Painting “Everyone knew you weren’t supposed to paint over slurs written on a Jewish shop front. Such behavior was bad for Germany, and it was bad for the transgressor.”(104).  

Hiding Max “Do you still play the accordion ? Liesel’s papa walked to the front door and opened it”(185).

Liesel vs. Nazis

Three situations are when: Liesel steals a book from the fire

Liesel tells Hans and Rosa that the Nazis are checking basements

Follows Rudy when he spreads the pieces of bread on the street

Situation One “Three books.” Liesel spoke softly and she looked at the backs of the men. (119)

Situation Two “Papa.” “Don’t talk.” The party, she whispered. Papa stopped. He fought off the urge to open the door and look up the street. “They’re checking basements to make shelters”(342).  

Situation Three“Take a handful.” “I’m not sure this is a good idea.” “Your papa did.” “If we’re fast, we won’t get caught.” “So move it, Saumensch” (440).
