BRINGING VALUE TO

STUDENTSLike all professions, the supply chain discipline faces an aging workforce whose vast institutional knowledge isn’t readily transferable. So it’s essential that a new generation of smart and experienced supply chain managers is waiting in the wings, ready to become tomorrow’s leaders. The SCRC helps ensure the continuity of the profession by providing real-world experiences with SCRC partner companies for both undergraduate and MBA students in Poole College’s supply chain management concentration. This experiential component—unique among top-tier supply chain programs—gives students valuable problem-solving opportunities while expanding their professional network, preparation that helps them hit the ground running when they start their careers.

Business school professors keep their edge by connecting with practitioners in their field. By facilitating SCRC-sponsored projects that pair students with companies, and through their own research, Poole College SCM faculty members stay current while contributing forward-thinking perspectives to the field of supply chain management. This creates a win-win scenario for both the college’s students and the companiesthat will soon employ them.

Companies that partner with the SCRC value how Poole College’s supply chain management students enable them to extend their resources while strengthening the pipeline of talented future recruits. They also value the peer networkingand knowledge exchange that takes place at SCRC’s content-rich, twice-yearly meetings and through the partners-only section of its website.

THE SUPPLY CHAIN RESOURCE COOPERATIVE“

THE STRONGEST LINK BETWEEN STUDENTS, PROFESSIONALS AND CORPORATIONS

The Supply Chain Resource Cooperative (SCRC) is a unique, industry-university partnership dedicated to advancing the supply chain industry and the profession-alism of its practitioners.

Based in the Poole College of Management at NC State University in North Carolina’s dynamic Research Triangle area, the SCRC provides support, services and programs to benefit three overlapping constituent groups: supply chain management students, Poole College of Management SCM faculty, and corporate partners from diverse busi-nesses and industries.

The SCRC also serves as a thought leader in the increasingly complex and competitive supply chain industry, documenting and disseminating new supply chain manage-ment knowledge to help companies, practitioners and students.

— BERT COSLOW Procurement Manager, Halliburton Energy Services NC State Jenkins MBA, Supply Chain Management Concentration (2009)

‘BLAISE PASCAL ONCE SAID TO HIS MATHEMATICS STUDENTS UPON THEIR GRADUATION, ‘I HAVE TAUGHT YOU ALL I KNOW. NOW YOUR TRUE EDUCATION BEGINS.’

My experience with the SCRC is evocative of Pascal’s words, as I was able to start my ‘true education’ in supply chain management while still a student, and therein, I believe, lies the SCRC’s greatest contribution to supply chain education.

SCRC AT A GLANCE

Back in 1999, supply chain and operations faculty and staff in the Poole College of Management were faced with a dilemma: they knew employers wanted graduates with a high degree of experience, yet the rigidity of the classroom model made that impractical.

SERVING TODAY’S SUPPLY CHAIN NEEDS AND TOMORROW’S CHALLENGES FOR MORE THAN A DECADE.

They also recognized that the industry was integrating the practices of operations, purchasing and logistics, and that tomorrow’s supply chain practitioners needed to understand these disciplines while seeing the bigger picture. They had several advant- ages when they were kicking around solutions to this problem, one being that they were out-of-the box thinkers. They were also subscribers to Peter Drucker’s theory of management, which he once described this way:

“Management is a practice, like medicine, and the model should have been the medical school, where the bulk of the most important teaching... is performed by practitioners. Unlike medicine, where you can bring sick patients into the hospital, business education does not allow you to bring an organization into the classroom. You can, however, bring experience in through your faculty and students. Business educators should be out as practitioners where the problems and results are.”

Encouraged by the enthusiastic support of companies with an interest in contributing to both their own bottom lines and the practice of supply chain management, these leaders created the Supply Chain Resource

Cooperative (SCRC) within the Poole College of Management. Four visionary companies signed on as founding supporters willing to share their resources and their challenges.

Today, numbers tell the story of the SCRC’s success. The SCRC proudly engages with a dozen or more business and industry partners whose charitable, tax-deductible contributions fund the SCRC’s programs, resources, and research initiatives that enable them to provide thought leadership to the supply chain industry and its practitioners.Since being formed in 2000, over 1,400 Poole College of Management students, most in the MBA program offered through the college’s Jenkins Graduate School of Management, have completed over 400 research projects with 40+ very satisfied business partners. Jenkins MBA graduates with a supply chain concentration enjoy exceptionally high placement rates in supply chain related positions upon graduation.

SCRC’s leaders work with the Jenkins MBA program to accommodate more graduate students and to increase and diversify its base of supporting companies while remaining a go-to source of supply-chain information and leadership.

Robert Handfield, Ph.D., is the Co-Director of the SCRC and the Bank of America University Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management in NC State’s Poole College of Management. Handfield is a consulting editor of the Journal of Operations Management and has written several books on supply chain management, including “Supply Market Intelligence, Supply Chain Re-Design.” His co-authored textbooks for MBA and undergraduate programs include “Purchasing and Supply Chain Management” (with Robert Monczka) and “Operations and Supply Chain Management” (with Poole College of Management professor Cecil Bozarth). Indentified as one of a handful of professionals in the 2007 Pros to Know list complied by Supply and Demand Chain Executive journal, Handfield is regularly quoted in such periodicals as The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times and the Supply Chain Management Review.

Over the course of his career, Handfield has consulted with more than 25 Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries.Such experience has helped inform his ongoing research on the performance ofcompanies with “best in class” supply chain management processes versus those whose supply chain practices are mediocre, which shows that best-in-class companies experience greater stockholder value and enjoy higher savings. Handfield joined the college in 1999 and received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1990.

Clyde Crider is the Co-Director of the SCRC and brings to the table more than 40 years of experience with supply chain management leadership at Caterpillar Inc. At Caterpillar’s North Carolina facilities, Crider mentored many of the college’s Jenkins MBA project teams working with the company through its partnership with the SCRC. Since joining NC State University in August 2010, he has been coordinating and overseeing student projects from the academic side.

During his career with Caterpillar, Crider held roles of increasing responsibility in nearly every aspect of Caterpillar’s global supply chain including purchasing, warehousing, transportation, materials planning, logistics, supplier scheduling, demand and orders forecasting, sales and operations planning, Class A Operational Excellence, Lean/6 Sigma, Caterpillar Production System, supply chain value stream analysis and strategic workforce planning. Most recently he served as the lead learning and talent development manager for building construction products division in Cary, NC and as a senior learning consultant for Caterpillar University ― which was recognized as the Best Overall Corporate University in 2004. His credentials include Senior Professional in Human Resources certification (SPHR) and Caterpillar Certified Six Sigma Black Belt. Crider has an MBA from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

THE POOLE COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT’S SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW IN RANKING AND REPUTATION, THANKS IN PART TO THE SYNERGIES CREATED BY THE SCRC AND THE STRENGTH OF THE FACULTY. SCRC LEADERSHIP:

WHERE SCM STUDENTS APPLY THEIR CLASSROOM KNOWLEDGE TO SOLVE REAL WORLD PROBLEMS, WORKING WITH REAL COMPANIES.

In the practicum, students work in small teams with company mentors to solve a supply chain related problem presented by a partner company. They wrap up the semester-long projects with presentations of their findings and recommendations to key executives at the sponsoring company, and summary reports to SCRC partner compa-nies at the semester-end bi-annual meeting.

Throughout the process, students gain valuable problem-solving experience, learn to work collaboratively, and provide valuable solutions to the sponsoring company. Com-panies frequently report significant savings after implementing the innovative solutions developed by their student practicum teams.

THE CAPSTONE OF POOLE COLLEGE’S SCM CURRICULUM IS THE PRACTICUM.

THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION MAJOR WITH AN OPERATIONS/SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION, INCLUDING A REqUIRED PRACTICUM FOR HONORS STUDENTS

Competitive scholarships are available for undergraduate students studying supply chain management.

THE NC STATE UNIVERSITYJENKINS MBA WITH A SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION, INCLUDING A REqUIRED PRACTICUM

Open to both part-time and full-time MBA students, with competitive graduate assis-tantships and SCRC fellowships available to MBA students in this field of study.

“My association with the SCRC has been phenomenal in terms of my learning and my career. I have completed eight cap-stone level projects (six with Duke Energy & 2 with Chevron) during my two years here at NC State and truly feel like I am able to hit my full-time position full speed after I graduate. These projects have ranged from warehousing best practices to supplier analysis to business process development. While working on these projects I picked up knowledge, skills, and abilities that I did not have before joining the program.”

“Our collaboration with NCSU’s Supply Chain Resource Cooperative continues to deliver real value to Lenovo’s business as we innovate and transform our global supply chain. I was very impressed with one of the SCRC project teams, which delivered an outstanding benchmarking study of industry standard practices associated with managing customer order fulfillment. The team compiled useful market data that yielded important insights into the dynamics and needs of key international markets. This type of supply chain project work is enabling Lenovo to adopt business processes and metrics that more closely align to industry best practices and better meet customer expectations, resulting in increased satisfaction and loyalty.”

SANDRA K. WELLETVICE PRESIDENT, STRATEGY & OPERATIONS, GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN

“The students successfully developed a sustainable governance process for easily accessible information for decision making while understanding the total cost of ownership of a fork lift fleet. They were able to deliver a database for the easily accessible data needed to make decisions, process maps for standard work for the governance process, a recommendation for a new naming convention, as well as some population of the data in the database. After the hand-off of the project, the Clayton and Smithfield, NC, locations became the pilot for the initial use of the database. Overall this tool has been a great success, and will continue to drive great fleet management as we continue.”

JIMMY A. TAYLOR, GENERAL MANAGER – LOGISTICS OFFICE

“Here is the value I find from SCRC. Resources: Bandwidth is typically tight, so having MBA students available to work on key projects is a great way to extend my team’s resources. Thought leadership: Engaging with professors and other thought leaders at NC State is akin to having access to a consulting firm. Practical solutions: I continue to be impressed with the practical solutions that come from the SCRC projects. This is not just about theory but rather practical recommendations that can be implemented in the short term with an ROI. Networking: The bi-annual meetings of partner companies provide an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know other executives in different industries and thus broaden one’s thinking outside of one’s own industry.”

“Each team has a Biogen Idec sponsor and a SCRC/NC State Faculty advisor. This collaboration has provided the teams with oversight and access to resources at Biogen Idec and NC State, thereby maximizing their productivity. The benefits of these projects to Biogen Idec include: (i) substantial price reduc-tions of commodity materials through should-cost analyses, and (ii) enhance-ments to risk management tools, such as risk-mapping and key performance indicators, which have since been used by new product launch teams to identify risks and develop mitigation plans.”
