RECONCILIATION WEEK Yesterday our school convened a Reconciliation Assembly. Reconciliation Week begins on May 27, (the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum where over 90 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ in the census) and concludes on June 3, marking the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title.

Year 8 & 9 Art students prepared posters, Mayor John Rohde addressed the assembly and talked from a community and personal perspective and we viewed a video produced by Princess Ladra which provided insights into staff and student responses to the question What does reconciliation mean to us? (check it out on Facebook). The video communicated some key messages; Reconciliation means working together, getting along, equity, building positive and respectful relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Some talked about a bigger picture where all Australians regardless of race, religion or sexuality could live together in harmony.

Breeanna Warne, a Year 10 student prepared and delivered a moving speech entitled “What is Reconciliation Week?” Andrew Smith; State manager of the SA Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) unveiled the JPSS 2015 SAASTA Guernsey. Angus Knight’s design with a deadly king brown snake, acknowledgement of the Nukunu people and traditional red, black and gold colouring will be worn by all JPSS students involved in the Power Cup next week.

In the end Reconciliation is about RESPECT a quality important to success in school but also as an employee, a citizen and member of our community.

Open Boys Knock Out Footy

On Thursday May 21, the John Pirie Senior Football team caught

the bus to Clare to compete in the opening round against Clare

and Balaklava High Schools. With Balaklava pulling out it meant

that one full game would be played against Clare.

John Pirie began the game well and had more scoring shots in

the first quarter but inaccurate kicking meant that they were

trailing at quarter time. After this point Clare were too good and

played consistent football to eventually win the game. The

scoreboard suggested the win was easy for Clare; however this

was far from the case. The John Pirie players competed at every

contest from the beginning to the end showing great

persistence. The result was an enormous improvement on last

year’s effort, which shows, that John Pirie are the real victors in

terms of football development. Next year’s game will be one for

the ages!

The teamwork from the John Pirie side was a highlight with all

players having an impact and some of the passages of play were

skilful and exciting to watch. Some individual standouts were

Jeremiah Scrutton who worked tirelessly and took 47 marks for

the game. Brenton Binell showed exceptional leadership while

Ethan Hanslow and Mitch Vanstone worked hard and supported

team mates all game.

Year 8/9 Knockout Football

On Thursday May 21, 24 eager young men from years 8 and 9

boarded a bus to Port Augusta to represent JPSS in the Year 8/9

Knockout Football competition. They were greeted by crisp but

otherwise perfect conditions and they quickly steeled

themselves for their first adversary- Port Augusta High School.

From the opening bounce it was clear that the pill would be hotly

contested and despite an even start, late goals to Port Augusta

saw them head into the first break with a handy three goal lead.

As the contest unfolded the dominance of the older,

predominantly Year 9 Port Augusta bodies began to impose

themselves on the game and the scoreboard deficit grew

inexorably. Despite some fantastic individual performances from

the likes of Kirby Gadaleta, Captain Brodie Trigg, Mitch Alchin

and Vice-Captain Decklan Gray, and the impressive fighting

qualities from Blaithe Gill-O’Connor, Dylan McGregor (who badly

broke a finger) and Kobain King (who was wearing footy boots

for the first time), the gulf in age, experience and skill was too

great and Port Augusta went on to post a comfortable 10 goal

win with Dylan Trigg our leading goal kicker.

The breeze had stiffened by the opening bounce of the second

game and a fresh-legged combined Whyalla side won an

important toss and immediately put our tired troops to the

sword. There were some outstanding passages of play where

two or three handballs, a bounce or the breaking of a tackle

would result in a kick to a John Pirie lead, however the result was

never in doubt and Whyalla went on to run out comfortable

winners.

All participants who pulled on the sacred anchor should be proud

of their efforts. Outgunned all day long they fought hard, were

courageous and showed exemplary sportsmanship to the point

of being congratulated on their conduct by the umpires. Clearly

Term 1’s focus on Respect has paid dividends.

The results mean John Pirie will play no further part in the 2015

competition. With rumours circulating of some promising talent

inbound from the Year 7 feeder schools however, we are already

looking towards 2016 with a collective determination to go one

better. Congratulations to all involved.

What’s happening in Maths

Many Mathematical opportunities continue to run for John Pirie

students including excursions and competitions. Later this term

year 10 students will compete in the annual Science and

Engineering competition where students will compete against

schools from around the area. Elite Maths students from year 9

and 10 will have more Unipathways opportunities with trips

planned for Terms 3 and 4. The Australian Maths competition

will take place in July where students from all year levels will

compete. Groups of students have taken local excursions using

mathematical skills to measure the famous local landmark “The

Stack” which is the tallest structure in South Australia. Also staff

members Miss Weckert and Mrs Tulloch who are part of the

Southern Yorke Maths in Action Partnership will attend training

to gain more ideas for engaging maths activities.

Celebration Assembly

On May 6, JPSS celebrated achievements of Term 1 at a whole

school assembly. Students who achieved a high Grade Point

Average (GPA) were awarded certificates acknowledging their

excellent results. GPAs from Term 1 reports are calculated on the

basis of students being awarded 5 points for an ‘A’, 4 for a ‘B’, 3

for a ‘C’ etc. and then the total being averaged over the number

of subjects they study.

Operation Flinders

Nine students and two staff embarked on a week of endurance

and persistence walking for a week in the Northern Flinders

Ranges.

During weeks 2 and 3, nine students and two staff travelled

north to a station 50km out of Leigh Creek to embark on 8 days

and 7 nights of persistence and team building. Each day the

group would walk up to 12km of rocky undulating and beautiful

outback scenery, carrying their packs containing their tent,

sleeping gear, clothing and daily food and water.

After a hard days walk, we were required to set up camp, which

involved setting up hoochies (a thin plastic sheet that acts as

their tent), starting a fire and cooking tea using the hot coals.

Sleep wasn’t easy as the nights were cold and the mattresses

were thin. In the morning it was our responsibility to pack-up

camp and be walking by 8am.

On the Saturday the team were challenged by abseiling, having

to walk down a 30m cliff face, using ropes and a harness. It was

amazing to see the boy’s face their fears and lean back over the

cliff face trusting a thin rope to hold them, then half way down

the cliff seeing the pride and confidence they had in learning a

new skill.

Overall it was a long, smelly, and testing week, through that

week everyone learnt persistence, respect, responsibility and

confidence. It will take us a few weeks to recover.

Buses

Due to Port Pirie Partnerships Early Closure Tuesday June 2, the

buses will run approximately 1 hour earlier than normal. The first

bus is scheduled to leave John Pirie Secondary School at 2:35pm

with all buses having left the school by 2:45pm.

OPERATION FLINDERS
