Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating a remnant magnetic field to prevent access to data on magnetic storage media. Degaussers create powerful magnetic fields to erase/sanitize magnetic storage media such as hard drives, backup tapes, floppy disks, audio/video cassettes, even reel-to-reel tape.

Levels of DegaussWhile levels of degauss can vary greatly based on a variety of factors, there are really only two classifications of degaussers that matter:

- NSA Evaluated Degausser for Classified Data- Non-NSA Evaluated Degausser for all other data

NSA Evaluated Degaussers - Classified data stored on magnetic media must be degaussed in an NSA Evaluated Degausser. The National Security Agency performs tests on degaussers to judge their ability to remove data. The units that they deem effective for these purposes are listed on the NSA Degausser Evaluated Products List. If a degausser is not on the EPL it must not be used for media that stores Classified/Top Secret Data. Degaussed drives cannot be re-used or re-purposed regardless of the type of degausser.

Non-NSA Evaluated Degaussers - Appropriate for virtually all commercial use applications as well as some government and military uses such as CUI or PII data. Non-NSA Evaluated Degaussers are typically smaller, lighter and less expensive than NSA Evaluated Degaussers. Their degaussing strength may be similar or greater than NSA levels but they have not been submitted for NSA testing.

No matter what type of magnetic media you have, from High Security/Classified to Sensitive/CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) SEM has a degausser to erase it. The following information will help you determine what type of degausser is best for your needs.

Types of Degaussers - TechnologyElectromagnetic degaussers remove data by applying a very strong, short duration magnetic field pulse to the media. An electrical charge is stored in large capacitors. When these capacitors are full, their energy is simultaneously discharged into a coil of wire that surrounds the media in the degausser chamber. The flow of current through the coil creates a large magnetic field that degausses the media.A major advantage of electromagnetic technology is that electromagnetic degaussers tend to be lighter, more portable and less expensive than similarly rated permanent magnetic degaussers. Permanent magnetic degaussers are very susceptible to failure when exposed to high temperatures.

Permanent Magnet degaussers use an array of Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) fixed magnets to degauss media. With the NdFeb permanent magnets arranged in a tested and validated structure, the degausser creates an intense magnetic field without requiring an electrical charge. The stored data on the magnetic media (hard drives or tapes) is erased prohibiting the media from continued use. A major disadvantage of permanent magnet technology is expense and heat. Creating rare earth magnetics involves a multi-step process that is time consuming and expensive. Recent studies have shown that mining process may also pose serious threats to individuals and the environment. Because of this, permanent magnet degaussers often cost 2 to 3 times more than electromagnetic degaussers with similar erasure capabilities. Fixed magnets are also susceptible to high temperatures. Environments where the temperatures exceed 80˚, will impair magnetic fields and their degaussing effectiveness.

An option for rendering data inaccessible on magnetic media is physical destruction. The two primary methods are crushing and shredding.

Hard Drive Crushers use powerful force applied to the drive chassis to buckle and/or pierce it. The internal platters, and read/write heads are damaged beyond reasonable recovery methods making the drive inoperable.

Hard Drive Shredders operate the same way as paper shredders but with larger more rugged cutting heads. Drives enter the cutting mechanism where they are literally ripped to shreds. The result is a pile of twisted metal that barely resembles a hard drive.

Per NSA Directives, Physical Destruction is required After Degaussing of Classified Drives. For unclassified magnetic media, a crusher or shredder used on its own is acceptable. However, for classified magnetic media or for added security, it is necessary to degauss drives with a degausser listed on the NSA/EPL, then physically destroy them using an NSA Evaluated Crusher or HDD Shredder. This two step approach is mandated by the DoD for classified data.

Destroy More than Just Hard DrivesCrushers crush and shredders shred. They don’t discriminate based on the items that are fed into them. So, they can be used for other media like solid state drives, smartphones, optical media, MP3 players, touch pads, e-readers, cell phones, PDAs, PC boards and more.

Crusher or Shredder...Which is Right for You?Typically crushers are used in lower volume applications, 100 drives per day or less (a quality hard drive crusher takes about 8 seconds to crush a drive).

When volumes are greater a shredder makes more sense. These larger machines can be fed faster and operated continuously for long periods of time. Small hard drive shredders destroy up to 500 drives per hour, larger machines, up to 3,500 drives per hour.

DIN Standard 66399 Many security experts have begun looking at DIN Standard 66399 to evaluate destruction capabilities. Material Classification H deals with hard drives with magnetic data carriers. There are three methods of SSD Destruction. Crushing, shredding & disintegration.

SSD Crushers are ideal for low volume destruction of solid state hard drives, but may be impractical for smaller solid state devices like thumb drives, compact flash, etc.

SSD Shredders are recommended for high volume destruction of any type of SSD. They produce final waste particles of 0.375" (significantly smaller than the 1.5", 1.0" or even 0.75" particles generated by HDD shredders) and small enough to ensure that the flash storage chips are destroyed.

SSD Disintegration is the option that provides the most complete chip destruction and highest level of security. SSD disintegrators continuously cut SSDs until they are small enough to pass through a waste sizing screen. Particle sizes as small as 0.5 mm2 makes data recovery impossible.

Eliminating the possibility of data recovery from solid state hard drives (SSDs) and other solid state devices can be a significant challenge.Unlike rotational platter based hard drives and other magnetic media, solid state devices CAN NOT be degaussed. As such, physical destruction is required. SSDs store vast amounts of data on small flash memory chips and the only way to ensure that the data is not recoverable is to damage or destroy each and every chip. Therefore only devices specifically designed for SSD destruction should be used. Using devices designed for rotational platter based hard drives could allow some chips to escape damage leaving large amounts of data intact and recoverable.

Mixed Media Disintegrators - Addressing the destruction challenges of mixed media

Data storage media takes a variety of forms beyond just rotational platter based hard drives and solid state hard drives. Any comprehensive destruction program must include a plan for optical media and mixed media.

Optical media which includes CDs and DVDs has been widely used as a stable long term storage media since the 1980s and 90s. More recently the optical media category has grown to include Blu-Ray disks. Even fragments of these discs can contain large amounts of data so destruction to extremely small particle sizes is necessary.

The category of mixed media is quite broad. Typically it describes any device or non-paper media that stores data. This includes cell phones, smartphones, tablets, flash cards, thumb drives, SIM cards, credit cards, common access cards, and much more. Like optical media, the amount of data that can be contained on small fragments can be substantial.

The Model DS-400 has a 50% larger rotor than the Model 200. The additional mass provides greater rotational inertia resulting in a more efficient and effective cutting action. It also has 50% more screen area for higher throughput.

SEM offers four models of mixed media disintegrators. All four systems are listed on the NSA/CSS 02-02 Evaluated Products List (EPL) for High Security Disintegrators. When equipped with the appropriate waste sizing screen they are suitable for the destruction of both mixed media and optical media. Additionally these units are listed on the NSA EPL for classified paper destruction.

Methods of DestructionOptical media can be destroyed to NSA requirements in two ways, shredding or disintegration. The NSA Standard for Optical Media, NSA/CSS 04-02, requires a waste particle no larger than 2.2mm x 4mm.For mixed media, disintegration is required to meet NSA Requirements. The applicable NSA Standard is NSA/CSS 02-02 it requires destruction to particle size of nominally 2mm edge length in an NSA Evaluated and Listed disintegrator.

The NSA also performs a durability test for 1 hour where the maximum amount of paper is shredded. The durability test results are stated in pages per pass and reams per hour.
