In the excitement, we always reflect upon the hardships and struggles that our forefathers had faced, in moulding Singapore to who she is today. Strong, united and confident. To face such a dynamic and ever-changing global landscape, our students need to be stronger, more united and more confident than ever. The strongest and tallest tree began from a little seed. The skyscrapers that line our skies sit on sturdy foundations. In line with the theme of this year’s National Day Parade, ‘We are Singapore’, our students need to know what it means to be a Singaporean, how they can reach far and wide while still remain rooted to our country and how they can contribute to nation-building and serve the community. Through such interactions, our students learn kindness, graciousness, respect, empathy and to have courage to stand up for what is right. They learn that there is beauty in celebrating our differences and, it is this harmony that is going to be the sturdy foundation that will keep us afloat in uncharted waters. All NCPS students have opportunities to contribute to national-building. By being diligent and responsible students, they are equipping themselves with academic knowledge and excellent work attitude that will see them far into the future. The Values-in-Action programme sees all the students involved in activities that serve the community such as, cleaning different areas of the school, organising activities that spread awareness about environmental issues and being involved with the senior members of our community, to name a few. This is our way of getting our students to give back and have a positive social impact on the communities around us. This is the essence of what it means to be a Singaporean, to serve with heart and passion. I wish you and your family a Happy National Day! The future of Singapore lies in the hands of our young generation and yet, our young charges need not look far in order to find inspiration to steer Singapore to greater heights. The magic lies within themselves. The uniqueness of our everyday Singaporean lives defines our culture. In the midst of our daily routines, we interact with Singaporeans from increasingly different home, racial, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

2Racial Harmony Day

An annual Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign (ADAC) is held during the month ofJune and July every year in Singapore to commemorate the ‘InternationalDay Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’; also known as ‘World DrugDay’. For this year, it falls on 26 June.

In NCPS, we support the bold vision of turning Singapore into a Drug FreeNation. We educate our students on the harmful effects of drugs, theconsequences of drug abuse and how we can say ‘NO’ to drugs. On 5 July2018, we had invited an officer from Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) to givea talk to the students. The officer empowered our students with theknowledge of commonly abused drugs and advised them against giving into the temptation of drug abuse. It was an enriching session and ourstudents had greatly benefitted from it.

This year, we were glad to have students from Jinjiang ElementarySchool to join us in the celebration. They set up a booth to displaysome of their traditional crafts. Our students had fun playing withtheir hand puppets and tried their hands at making paper lanterns.

We hope that through these activities, our students willlearn to appreciate our diverse cultural heritage andbuild friendships among the different ethniccommunities.

“I think racial harmony is very important in Singapore.

My Indian neigbour and I get along very well since we were in kindergarten.

We help each academically and go for outing together. We need to accept

people from different races because we are all living

together in Singapore.”

- (Lin Jiayi, 5DL)“I learnt not to judge a book by its cover.

We should not form conclusion just by looking at

someone's appearance. Just because someone is

dressed shabbily, it doesn't mean that the person is poor

or has bad values.”

(Soh Yu Heng, 5DL)

National Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign

As this year's Racial Harmony Day falls onSaturday, 21 July, Nan Chiau Primary School celebrated this event on Thursday andFriday, 19 and 20 July. This event is to commemorate the 1964 racial riots. It is a dayfor schools to reflect on, and celebrate Singapore's success as a racially harmonious nation andsociety built on a rich diversity of culture and heritage. On Thursday, studentsand staff came to school in their traditional costumes. Besides the assembly, ‘Perfect Harmony’,students had a chance to sample traditional food like ‘kueh baulu’, ‘kacang putih’ and iced gembiscuits during their recess. There was also buddy activities like matching traditional costumes aswell as a word search on traditional food. Photo booth was set up for students to participate in thebest photo contest. Students then voted for their favourite photos via the AskNLearn learningportal. On the second day, students played traditional games like five stones, ‘chapteh’, pick-upsticks and ‘kuti-kuti’ with their buddies. The Art department also put up a booth for the buddies tomake some craft together.

P2 Learning Journey to HortPark 2018 6

Our Primary 2 cohort had an interesting Learning Journey to the HortPark. Experienced guides fromNParks conducted various exciting and fun activities for our students. They learnt manyScience concepts on their learning journey there, especially on plants and various types of animalslike insects. This ties in with one of the STELLAR units for English this term. In their groups, they hadto complete ten tasks. After which, they had to use the pictures collected during their learningjourney and compile the photos onto a collage on their tablets. They will be showcasing their collageduring the end of the year PCTC with their parents and teachers.

Our P4 students went to Chinatown Heritage Centre along Pagoda Street inJuly to view the structure and artefacts commonly found in early 1900sshophouses. They had the opportunity to learn about the history and livingconditions of our Chinese forefathers who had played a great part in ournation's development in the early 1900s. This experience served as areminder of the hard work and sacrifices made by the early settlers so as toenable us to have our ultra-modern, present day Singapore. Every studentwas given a multimedia guide (MMG) upon entry to CHC. The MMG is ahandheld device that offered commentaries to the galleries.
