Responding to Welfare Reform - Allerdale Summary This summary provides data and headline analysis about the potential impact of welfare reform in Allerdale:
• There are 6,546 households in Allerdale with an annual income of less than £10,000 – this number has fallen in the last year
• 8,470 people of working age (16-64 years) in Allerdale are claiming some type of benefit and 79% of those are claiming an out-of-work benefit. Most claimants are aged 45-54years.
• There are 1,496 people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Allerdale – this number has fallen in the past year
• However, youth unemployment in Allerdale is not falling at the same rate and remains above the national average
• Some parts of the district, in particular in deprived, urban areas, with high levels of unemployment
• One in five people living in Allerdale have a long-term health problem or disability, above the county and national average
• During the period October 2010 to November 2012, 1,470 claimants of employment & support allowance/incapacity benefit were re-assessed, of those 21% were deemed ‘fit for work’. Some of these claimants could require additional support when re-entering the employment market
• 6,900 families are currently claiming child or working tax credits in Allerdale, There was a fall of 2,300 following the changes to tax credit thresholds in April 2012
• Levels of child poverty are high in areas of Allerdale with a total of 3,105 children (aged 0-19 years) living in poverty.
• In Allerdale there are 7,309 people claiming housing benefit. 67% of housing benefit claimants are of working age. 1402 tenants in Allerdale have been identified as ‘under-occupying’ their home against the social sector size criteria and have experienced a reduction in Housing Benefit

Responding to Welfare Reform - Barrow Summary This summary provides data and headline analysis about the potential impact of welfare reform in Barrow:
• There are 5,443 households in Barrow with an annual income of less than £10,000 – this number has fallen in the last year
• 8,280 people of working age (16-64 years) in Barrow are claiming some type of benefit and 80% of those are claiming an out-of-work benefit. Most claimants are aged 45-54years.
• There are 1,391 people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Barrow – this number has fallen in the past year
• However, youth unemployment in Barrow is not falling at the same rate and remains above the national average
• One quarter of residents in Barrow have a long-term health problem or disability, above the county and national average
• Barrow has the highest proportion of those claiming Disability Living Allowance in the county

• There are 6,847 households in Carlisle with an annual income of less than £10,000 – this number has fallen in the last year but remains above national levels
• 9,510 people of working age (16-64 years) in Carlisle are claiming some type of benefit and 81% of those are claiming an out-of-work benefit. Most claimants are aged 45-54years.
• There are 1,436 people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Carlisle – this number has fallen in the past year
• However, youth unemployment in Carlisle is not falling at the same rate and in some areas is above the national average
