Information Evening for K 2020 Parents and New Parents to the School The Kindergarten Information Evening for parents of 2020 Kindergarten students is on next Wednesday 30th October from 6pm -7pm in the hall. New parents to the school may also like to attend. This is an opportunity for parents to meet the Principal, Deputy Principal and Assistant Principal overseeing Kindergarten, along with our current Kindergarten teachers and other key personnel within the school. Parents will be presented important information to help prepare prospective Kindergarten students for their transition to school. Parents who have attended this evening in previous years may feel they know our school well and choose not to attend. If this is the case, please ensure you collect your child’s Kindergarten Information Pack from the School Office on Thursday 31st October as important information is enclosed regarding your child’s orientation class and the Transition Morning next year. The program for the Information Evening follows:

Welcome Principal’s Address

Uniform Canteen

P & C How to prepare your child for Kindergarten

Closing

The information conveyed after the P&C address is very specific to parents of 2020 Kindergarten students. New parents to the school may like to leave at this point but are of course very welcome to stay. Kindergarten Orientation for 2020 Students There are two Kindergarten Orientation Days for students: Orientation One is on Wednesday 6th November from 9:45 - 11:00am. Orientation Two is on Tuesday 12th November from 9:45 - 11:00am. Students attend both orientation mornings. At the first orientation, we ask that parents join us in the hall for morning tea, a brief presentation and Q & A time once parents have taken their child to their designated orientation classroom. During the second orientation, we suggest that parents take their child to their orientation class and then leave the school grounds, returning just before 11:00am to collect their child. This is to simulate the procedures of a school day - ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’. Mrs Wendy Mwanga Deputy Principal

STARR’s Planetarium Yesterday Year 3 was inspired and amazed with an interactive display that complements their unit of work in Science titled Spinning in Space. A Planetarium, which is a dome theatre was set up within our Manly West School’s hall. During the sessions, students learnt about the Solar System and Galaxy and covered aspects of the relationships between the Earth, Moon and Sun. They discovered the reason we have seasons and changes in our planet throughout the year.

PBEL-Respect At Manly West we encourage and our expectations are that our students use the toilets appropriately. We have been reminding students of the importance of using our toilet areas appropriately. Students have been reminded to:

Use the toilet paper and soap appropriately Use toilet quietly and leave Be water wise Be mindful of personal space

For Child Protection reasons, we ask that parents and carers use the toilets located outside the front office, with or without toddlers. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held 12th March 2020.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online are available online at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7

The application website opens at that link on 8th October 2019 and closes on 11th November 2019. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the High Performance Unit for assistance after the 8th October 2019.

Library News Meet our terrific Tuesday Library Monitors, Eve, Henry and Benjy! They all love scanning the returns and even have a friendly competition over who gets to scan first. Eve hates to leave the library when the jobs are done, and the boys approach shelving like a giant puzzle and the books are the pieces. Ask them for a reading suggestion and you’ll hear about their favourite series of books – Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events and The Seven Ancient Wonders.

But the library isn’t all about books as you know. Check out these students doing another activity in the second half of lunch! Please remember that there are board games, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles and drawing supplies to keep you busy. It’s also a great place to relax and have a chat with your friends away from

the hustle and bustle of the playground and oval. Students in K-2 can come for the second half of lunchtimes on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Primary children can visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You can also have a look at the progress of the beautiful mural transforming the corridor between the library and Cyber City. Hope to see you sometime soon!

This year’s final Scholastic Book Club Catalogues will be handed out by the end of this week and it’s a great time to order ahead for giving the gift of summer reading and activities. Please order online using the LOOP system or by handing in the completed order form and cheque (made out to Scholastic Australia) before or by Friday, November 8th, 2019. This way you will receive your orders well before the end of year rush! Also, DO NOT FORGET to mark your order as a GIFT ORDER if you do not want everything to be delivered to your child’s classroom! How organised you’ll feel when everyone else is in a panic in December!

Happy reading!

Kitchen Gardens News In the Kitchen Garden this week... It's busy in the garden this term! Year 4 are working on their Science "Material World" unit and doing garden jobs this week. Year 1, Year 2 and Kindy will be visiting the garden in the coming weeks to do lessons from their Science units in our outdoor classroom. Donations We are still collecting milk bottle lids for an art and craft project. Please drop off to the garden shed on Wednesdays or Thursdays. War on Waste continues... Composting and Worm Farming Workshops @ Ecohouse at Kimbriki If you're concerned about climate change, learn how to compost and worm farm at one of these Ecohouse workshops on Sat 16th November. The cost is $30 and you get a voucher for a free worm farm or compost (one per household). Food waste that goes to landfill breaks down anaerobically producing methane and carbon dioxide, and both are potent greenhouse gases. P & C Environment Committee Meeting The meeting will be held next Tuesday 29th October 6-7.30pm. Please come along and become part of the (waste) solution! School Compost Bins Please sign up to help turn our compost bins and water the Kitchen Garden. Go to Signupgenius.com search under my email address, [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits. If you haven't done this before, email me and we can arrange a garden orientation. If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, you must be signed up at least once per term. Please do not put ANY bags in the bins, even if they say they are compostable or biodegradable. Whole school Working Bee: Saturday 2nd November 2 - 4.30pm Please sign up to come along and help. We will be working in and around the Kitchen Garden and in the gardens next to the Year 6 area. Jobs will include rubbish collection, weeding, tidying up plants/bushes, some planting and mulching. Many hands make light work! Please go to SignUpGenius to sign up. The instructions are the same as above except you search for "MW Working Bee". Thanks, Angie Penn and Beth Dowdle

Before & After School Care

Juniors week ahead

K-1 - This week in the K-1 Room we are designing our own emojis, creating spooky Halloween costumes and

making our own puzzles. We will be taking advantage of this beautiful weather and playing plenty of games on

the oval, running some relays and working our way through tricky obstacle courses. We are also introducing a

‘relaxing reading corner’ a couple of mornings per week for those who would like to quietly start their morning.

On Thursday afternoon we’re travelling around the world - we will be playing games from other countries,

looking at how we say hello in different languages and creating a delicious international dish!

2.0 – This week in Room 2.0 we will be focusing on team sport inspired games and how to work well in groups.

This includes sports, craft and having conversations about how we can all improve working in a group

environment. We’re also going to be looking at how we can play certain games differently. Giant Dominoes is

very popular in our room, so we’ll be using the domino blocks to create our very own dream home. This is

inspired by some of the children who initiated this activity last week. As well as Halloween craft, a soccer

incursion run by Riley who plays high level soccer. Year 2 have earnt their surprise of pancakes this Thursday

morning for breakfast.

Jr. Incursion Update - This term the K-2 incursions will be about giving back to our community! We have

some great activities planned based off the children’s ideas. These activities include collecting & donating old

clothes, toys, tinned food and blankets (starts week 5), making toys for the children at bear cottage, writing

letters to the residents at palm grove nursing home, talking to fire fighters and getting the opportunity to

explore a fire engine and interviewing Mrs Organ.

Please see Natalie or Daniel if you’d like a copy of our Term 4 incursion program. However, changes may be

made.

MESSAGE FROM SARAH- Dear BASC families, Over the next 2 weeks we will be sending you an email regarding your sessions for 2020. Please reply to the email if you are requesting changes/ cancelling sessions. We do still have an after-school care waiting list, though our expansion has assisted in some movement and has reduced the waiting times. There are some before school places available! 2020 Kindies (siblings are prioritised) will be notified of any availability in November. BASC Committee meeting next Tuesday 29 October, 6.30pm in the 3/4 Room. Everyone is welcome!

Meet our Educators

“Hi, I’m Ash! I’ve been working at BASC for 6 months and am currently studying business marketing. You’ll find me in the K-1 room. I like how BASC represents the fun, loving nature of the children. I graduated Manly West back in 2010. As a student my favourite memories are running around the playground being around all my friends.”

…. The BASC room was officially opened in November 1995 by the

Minister for Education and Training. The room was named ‘Yambalin’,

which means ‘house of play’.
