PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

Principals Message 25/07/2019

Art Show 2019 Thursday 25th July - 4:30-6:00

We hope to see many school families and friends at the Art Show this week, Thursday 25th July, 4:30-6pm. All students have a number of artworks on display so we hope you enjoy the display. My thanks to Nadine Ogilvie for creating this event for our students and school community. Without Nadine’s organisation, planning and teamwork the Art Show would not be possible. The School Choir will also be performing during the event. Scones, Jam and Cream will be available for $2. We look forward to seeing you at this special event.

Student Attitudes to School Survey 2019 Year 4- Year 6

We received the 2019 Student Attitude to School Survey Report last week. The results indicate the 65% of Year 4-6 students feel we are effectively Managing Bullying, this is an increase from 51% in 2018 and reflects our focus on ‘Respectful Relationships’, Bullying Zero, Dolly’s Dream, School Wide Positive Behaviour Expectations and Student Leadership. Other areas to highlight that put our school above state average included: Differentiated Learning 83%; High Expectations 86%, Teacher Concern 74%; Resilience 65% and School Connectedness 75%. We still have more work to do, however it is encouraging to see the positive impact on school life our programs have been having.

Mid-Year Reports and Conferences I hope you had an opportunity to read your child/ren’s mid-year report with them over the holidays. The student comments, learning goals and achievements across the school were significant and we know that 95% of our students are working to achieve 12 months of learning during 12 months of school. Please take note of the attendance and behaviour indicators as these 2 factors impact significantly on student learning, peer relationships and confidence at school.

Thank you to parents/carers who booked in for a Learning Conference using the link provided last week. Three Way Learning Conference times have been sent home. Unfortunately, the Year 5/6 conferences will be delayed until later in this term when Katherine Williams returns to Sebastopol Primary School. Naturally, if you have a child in the 5/6 class and you would like to have a conversation before Katherine’s return please contact Christie or myself at the office.

Year 2/3 Class To start Term 3 Mrs Nadine Ogilvie (Tues, Wed) and Michelle Reinhardt (Mon, Thurs and Fri) will be teaching the class. Gabby Williams is currently performing another role out of the classroom this term. The class is progressing well and they are a great group of learners, role models and future school leaders. We apologise for the changes in class teaching arrangements.

Arch of Victory Pozieres Ridge Commemoration – Sunday 28th July 11am

The school has been invited to join the Pozieres Ridge Commemoration on Sunday 28th July at 11:00 at the Arch of Victory. We will be laying a wreath to remember past student Charles Thomas Hill who died at this battle in July 2016. Students are invited to join Ms Wilson for this service next Sunday. Please wear full school uniform.

Japanese Cultural Visit Next week we are hosting 40+ international students from Japan. The 14-17 year old students spend time in Ballarat staying with Host families, learning Australian/English, visiting the tourist sites and sharing a cultural program with our students. On Friday 30th July, all students will complete a range of Japanese Cultural activities to enhance their understanding of Japanese language, history and arts.

Golden Plains Family Day Care is hosting a free Community event that is being held in Smythesdale on the 12th August 2019, in celebration of Science Week 2019. Victoria University is presenting a live perfor-mance by The Professor Science Troupe and The Ballarat Municipal Observatory are holding a star/planet gazing session with their high tech equipment – plus the Men’s Shed is hosting a BBQ. It will be an amaz-ing night of fun and learning and a great way to celebrate science in the local community. Below is a link to a video of the Troupe performing (it’s fantastic). Possibly this email could be shared with your PFA Committee, as it would be a fantastic family night for the school OR a terrific opportunity for an after-hours excursion for some/all classes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHf3Wbm4Fpw The event starts at 5.30pm and the Professor Science Troupe performs for an hour (5.30pm – 6.30pm) with The Ballarat Observatory holding their star gazing session after this performance wraps up. Details for the event Venue: Smythesdale Recreation Reserve, 55 Heales St Smythesdale Date: Monday 12th August 2019 Time: 5.30 – 7.30 Cost: FREE If you have any questions please call the office on 5220 7230.

At 11.00 am on Sunday July 28th, the Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Committee will hold a short service to commemorate a week, 103 years ago, when 26 Ballarat men were killed at Pozieres in France. Students are encouraged to join Ms Wilson for this special event at the Arch of Victory. One of the soldiers, Charles Thomas Hill was a student at Sebastopol Primary School, prior to his services in 1916. The Battle of Pozieres began on July 23rd 1916, continued until early September and involved fierce fighting at legendary places like Mouquet Farm and the Windmill. Australian casualties were very heavy, leading official WW1 historian, Charles Bean, to describe Pozieres Ridge as ‘a place more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth’. Arch of Victory/Avenue of Honour Committee President, Garry Snowden, said it was hard to imagine the impact of such losses on the Ballarat community at that time. “The tragedy of these losses is further magnified when you consider that 19 of those men have no known grave, and their families were de-nied even the slight comfort of knowing that their loved one had a grave and headstone bearing his name,” he said. “At least in our Avenue of Honour, the sacrifice of each of these men is commemorat-ed by a tree and a plaque bearing his name.” The men, whose names will be called during the service, are George Everett JAMES, Clarence Gerald PARKINSON, Thomas George THWAITES, Harold BARBER, Bertrand Allenby BOYCE, Henry Jesse Trimmer BROWN, Stanley Joseph Callow CHAMPION, William Charles COXON, John PEARCE, William Henry THURLING, Victor Grose WARBURTON, James Phillip ZAHNLEITER, Charles Edward HARDMAN, Clarence Walter SHARP, Eric Thomas BRIND, Charles Herbert HAR-ROP, Charles Thomas HILL, Ernest Charles Gilbert YOUDAN, Francis Dysart LEVER, Harold Illing-worth CLARK, John FENOTTI, Neil MACDONALD, William James GINGELL, Frederick PREISIG and Harold Stanley YATES. Enquiries: Gar ry Snowden [email protected] or 0487 313137. Please let Ms Wilson know if you can attend on Sunday 28th July 11am.

It was wonderful sharing afternoon tea with Raylee, her family, present and past colleagues as we celebrated her 35+ years in education with the children of Sebastopol as an Education Support Officer, Speech Therapy and Library Assistants. Raylee’s love of books, young people and support for learning has been evident throughout her time at Sebastopol Primary School. Congratulations and enjoy your retirement.
