due to confidence issues with her current prosthesis.
