THRASS is a phonetics teaching tool that makes a paradigm shift in the teaching of English. It uses a phonographic, multisensory approach, complemented by an analogous learning model that makes reading and spelling acquisition much simpler, faster and totally sustainable, compared to conventional ‘phonic’ approaches. As a classroom strategy THRASS is fun, systematic, explicit and linguistically correct.

The THRASS pedagogy (along with the THRASS charts and accompanying teaching resources), has been highly effective in assisting teachers, schools and learning institutions in Australia since 1996. THRASS is now the most widely used and recognised teacher reference tool for teaching the phonographics and orthography of English.

EXCEED ACARA BENCHMARKS USING AN EVIDENCE-BASED PHONOGRAPHIC APPROACH

The THRASS Institute provides teachers with the tools, strategies and subject knowledge to explicitly teach the phonographic code of English as required by ACARA.

It provides a cost effective whole-school literacy model that is totally sustainable from foundation onwards. THRASS can be used by teachers, education aides, speech pathologists, home tutors and parents.

The THRASS Institute (Australasia & Canada) is an Australian company that has developed a unique pedagogy for the teaching of literacy, marketed as THRASS® – an acronym for Teaching, Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills.

THRASS® PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

THRASS training provides teachers with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to explicitly teach literacy from the earliest building blocks to the more advanced tasks.

The THRASS Institute provides three levels of training in phonetics instruction. A THRASS Accredited Certificate is issued upon completion of each level. Instruction time is recorded with The THRASS Institute.

The THRASS Institute conducts regular training throughout Australasia, in capital cities and major regional centres. Each course type can also be delivered as a whole school in-service.

For schools already using THRASS, our trainers can provide Support, Planning and Demonstration Days and Parent Information Sessions to help ensure the sustainability and success of THRASS within the school.

For more information visit www.thrass.com.au or email [email protected]

FOR EARLY LEARNING, K-12, TESOL, EFOL, ADULT LITERACY AND REMEDIATION IN SPELLING, READING AND WRITING

TEACHING WITH THRASS®

Teachers using THRASS are able to easily cater for multi-level classrooms and support EALD Learners and students with Dyslexia or other Specific Learning Difficulties. It can also be used as an effective adult literacy strategy.

THRASS does not depend on specific intervention with individual learners but focuses on instructing teachers in the technique for whole-class implementation. Rather than being an additional task for an already time-poor teacher to work into a cluttered curriculum, THRASS is designed to form a cornerstone around which the teacher can build their classroom reading and writing activities, spanning all areas of the curriculum.

THRASS does not subscribe exclusively to a workbook model that provides ready-made lesson plans or worksheets for teachers, instead teachers can select from a comprehensive suite of print and digital resources to support and enhance their teaching.

THRASS is a cost-effective, whole-school literacy model that is totally sustainable from foundation onwards. It is most effective as a whole-school approach but can also be used effectively with individuals or small groups.

Successful implementation of THRASS is dependent on the competence, commitment and understanding of the teacher using the pedagogy. As THRASS is a specific approach, professional development is vital.

T-151: THRASS RAPS AND SEQUENCES CD - New Edition, 2012

This new edition features new voiceovers, dual speed tracks for the THRASS

Sequences and new notes. The content of this CD is divided into two types of

tracks - TEACHING tracks (THRASS Sequences, THRASS Phoneme-Grapheme

Sequences) - speech without music and REVISION & CONSOLIDATION tracks

(THRASS Raps, Sound Effects). The tracks should be used in conjunction with the

various THRASSCHARTS, however the Handwriting Sequences should be used

specifically with the THRASS OVERWRITE CHART (T-106). Each of the THRASS

Sequences has a choice of fast or slow voicing for differentiation. It is vital that the

TEACHING TRACKS (speech only) are used extensively prior to progressing to the

REVISION/CONSOLIDATION tracks.

T-13: THRASS TEACHER’S MANUAL

This resource gives a thorough overview of the philosophy and methodology of

the THRASS phonographic approach. It also contains explicit instructions on

how to use the reproducible PDF files in the Handwriting, Reading, Spelling and

Assessment sections of the THRASS RESOURCE KIT (T-101) or its predecessor,

the THRASS RESOURCE FILE (T-01).

T-101: THRASS RESOURCE KIT [replaced the THRASS RESOURCE FILE (T-01) in 2012]

Contains the TEACHER’S MANUAL (T-13),

RAPS AND SEQUENCES CD (T-151) and

THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185).

The THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185),

contains over 350 reproducible pages in

PDF format divided into Reading, Spelling,

Handwriting, Assessment and Charts sections.

HOW TO USE THE CHART

THE NEUTRAL VOWEL BOX (SCHWA)This is the largest box on the chart and the most important for

English speakers. The sound that this box represents is known

commonly as the neutral vowel or the ‘schwa’. It is often not

taught at all or is taught poorly, yet it is the most important speech

sound we make and has the largest number of spelling choices by

far. Without a complete knowledge of this sound and its multiple

spelling choices, a learner’s spelling and reading potential are

severely compromised.

The chart should be displayed permanantly and placed at the optimum height and distance from learners so as to facilitate ‘explicit’ teaching.

If you use the above terminology correctly it is very easy to talk accurately about speech sounds and spelling choices.

‘THRASSING OUT’ WORDS USING THE CHARTUse the chart to read and spell words, including so-called ‘sight words’. Take

for example the word was, which is often referred to as a ‘sight word’. This is

how to teach it using the chart. It is done by using analogy.

Brackets ( ) indicate a speech sound. Apostrophes ‘ ‘ indicate letter names.

The letter ‘w’ makes the speech sound ( w ) like in water.

The letter ‘a’ makes the speech sound ( o ) like in swan.

The letter ‘s’ makes the speech sound ( z ) like in laser.

Apart from ‘word level’ work such as ‘THRASSING OUT’ words,

the chart can be used for much of a teacher’s oral and written

language development, including grammar activities such as

introducing nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs.

Each phoneme box shows one or more spelling choices for a

specific speech sound of English. For example, the graph ‘n’ in

net and the digraphs ‘n’ ’n’ in dinner and ‘k’ ’n’ in knee, can all

represent the same speech sound, ( n ). Not all spelling choices

(including some common ones) are on the chart, as it was

designed primarily as an explicit teaching chart, not just as a

reference chart.

GCA (GRAPHEME CATCH-ALL)The asterisk in each box denotes that there are

or may be, more spelling choices possible for this

particular speech sound.

BASIC TERMINOLOGYPhoneme: A speech sound.

Grapheme: A spelling choice. Either a graph, digraph, trigraph or

quadgraph.

Graph: A one-letter spelling choice e.g. (‘a’ as in cat)

Digraph: A two-letter spelling choice e.g. (‘c’ ’h’ as in school)

Trigraph: A three-letter spelling choice e.g. (‘a’ ‘r’ ‘e’ as in square)

Quadgraph: A four-letter spelling choice e.g. (‘e’ ‘i’ ‘g’ ‘h’ in eight)

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THERE ISN’T A SPELLING CHOICE ON THE CHART?For example, the word said (another so-called sight word). Obviously there is

no correct spelling choice available in the ( e ) phoneme box, that we can use

to represent the ( e ) sound in this word. Therefore write the letters ‘a’ ‘i’ (the

correct spelling choice), next to the asterisk in the ( e ) phoneme box.

A spelling choice that isn’t on the chart, is referred to as a GCA (Grapheme

Catch-All). The same GCA (‘a’ ‘i’) could be used to ‘THRASS OUT’ other words

such as again, where the digraph ‘a’ ‘i’ represents the phoneme ( e ).

The teaching, learning and application of GCAs is integral to THRASS. The

PICTURECHART is the explicit teaching tool that plays a pivotal role in this.

Automatic knowledge of the chart is vital to THRASS teaching.

Note: ( ) brackets indicate speech sounds, ' ' apostrophes indicate letter names

Page 8: Resource Catalogue - THRASS€¦ · Contains the TEACHER’S MANUAL (T-13), RAPS AND SEQUENCES CD (T-151) and THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185). The THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185), contains

T-106: THRASS OVERWRITE CHART - (DESK-SIZE)A4 desk-size flipchart. Font used is Sassoon Primary Infant. Side 1 the

‘TRACE OVER THE LETTERS’ side. Use this side of the chart with the

handwriting tracks on the RAPS AND SEQUENCES CD (T-151). A dot

and arrow on each letter, show the learner where to start the letter and

in which direction to move their pen. The voiceover on the CD mimics

the wording on the chart. Learners overwrite the letters starting at the

dot and following the direction of the arrow.

Side 2 'TRACE OVER THE GRAPHEMES' side. The act of overwriting

the correct grapheme for a word that has been incorrectly spelled,

helps the learner recall the spelling choice and recognise it when

reading. If a letter or letter string is a Grapheme Catch-All or non-

phonographic letter string, learners use the letter-boxes to overwrite

the grapheme. To practise the segmentation and blending of

phonemes in words, learners overwrite the relevant graphemes in the

correct phoneme-boxes. Note: This chart is A4 size.

On one side is a full colour version of the THRASS

PICTURECHART.

On the reverse are both sides of the THRASS OVERWRITE

CHART for use with handwriting. The chart can be placed

on a wall, floor or desktop for group or individual use.

Note: This chart is 42cm wide x 51cm deep.

T-145: THRASS PRONOUNCING ENGLISH - IPA GUIDE (DESK-SIZE)This chart is A4 size.

T-186: THRASS PRONOUNCING ENGLISH - IPA GUIDE (CLASS-SIZE)This chart is 92cm wide x 57cm deep.

The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) is the pronunciation

system used in many English dictionaries. To learn the 44

English phonemes and their international symbols, use the

consonant and vowel phoneme sequences on the RAPS AND

SEQUENCES CD (T-151) in conjunction with this double-sided

A4 size chart. Additionally the chart includes explanations

for linguistics terms such as plosive, fricative, allophone and

diphthong making it a great reference tool for all educators.

T-19: THRASS WORD LEVEL WORKCHART (CLASS-SIZE)This workchart features a focus-box, phoneme-box, word list and segment

list. Work with your learners to practise reading, spelling, writing and word

analogy skills by focusing on words that have the same phoneme - e.g.

fish, coffee, dolphin; blend - e.g. snail, sneeze, snow; grapheme - e.g. chair,

cheese, beach; rhyme - e.g. hair, square, there; rime - e.g. cat, sat, mat.

This chart can be used with both the Reading and Spelling Sections of the

RESOURCE KIT CD (T-101) and the THRASS WORKBOOK (T-173). This chart is 61cm wide x 89cm deep.

Focus Box

Phoneme Box Chart

FOCUS GRAPHEMES1) Use a marker pen to write either the focus grapheme/s, consonant blend, syllable set or onset and rime in the Focus Box. With advanced learners, you may prefer to use IPA symbols instead of letters/graphemes (see the THRASS Pronouncing English Chart, T-145 for IPA symbols).

2) Locate the focus grapheme/s on a class-size Picturechart and/or Graphemechart, then write the grapheme/s in the corresponding phoneme-box/es on the Phoneme Box Chart.

WORD LIST1) Collect focus words. Words can be found in the THRASS Phonics Handbook (T-171) and on the various THRASSCHARTS or in books, dictionaries, rhyming dictionaries and on the internet.

2) Write ten focus words in the Word List.

3) In the Segment List, re-write the focus words according to which aspect of the word you are working on, i.e. either graphemes, consonant blends, syllable sets or onset and rime. For example, if you were working on the graphemes in the word fish, write it as f-i-sh, using a dash to separate the graphemes.

GRAPHEMECHART AND OVERWRITE CHARTUsing a class-size Graphemechart (T-104) and/or a desk-size Overwrite Chart (T-106), have your learners trace over the relevant graphemes, consonant blend, syllable set or onset and rime to build each of the ten words. As they trace, have them practise one or more of the following skills.

1) Name the letters (to practise their spelling skills).

2) Accurately articulate the relevant phonemes in each word and after the last phoneme synthesise/blend all the phonemes together to produce the word (to practise their reading skills).

3) For each grapheme in a word, identify a word on the class-size Picturechart (T-102) and/or desk-size Picturechart (T-103), or a word from a sign or book, that has the same phoneme-grapheme link (to practise word analogy skills).

At the end of the lesson, test your learners. Give a Whole-Word Spelling Test using all ten words or a Part-Word Spelling Test by asking ten questions about the phoneme-grapheme links in the words. For example, ‘Which digraph/two-letters, do we use to show the phoneme ( f ) in dolphin’? Mark the answers as a group and ask them to show the correct answers by tracing over the graphemes on the Graphemechart and/or Overwrite Chart.

REPRODUCIBLE SHEETSThe Grapheme Group Sheets, Syllable Set Sheets, Blend Sheets, Consonant and Vowel Overwrite Sheets and GCA sheets are available as free downloads from our website. They may also be found in hard copy format in the Reading and Spelling Sections of the THRASS Resource File (T-01) or digitally on the THRASS Resource Kit CD (T-185).

The two lists on this workchart may also be used to write and then rewrite ‘spelling lists’. Writing and rewriting larger-than-normal letters helps learners to recall all of the letters in the words.

LETTER-BOXESIf the grapheme in a word is a Grapheme Catch-All (GCA), as in eight or the letter or letter string is a Non-Phonographic Spelling (NPS), as in box or new, have your learners trace over the relevant lower-case letter/s in the letter boxes.

If a grapheme is at the start of a word and the word begins with a capital letter, have your learners trace over the relevant capital letter in the letter box.

Teacher Reference BookT-171: THRASS PHONICS HANDBOOKThis A5 size reference book provides a cross-section

of the most common spelling choices for the 44

speech sounds of English, within a word context, to

facilitate learning by analogy.

The book is intended for use by all educators,

however those who have completed THRASS

accredited training will be more familiar with the

icons and structure of this title. * Use this book in

combination with the THRASS PHONICS WORD

BANK - student workbook (T-182).

T-118: FLOORCHART (GRAPHEMECHART)This chart is 260cm wide x 206cm deep.

These floorcharts make understanding

and navigating the THRASSCHARTS

easy. Learners can literally 'walk' their

way around the chart, moving from

the Vowel section to the Consonant

section with ease. They can be

used for games and other THRASS

activities.

Student WorkbooksT-173: THRASS WORKBOOKThis A4 size workbook is an excellent resource for

the explicit teaching, revision and consolidation of the

THRASSWORDS.

This workbook contains three sections: Reading, Spelling

and Handwriting. It contains most of the pages from the

Handwriting, Reading and Spelling sections of the THRASS

RESOURCE KIT (T-101) reduced to A5 size and arranged

two per page. Great value for money and an ideal resource

for home or school use.

T-182: PHONICS WORD BANK (WORKBOOK)56 page A4 size student workbook. The purpose is to provide

learners with a place to store the words they use/discover

based on the speech sounds.

By using this book regularly, learners will quickly see which

are the most common graphemes (spelling choices) for a

phoneme. They will also see that certain phonemes through

their placement in a word will have a particular spelling

choice. Learners can ‘bank’ any words they like, including

those they are having trouble with from their reading and

spelling, by highlighting the difficult grapheme and placing

the word on the correct page.

T-112: THRASS DICTIONARYThis A5 size workbook concentrates on the vowel phonemes and

their spelling choices – those that learners find most difficult.

On the left side of each page are listed the relevant THRASS

500 basewords (words that learners frequently encounter when

spelling) for the particular phoneme category. For example, for

the phoneme as heard at the start of the word ‘April’, a list of

words appears with bolded spelling choices such as break,

eight, they, rain and change, to show some of the various

spelling choices for that particular phoneme. On the right hand

side space has been left for learners to write in their own words

for later reference.

T-21: THRASS PHONEME GRAPHEME BIG BOOKThis A3 size ‘big book’ has large class-size

text. It enables readers to: recognise the

graphemes in written words; pronounce the

phonemes in spoken words; develop whole-

word awareness; say words and spell them.

This book should be used with the phoneme-

grapheme content on the RAPS AND

SEQUENCES CD (T-151) and THE PHONEME-

GRAPHEME CARDS (T-124).

These two A4 size books have been designed to suit the THRASS

methodology for teaching spelling. Level 1 is suggested for early

learners. Learners should progress to Level 2 at the teacher’s

discretion. These titles have undergone extensive trialling in a

variety of schools where THRASS is taught.

These titles allow great flexibility in that they may be used with a

traditional list approach or with the more modern environmental

print model. Importantly the titles concentrate on both the

process of spelling (MASUTA) and the end point, i.e. making the

correct spelling choice and creating a lasting visual memory for it.

&T-69: SPELLING BOOK - LEVEL 1

Level 1 (80 pages) has pages devoted to segmenting

phonemes and graphemes, word families,

testing and a progression graph.

Please note: This book does not come with prescribed word lists.

to produce them and how they are used in sentence construction.

T-176: PLAYING CARDSThese cards can be used for a variety of activities. Activities can be as simple

as story telling using cards turned face-up from the pack or matching pictures

to words. More complex activities may include linking cards by themes, words,

pictures, phonemes or graphemes when playing simple card games such as Snap,

Go Fish, THRASS Pairs and THRASSINGO.

Wild cards are provided to engage and extend oral language activities and

chart knowledge. For example, for the wild card 'A person', a match from the

THRASSCHART could be the word ‘chef’. To engage in oral language activities

ask questions such as What is a chef? Are all cooks chefs? What do chefs wear?

Where is the chef on the THRASSCHART? and What are the phonemes in chef?

T-81: ALPHABET CARDSThe ability to automatically identify, name

and write all letters of the alphabet are

crucial skills in the process of learning to

read, write and spell.

These cards can be used to demonstrate

the correct formation of the letters.

The correct starting point, direction

of movement, and finishing points,

along with correct pencil grip and page

positioning are vital for automatically. The

cards are 30cm high x 11cm wide.

Page 21: Resource Catalogue - THRASS€¦ · Contains the TEACHER’S MANUAL (T-13), RAPS AND SEQUENCES CD (T-151) and THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185). The THRASS RESOURCE KIT CD (T-185), contains

T-146: THRASS JIGSAWThis puzzle is a 120 piece deconstruction of the full-colour THRASS

PICTURECHART. It is an excellent resource for consolidation of

learning the contents and geography of the THRASS Chart.

The jigsaw pieces are made from heavy duty recycled cardboard and

presented in a strong plastic container.

T-124: PHONEME-GRAPHEME CARDSThese 120, A5 size flashcards feature each of the key pictures,

words and graphemes from the THRASS PICTURE CHART. These

can be used alone or with the PHONEME-GRAPHEME BIG BOOK

(T-21). With practise, learners will be able to look at the pictures

and (without flipping the card over) identify the corresponding key

word and grapheme printed on the flip side.

An added feature is a colour-coded border that matches a

particular page in the PHONEME-GRAPHME BIG BOOK (T-21).

This facilitates easy identification of the card for a particular word

or when developing awareness for a particular phoneme. The

cards are presented in a strong plastic container.
